Lloyd Irvin, a famous scumbag (those stories are for another day) grappling instructor put on an invitation brown belt no time limit submission only tournament he has dubbed the BJJ kumite. His student, Keenan Cornelius, is the next big name in BJJ. He won all of the biggest tournaments (worlds, world no gi, pan ams, european championships, brazilian national championships) at middleweight and absolute as a purple belt last year and was recently promoted to brown. Lloyd wanted to prove that Keenan was the best brown belt in the world, so he invited some of the other best guys in the world to compete against him.

Check out the 3 episodes:

Really enjoyed watching these. Lit a fire under my ass to start training a bit harder.

the matches are all condensed down so we dont have to watch entire brutal 40 minute sessions.

but here is one match that was released in entirety, really awesome one:

Yea I've been watch. Keenan is such a fucking monster. Crazy to he hear he rolls 4-6 hours a day, that's nuts. I don't think that's 40% flow rolls either. Having someone who pays for your living/food/training so you can focus just on training is a huge plus. Also living in a house with a bunch of other guys who train.

AJ Agazarm is such a scrappy mother fucker, love his style. Just wild and has no quit in him. Watching him escape like 20 armbars per match is awesome.

What are you thoughts on Sean Roberts? Skill wise and personality wise.

sean roberts seems like a fucking tool. really dislike the shit he pulled against souza who seems like a really good kid and had a legit injury. i loved watching victor silverio just lose his fucking shit at him. but hes very good in the gi. i think he would have lost to a fresh luke in the gi, mainly due to size, but he was clearly better than most in the gi, even if almost all of his wins came from that lame calf slicer

i think gary tonon, aj agazarm and aj souza all came off really really well. sick athletes, really good grapplers and really nice guys.

aj is a total fucking bulldog. he actually beat keenan a couple years ago at purple belt, keenan's last loss

kind of a derail, but have you heard anything about the miyao brothers? they are twins, 20 years old, weigh about 140 and both put up a sick fight vs keenan in 50/50 matches that turned out exciting in the brown belt absolute division at the european championships.

check out this, such a fucking sick ending vs joao in the finals:

faced his brother paolo earlier in the tourney and nearly lost that too:

these guys will def do some damage in the smaller divisions

sandbagging is a big problem in competition. it was pretty clear while keenan was a purple belt he was probably also the best brown belt in the world and could have easily been a black belt. but its pretty commonplace to hold people back for the purpose of letting them compete at worlds and try to medal before moving them up.

Yea Miyo bros seems to be pretty sick. They did really good considering their size. That pass by Keenan at the end of the first one is pretty sick.

Also the thing with Keenan not being promoted to black yet, ibjjf requires you to be at a belt for a certain amount of time before being promoted. For example you have to be a brown belt for 1 year before ibjjf will allow you to be promoted and compete at black belt.

So if Keenan was promoted right now to black he would not be allowed to compete in any ibjjf tournaments, which are probably the most prestigious ones right now along with ADCC.

Also keep in mind these are no time limit submission matches, which Lloyd says he always trains his guys for. Also Lloyd and Keenan were the only two who really knew the structure of the tournament.

So these guys mostly train for 10 minute matches based on points & subs, and thought this was going to be an elimination tournament. Meanwhile Keenan often trains for no time limit subs and knew it would be a round robin structure.

Keenan is still almost certainly the best, but it doesn't mean one of these guys couldn't beat him on points or something in the worlds/panams/whatever.

yea luke would probably have a slight edge on him in an 8 minute no gi match. im surprised how well he handled the long matches given his size, but he is definitely at his best early and i think keenan is much better in a gi than no gi.

regarding keenan's belt, he needs to be brown til at least next year, but he could easily have been promoted to brown after his first or second major tournament win. instead he just kept getting entered in purple events when he was clearly capable of competing with black belts. guy rolled equally with roberto cyborg (http://www.bjjheroes.com/bjj-fighters/roberto-cyborg-abreu-bjj-fighter-wiki), leonardo noguiera (http://www.bjjheroes.com/bjj-fighters/leonardo-nogueira) and lost on points 4-2 to xande ribiero, one of the top 5 guys ever. this guy was a purple 2 months ago and is already top 10 in the world at his weight

the full match video between gary tonon and aj agazaram at least showed some down periods where both slowed a bit whereas the shortened match highlights made it seem like they were full speed for 40+ minute periods. That doesnt take anything away from their cardio. Crazy how long they can go at a high intensity. Not just within individual matches but more for the long haul. they were having on average 4 matches a day of around 20 minutes for 4 straight days. not sure how they did it

Actually really inspired me as well. Will be joining a BJJ beginners class sometime soon. Would eventually like the idea of living with some BJJ/poker players one day.

One thing I am kind of repelled by cauliflower ear thing thought which is primary caused by wrestling/BJJ.. is it avoidable by any means?

not everyone gets cauliflower ear and all u have to do is basically drain the blood out if your ear ever gets inflamed.

^yeap
I mean I know bunch of guys that are purple + belt and are training for a long time and that never had any problems w/ ears and also you could be more careful if you start getting problems
also there is some kind of a protection for ears but at least in my club only one guy out of like 100 ppl used it so it was kind of a gay not sure why... but yea if I had those problems I would wear that shit

the top of my left ear is a hardened bump but its barely even noticeable. someone would have to look pretty closely to see it and they still might think its nothing out of the ordinary. it takes a lot for your ear to start looking like a pigs tail. if you want a prophylactic solution you can always wear ear guards like wrestlers do, but draining the ear when it starts getting filled up works too

but most BJJ guys kinda look at it as a badge of honor. i wouldnt mind a mini cauliflower ear. nothing like hendo or randy couture's, but just enough so i look formidable lol
