Mike “The Mouth” Matusow beat Phil Hellmuth in the final match of the 2013 NBC Heads-up Championship tournament to take down the prestigious tournament and stop Hellmuth from becoming a two-time winner of this tournament. Mike Matusow pocketed $750,000 for his victory.

With eight players remaining on Saturday, Matusow came out victorious against John Hennigan in the finals of the Spades bracket, and Daniel Cates managed to win against Scott Seiver in the Clubs bracket finals to advance to top 4. These two were set to battle for the finals, and first Matusow's A-J managed to beat Seiver’s pocket nines to grab an early lead, which was extended later when Matusow made a full house with his Q-8. The final hand came just few moments later: Seiver went all-in pre-flop with J-T and was called by Matusow holding A-T. The board didn't bring any help and we knew our first finalist.

In the two remaining matches Eugene Katchalov went against Phil Hellmuth in the Hearts bracket while Brian Hastings faced off against Joe Serock in the Diamonds bracket. Hellmuth and Serock advanced and battled in the next game: Hellmuth took the lead with two pairs, and after getting crippled Serock moved all-in pre-flop with suited Q-J and Hellmuth called with A-J. Ace falls on the turn and Hellmuth moves to the final as rest of the board bricks out.

The finals were played as a best-of-three and Matusow took a massive lead in the first match after hitting quads and getting paid off. The first match ended soon after.
In the second set the chip lead went back and forth between both players and it ended with a preflop all-in pocket deuces versus pocket tens, with Matusow being dominated. The better hand held and we had a 1-1 tie.
The third match started rapidly: Matusow took an instant lead and never gave it away, destroying Hellmuth during the whole match. In the final hand Matusow raised preflop and Hellmuth made the call. The flop brought Kd-Js-2d and Hellmuth check-called. 6s falls on the turn and Hellmuth check-raised after Matusow's bet. He got called, and even though he was in a good position with his KsTh against 8d4d, a Qd completed flush for Matusow on the river giving him the 2013 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship title.

Final results of the 2013 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship:

    1. Mike Matusow – $750,000
    2. Phil Hellmuth – $300,000

Good for him. I'm sure he'll invest it in a low risk mutual fund and won't go broke ever again.

Ah well, at least it's better than Jamie Gold. I like Mike solely for entertainment purposes.

He gets such a bad rap.
He is a brilliant thinking player but his reputation overshadows this fact.
Good for him to book a win.

Wait, is he really still in debt? I thought he sorted all that stuff out years ago.

Wow, Matusow beating Hellmuth was unexpected. And it wasn't even down to sheer luck, I mean he did have some tough matches before getting there and it was played in a best of 3 format. Any chances of seeing this before the official airing?
