You first have to understand that this is completely arbitrary in the first place. Just because you use the same standards most of society does to judge success and failure doesn't make it objective. It's just a kind of appeal to popularity in order to hide from the ambiguity of the arbitrariness of it all. And then there are those of us who think that those who lack individuality and who pursue what the status quo values most are the ones who have really ruined their lives. In pretty much every case a wise person with a good, simple life will take pity on the one with the flashy sports car and think to himself: "Poor person! He doesn't have the courage to need little. If only he could know what real self-worth is, rather than being caught in a parade of it in socially recognized symbols!"
