How do i get out of this emotional loophole im into while im playing poker? Im not sure if i run like shit or just play bad anymore. Every time i stick my money in even as a major favorite im absolutely sure i ll lose maybe thats why im running ~40 bi below ev last 70k hands. Tried having a nice long break from poker but that didnt seem to solve my problem. Ideas ? How do you deal with the insecure periods during your huge downswings ? Share

Hey man. I've had a couple of those downswings. the most recent one last 2 weeks of may i was running 40bi below EV too. feels stupid to start grinding every day with a positive attitude only to find yourself screwed even worse then before. it seems that the more negative you get the more you get fucked.
Then all of a sudden, since the start of June I'm running 20bi above EV and have already booked 50BI for the month. just hang in there and eventually cards will start falling your way again. Good Luck

set goals that aren't related to money

damn, having the exactly same problem right now

seems like if I start a session now I know that I'll run like shit because I've been running bad the whole month, and I think I actually run worst when I think that way, weird
I even tried to play several different sites to see if was a ''doomswitch'' but kept running like shit
looks like my mind have power over the cards, lol
really really weird

but I think all you can do is try to focus on playing just your A+ game, dont grind zillions of tables or hours
play just when feeling good to play, otherwise quit
do that for a few days till you get your confidence back

Dont listen to anything I sayLast edit: 10/06/2011 22:05

This.

You need to be much more realistic in your expectations. Luck is a significant factor in your poker career whether you like it or not. If you set goals related to money and form emotional attachments with them you're immediately setting yourself up for turmoil. You should focus your goals on the one thing you can actually control which is how much you play.

"Practice Poker for two hours a day"

Sometimes I hear people suggest things like "improve at poker" but the truth is there is almost no way to measure that which doesn't end up going back to win-rates and what limit you play at. Things you don't entirely control. It's best to focus your poker goals on something where the only thing that can stop you from achieving it is your own laziness.

Taking a week break usually works for me, it helps me get out of that negative mindset when playing bad / running bad. I usually try to focus on "pwning" my opponents, out thinking.. out playing them like I would in a video game. Playing with that mindset seems to help me alot.

Also I wouldn't blame my bad results on variance, EV is bs imo, you should think that too. It helps me when I think that way, most of the time when im running under EV it's mainly because of bad play. You can't blame your bad results on running bad.. even when running bad you should review your play imo.

I dont know what a dt drop is. Is it a wrestling move? -OlyLast edit: 11/06/2011 20:59
