In the past year or so I've been trying to make a more than usual effort to improve myself as a human being. I want to learn things than can lead myself towards a happier life, better understand of the people around me and to improve my self-awareness. I just came across this video and tought it would be a good idea to share it. Enjoy!

I think that there are some clear character qualities that everyone can acquire or improve on that can help a lot to become a happier and better life. For example: try to be more understanding about what other people do/think.
The best way to feel better about yourself is to put others down. As their self esteem diminishes you absorb their powers eventually becoming immortal.

There is no other route to self improvement than introspection, spend time alone, read philosophy maybe you should start with greek philosophy, question yourself, and as you start to gain knowledge and enlightenment it will be evident where you should go.

Loco has read a lot more than i have but he will probably recommend you books that are not friendly with people who start with philosophy (even if he says they are )
I would strongly recommend reading greek philosophy, you can go socrates or if you want something that applies directly even to poker you should read about stoicism, may i suggest mediations from Marcus Aurelius, or something from Seneca the young.

Why not start a new thread? There are worse threads than that. But to answer you, I don't know. There's no one best place to start in philosophy, it's more of a history that requires quite a bit of study. I started casually with the existentialists because that's where I was at in my life, and I think it's a good place to start and there is a hell of a lot in there. Books of aphorisms are always great to start with, too, since it's not something that requires a lot of time. My favorites are the ones from the Greek Stoics, Nietzsche, Cioran and Schopenhauer. For books on existentialism, Camus, Sartre, Hermann Hesse and Dostoyevsky are pretty safe bets. They all have really engaging novels. I think Colin Wilson's early works of the "Outsider series" might be the best introduction to philosophy for the layman. I learned a ton from 'The Outsider' which is still one of my favorite books ever, and his book 'Beyond the Outsider' gives a pretty brief history of philosophy that also goes into phenomenology and it opens a lot of doors for study.

I know this girl is not a super smart person from whom anyone should be taking life advices, most of her videos are just humor videos, not vlogs about "serious" things. In this video I related with her in some important aspects of my life, thats why I decided to share it here. Thinking a little deeper now, it sure wasnt a good idea. Very very few people will find something useful out of what she is saying and what I'm gonna get mostly here is trolling and people wanting to put me down.
I'm dont think of myself as a shallow person. The fact that I'm a model makes people instantly think I'm dumb, but I'm gonna stick for me a bit here. I've been a model only for the last 3 years, it was never a dream or something I was planning on, it just happened: a guy walked to me in the mall and convinced me to go to his agency and sign with them, I did and booom. I have a bachelors in computer science from the University of Brasilia, one of the best and hardest to get in here in Brazil. I worked for the Brazilian government in a federal court for 3 years before moving to Bangkok, in order to be hired to work there I had to face several tests and tough competition since the government has the best salaries in the market. No, I'm not dumb, but I do have my issues.
I wouldnt have made this blog entry if I had taken 1 more hour after watching that video, I did it in the heat of what I was feeling at the moment. Thats is probably something I should work on: think a bit longer on very emotional moments.
Loco I usually dont read your post because they are too long about things I am not interested to read about, its nothing personal against you and I'm very sure you are a smart guy. Baal, I liked that video, thanks.

Baals happy video was posted in addition to what Loco said to further dumb down your original video. Yes, you may relate to said girl in video - that is fine. For most, there are better sources available to educate oneself. By defending your posts from the emotional whirlpool that is tutz you are basically dropping down your pants and inviting e-rape. Nobody is out to get you, people (Baal, Loco) are genuinely trying to help i have no doubt about that.
When posting anything in my blog I'm always aware there is gonna be people coming here just to try to make fun, troll or put me down, I dont mind that anymore. I just ignore that and try to focus on the few good posts.

i watched 5 minutes of the video you posted and its absolutely retarded, its shallow and the girl obviously also has the intelligence of a bottle of mustard, the video looks aimed at teenagers with angst, identity and parent problems ffs.

imo there's no point for someone to start messing with philosophy just to appear less shallow or uneducated. Only monsters can come out of that approach. There has to be some sort of drive, some inner questions formed that make you wanna honestly understand better the nature of things around you and that alone is probably not enough. For most people this happens when they have some sort of unfortunate event, eg the death of someone close. Getting older often has the same effect. I remember reading book chapters that seemed nonsensical, then rereading them 2 years later and thinking "holy shit how did I miss this". Being smart or not seems somewhat irrelevant, sometimes life grabs you by the balls and leaves no room for thinking about what is going on.Many people in their 60s desperately try to find stuff to do to keep their minds occupied because that's what they have been doing all their lives and now (that they are retired) they have time to feel their death's approach and it's very inconvenient (Jesus comes in handy there )

And yeah, I think lebowski is right. The drive to read philosophy has to come out of a feeling of necessity. In my case, I read out of desperation for the most part. I'm sure many people nowadays start with self-help books, and eventually realize they aren't very helpful, it's just what they were exposed to, and eventually turn to the real stuff and start looking into philosophy when they are ready. There's a progression to be made and it takes time. When you have suffered a lot in life and you have a Wissensdurst (thirst for knowledge) you just happen to grow a lot faster than other people. Intellectual gifts really don't play all that much into any of it.

I've said it lots of times before, but I've listened to all the clips on Youtube that I could find of Alan Watts, he's all philosophical n shit.
He talks about a person's identity, reality's true nature, higher conscioussness and the hunt for happiness. Also translates a lot of the Asian philosophy or something along those lines.
Nobody is giving him shit, he wanting to improve is the only way to start, but its just the same as just saying, i want to save the world, the problem is doing it, anyway ill PM you my contact tutz

you certainly shouldn't feel ashamed that you posted this, you know her, she spoke the way you like about problems that you're interested in. If you randomly grab some classical philosophy book it would be so abstract and distant and about things that may not matter to you (epistemology, metaphysics, logic). As this really touched you, it's obviously a good starting point. She has actually some good insights.
