Do you respect the old school poker guys?

We all know, this is very commom: the young poker generation thinks they are better than the older generation. That may be true, but how much respect do you have for the old folks? I'm talking about true respect here. If you sit at a table with chan, doyle, helmuth, negreanu and others alike what would go thru your head about their game? Do you think you are better? You think they dont know what they are doing and why? Or you have true respect and admiration for them?

I used to think a lot of them were legendary due to the TV exposure but once I started playing in the online scene and consulted with some midstakes regs I knew then I realized that live old pros are just bad.

I respect Johnny Chan for winning back to back tournaments and always displaying a happy/friendly personality at the table, Scotty Nguyen for having a hot trophy wife, and Patrick Antonius for making a soul-read call with a pair of 4's against Phil Laak's 3 barrel with AJ high on HSP.

I agree Phil Hellmuth is pretty damn good. He might make himself look like a smuck on tv but he can play the game. I respect a few of the other older guys but it mostly looks like they are some no moral fuckers now haha.

Think about how many hundreds of millions of dollars have been pissed away in sponsorship of people who are completely fucking useless at both poker and promotion. Its like Girah on crack. The old "live pro/old guard" image was the poker gold-rush for people who had entered a WSOP event before Moneymaker won.

There are too many names to fucking list.

Removing the people who scammed the entire community by being degenerate douchebags, the only people who deserve respect are those who marketed themselves to build the community.

Barry Greenstein
Negreanu
Chan

Congrats to Ivey, must be hard to portray some sick high-stakes gambler image when youre freerolling on a few million deposits
Congrats to Hellmuth, for promoting a fraudulent site and being best buds with Russ and having a good enough spin team to bail out of UB before the ship sank
Congrats to Nguyen for still having a mullet and being a drunken colluding retard
Congrats to Antonius for being part of FTP and mysteriously only having $100 in his account despite playing nosebleeds

I think the OP has the term "old school" and "most marketed poker players over 30" confused. When I think of "old school" and poker I think of players like: Johnny Moss, Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Chip" Reese, and of course Doyle Brunson. These guys and others from that era are guys who were playing under insane conditions that none of us internet nerds would ever even consider. Indeed gambling back then was not simply with the money you have on the tables but all the money you have on your person as well your general health. No pokertraker, no training sites, no poker forums, no poker books, and no way of knowing if they were winning players or not except for their own interpretation of their results / variance. I mean it's gotta be pretty hard to keep playing when you're on a 20k hand downswing (which was 2-3 months back then) and at risk of being robbed, beaten, or killed on a day to day basis.

I don't think these guys are better than their counterparts of today (it's very very rare that the old school is better in any discipline than the new school) but they definitely have my respect and it'd be an honor to play w/ any of them.

i respect them for figuring out a lot of stuff by themselves because back in the day the road from fish to good player was like 99.9999% all their own hard work and intelligence where nowadays a lot more knowledge is out there. huge respect for doyle brunson, stu unger, chip reese, ivey(OBVIOUSLY) and barry G. not many others come to mind tho.

I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance, by running away from the scene of an accident.

"Figuring out a lot of stuff" = just cheating/colluding/angle shooting the shit out of everyone and not getting a bullet in your face. Yeh congrats Doyle for not getting shot.
Ungar OD'ed in a shitty motel room with no money
Ivey freerolled your FTP bankroll
Barry was a negative millionaire at one point, he could easilly be in the Sam Grizzle / Eskimo Clark camp.

but no i would not respect them at all as a player if i played against them. maybe i have respect for how good they were before compared to other people, but at a table today, no not in that way, not as a villain in a hand. i would view them all as regfish pretty much

My respect goes for Nazgul back in the days NL5k just appear: there was a Grimmstarr guy who used to 3bet preflop raisers and insta sitout (there were no tracking sites around), until he meet naz who just openshoved at 3 tables simultaneously, instead of whining on forums.

I respect the people who do the best at poker. It sure looks like Howard and Ferguson have gotten the most money out of it. They count as old school right?

I had a saying once, when I was in the army, I did however get a "refs" because of my belief. But that was that respect isn't something you demand, it has to be earned.

But the Major of the camp I was at didn't care, he still got grumpy and fined me for not saluting him. Not even when I tried protesting, that he could at least salute to me first if that's what he wanted, I'm sure I'd return the favor with a friendlier hello back lol.

Where was I, yea, the oldschool players who deserves it, made new strategies and stuff I respect, but I thought that was a given.

I'm sick of the way people rant about how respect has to be earned. I agree with the raw nature of the statement, you don't get respect for doing nothing, but that does not mean that respect has to be earned from every new fuck who comes along. If you're in a company of any sort it is up to you to figure out what people are worth and what they've done. If someone is higher up than you it is for a reason and until you know what that reason is you have to assume they earned it. Acting otherwise just makes you a douchebag. Yeah there are people who moved up who didn't deserve it and you should give 0 respect too, but until you know that you shouldn't go around parading that everyone above you that you don't know is a fucktard and needs to prove there merit to you. What the fuck have you done that gives you the right to judge someone above you?

ye, prolly a bit of a noob, if you walk along the street, some guy walk towards you, you do a little nod, like "heyh", and that should be plenty (maybe a small friendly smile), doesn't matter if he's won a nobel prize, you don't halt, and do a hitlery salute lol.

My 2 cents

Same if you walk, and a small teenager walks by, and he greets you with a casual lol sap, you do a hey and a smile back, you don't kick the fucker in the nuts, then spit on him whilst he's lying on the ground, since he hasn't achived anything, and I've just gotten a PhD. Since you didn't approve of the way he saluted you lol.

most of the "old school" eventually turned out to be pieces of shit.

TalentedTom    Canada. Apr 28 2012 11:15. Posts 20070

On an unrelated note this thread made me realize Doyle Brunson is the original Cardrunners. I definatley respect the oldschool players, they were the best of their time and were able to come up with all these strategies/ideas without the internet. I can't immagine what I'd be doing if the internet did not exist.

Some are worth respect even though they aren't really that great by today's standards. Some are good but today's standards but deserve zero respect. Some are both good and respectable. Rest aren't good or worthy of respect.
