It's time for me to buy a new car except I'm clueless about cars. I don't want a sports car I know most of you would shill me a BMW M5 or something like that. I mean I do, I just can't spend a 100k$

Currently split between buying a brand new one e.g. something like the new Octavia seems quite a reasonable price/quality-wise. Or going for a second-hand higher tier like a BMW from 2015.

The issue with secondhand cars is you don't know what you're getting, the sellers are scammers that rollback their kilometers and hide any red flags quite well combined with the fact that I'm clueless about cars I'm basically a fish sitting on a table with all nosebleed regs. The other disadvantage to secondhand cars is that you won't be taking advantage of all the support and maintenance that comes with a new car and if you're unlucky you could end up spending shittons in repairs.

I'm pretty much set on buying a new one cause it makes more sense from a financial standpoint - I won't have to pay in cash and could get a lease with < 0,5% interest leaving more cash on the side for me. The Octavia sounds like the best idea, but also looking into VWs e.g. Golf/T-Roc ... or Passat/Arteon (the issue is that will stretch my budget a lot and I won't be able to get many extras otherwise this is an obvious instant call the Arteon looks cool as fuck)

Anyway I know most of you are spending a decent amount of time around cars as a hobby so any information that would help me make a decision is appreciated.

P.S. I also just noticed that my previous blogpost was that I quit smoking ... kind of cool I didn't know almost 2 years have passed

nothing wrong with buying second hand cars if you are buying few years olds (1-4 years) they are still perfect (they wont roll back the km in those, and you should be able to check their service history) except much cheaper then a brand new car which drops its value 15% once you roll out the shop.

Depends how much you got saved but 2nd hand car is probably more worth it value-wise. New cars depreciate 30% in a year.
If I was spending over half my savings, I'd opt for used.

Buying used cars, you can buy a carfax to verify odometer readings, number of owners, if there's any accidents. You can look on offerup, craigslist, cars.com. As for the type of car I think there's a spectrum between "Save gas + don't care how it looks." vs. "Looks cool, high performance, but less efficient." (Except for Teslas). Find what you're after right now and do some research on what kind of car you want.

You may also want to bring it to a mechanic for an inspection for any failing parts before buying.
Carfaxes can be bought on ebay for like 5 bucks.

You mention odometer rollbacks are common there as if 99% of cars are sold under the premise of this scam. What % of cars in your country do you think have rolled back odometers? Is it something like 80%? 50%? 25%? Or realistically is it something like <5%? I feel like there is a significant amount of self-denial going on when you talk about this. Obviously buying a used car has some probabilistic element to it but doesn't change the fact that getting in AA>KK is +EV. You can always reduce variance if you are uncomfortable by paying some vig ex. hiring a professional to do a pre-purchase inspection or buying certified pre-owned from a reputable dealership (at least in the US).

Also a general rule you should be striving to have the value of your car be less than or equal to 5% of your networth. This isn't a ironclad rule. For example a 21 year old American with a 50k job and a networth with 8k that needs a car for work does not need to follow this rule, but certainly he should not buy a 25k new car. Cars are more expensive in your country and incomes are a bit lower but 5% is still a good target to aim for. This is despite me making some stupid thread about wanting to get a GTR (actually changed back to a RCF now). Ambition is a good thing, and I disagree with people that don't think of anything but driving a shitty 20 year old corolla or whatever but that is still better than being a life/financial fish.

Lastly I don't understand if you cannot make basic judgements about buying a car why you think you are qualified to opine about politics when basically its the same analytical skillset required except much more complex. Basically every financial expert out there says its always better to buy a used car but somehow you think you know better. It should not be of a surprise that the leftist is clueless about cars/basic personal finance lol.

Realistically they are rolling back probably 90%++ and since most of the market is cars from Western Europe, the service book is always "lost" and due to all of them being imported they are more expensive as well. Going to a mechanic for a review is obviously something I'd do but that doesn't guarantee much cause issues are generally well hidden.

Financially it makes total sense to get the 2nd hand as the depreciation rate of new cars is fucking insane. I actually wonder if there is a carfax-like service in Europe, that would be awesome

@hiems what the fuck are you talking about again lmao - I'm obviously just looking at opinions of people that have driven both secondhand cars and bought new ones and want to know if the safety, security and comfort of a new one is worth the money. If you're simply making decisions based on costs then we just have different views. Thanks for pointing out obvious shit though, nobody thought of that. Could you see yourself out? Thanks

@Santa that post makes no sense whatsoever

There are a shit ton of car sellers which only deal with cars younger than 5years, got a good history and will never roll back cars. They simply can't afford shady reputation. We are not in the 90's anymore, online reviews everywhere. At least in hungary, but bulgaria should be quite similar imho.

Also make sure you go with a car specialist to check the car. They cost around 50$ and inspect pretty much everything on the spot.

i don't know about the rest but the US market it's a prime time to buy new because the used market has gone up so much, it is now less wrong to buy used than it has been for a long time. the difference in price has gotten smaller so it's less -EV

oh

BMW service will cost you an arm and a leg it means

I pretty much think the same thing e.g. a new Octavia would cost me 20k euros with pretty much all the shit that I need (and I actually checked the german market and... they sell the same car for 20% more money the fuck) and there would practically be almost no maintenance cost for the next 5 years, while a BMW from 2010 would cost me 10k euros, maintenance is higher and if something breaks the prices for repairs start from like 600euros per whatever.

Obviously the pros/cons is

Pros - you drive a BMW german engineering awesomeness
Cons - you might end up spending close to the same amount of money on a 10yo car in the next 5 years as you would on a brand new one

dnagardi   Hungary. Oct 05 2020 21:07. Posts 1776

well skoda is owned by VW, so practicly you get a german engineering awesomeness either way

Fwiw I got a 2015 skoda octavia 1.4 TSI, lovely car

Whats the market like for Japanese cars in Bulgaria / Hungary. Do you guys have Lexus/Acura or is it just labeled as Toyota/Honda? Also what is the upcharge in terms of import taxes compared to Germany since I presume you guys are in the EU. Also how common are they (include nissan, mazda)

Luxury Japanese cars are not on the market e.g. Infiniti/Lexus. Infiniti used to be but they left. Taxes or import costs, in general, should be the same by European law across every EU nation across any products, but perhaps I'm wrong

Well presumably they are imported from Japan not another European country so tax amount might be different was what I was thinking.

There are no import taxes between EU states, and the taxes for import into the EU are all the same. That's one of the massive pillars thats keeping the EU together and giving them an incentive to be a union. But I can see how you wouldn't know it since it does seem weird

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing but I'm fairly certain the mix up is because of some English mistake on your part lol...maybe I worded what I meant in a confusing way.

A pack of premiums in Toronto is about 15$, i was at 1 a day, thank god i stopped!

PS. I stopped cold turkey, I got my teeth cleaned and I paid for a 400$ whitening , the only way i could muster up that was to also stop afterwards, and boom it worked, sooo happy!
