Hi!

I have been traveling on a terrible road trip Miami->Texas and so when I check in at the end of the night I have nothing to do but read the internet until I fall asleep. Lately, most of this involves reading reddit/gawker and just looking for anything that is interesting.

Lately, all I've been reading about has been the Fermi Paradox and 'Men's Rights'. My sister actually somewhat put me onto the Men's Rights stuff when I talked to her while driving as she was talking to me about how some of her friends at Uni have been 'brainwashed' by the Women's Studies program. This actually tied in a little bit to my last blog post as well so I did some more prodding around on the topic.

Apparently the most recent high-profile incident was a protest at U of T (Toronto) for some guy I'd never heard of before Warren Farrell who was doing some kind of conference there. An admittedly pro-Farrell video clip of some of the protests here:

Anyways, I find this whole thing mildly interesting. It is interesting to look at the real differences between men/women in the western world in regards to education, medical spending, longevity, etc. etc. I'm really on the fence and without an opinion but I must say I am surprised at the amount of academics who seem to be popping up to champion the 'cause' of men and boys possibly getting the short end of the stick in today's society.

The Christina Hoff Summers woman has some interesting writings/youtube stuff as well.

Anyways, what do you guys think? I know this stuff is kind of dull, but don't worry my next blog post will be advanced and talking about the Fermi Paradox, the Great Filter, and the upcoming Technological singularity.

Also, I have another 10 hour drive coming up, and am running out of podcasts. I got the Joe Rogan ones etc but if anyone has a recco on any good/controversial science/sociology/current events podcasts please let me know!

Sucks to be a beta male in the USA nowadays.

Get married to a woman who has to settle down after no more alphas are interested in pumping and dumping her and then I believe a woman can cheat, file for divorce and still take half the guy's shit along with the children (if she simply accuses the guy of domestic abuse).

Not particularly great for alphas as well because of the ease of false rape accusations. Rape is now defined so loosely you almost have to sign a contract before you get to the act.

And ironically feminism isn't that great for women either. Nowadays they are expected to be able to juggle being a career girl and children and also possibly when being a single parent. But still they aren't really ever single because the sugar daddy government becomes their husbands. They are free to fuck around and the tax payers will pick up the tab.

This shit drives me nuts. So many people are just waiting to discount any of my success just because I'm a white male. It's more feminism than it is equality.

I'd rather keep this topic about Male/Female period rather than further breaking it down into skin color.

I'm also not saying that 'white male' is life hard mode, I'm saying that there are pretty convincing arguments that perhaps there needs to be more attention being paid to men in general.

The rate of fatherless homes is only increasing, and with it so is the prison population, homelessness, and other things.

Maybe they are related, maybe they aren't, but I think it deserves more study for sure.

Dan Carlins Hardcore History is fucking incredible, even if you aren't a big fan of history. I wasn't, but I still love the shit out of his podcasts.

He also has a political podcast called Common Sense which is also pretty good.

prisons are a business, it's like modern day slavery. You can put lots of people in prison and and get lots of cheap labor out of it. Anyway, that's what's happening in america.

noam chomsky has said quite a bit on prisons in america.

hardly uninteresting, and i agree completely.
will def watch those videos soon.

as for podcasts, it's really hard to find some solid, consistent podcasts. I hate joe rogan's podcast but I think adam corrola's is entertaining.

i know you don't torrent, but if you have a chance, download "Outliers" or "Freakonomics" audio books and buy them later if you haven't read them. Definitely road trip worthy material as it keeps u engaged and forces you to think.

There are serious issues related to being male yes but it seems like men's rights people are generally more interested in denying the issues that women face and hating feminism.

I read about that thing at UofT that you described in the varsity (UofT student paper) and found myself sympathetic with this guy on a few points - male mortality rates and boys' education are both disadvantages to being a man. But then he loses the plot imo and starts talking about how date rape isn't a thing and how women can just go "o i got raped" if they feel like being cruel, which is obvious misogynist bullshit and completely misses the point that rape and in particular date rape is a very serious threat facing women much moreso than men.

All kids live full-time with the father by their own choice. The father still has to pay full child support to mother. The mother retires early on the extra money.

Men's rights, lol.

Don't think anyone would disagree that that's pretty shitty but also doubt that's an accurate description of what's going on

I was hoping someone from the Toronto/Canada area could comment. Most of the info I come across via google seems mega biased in one direction or the other so I was curious as to what the consensus in Canada seemed to be.

Unfortunately, perhaps an effect of US media, but I am inclined to disagree with regards to 'o i got raped' not being a real issue. Lately a huge news story has been the Brian Banks case and how literally a dumbass teenage girl 'oh yeah? well im gonna tell police u raped me' potentially prevented a guy from becoming a millionaire football player

http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/24/sports/la-sp-brian-banks-20120524

Duke Lacrosse case etc. etc.

There actually is a surprisingly large volume of cases where men are falsely accused of rape in the US and there lives are more or less ruined because of it. Whether this is media exaggeration or not is up to debate but it seems to be enough of an issue to warrant discussion. (imo of course).

just felt like mentioning to this day im surprised the duke lacrosse case didnt get more attention once it was proven their accuser was an ultimate nut job who later murdered her boyfriend.

those 3 guys and realistically the entire lacrosse team had their lives effectively ruined cause of some asshole, and it seems like it was all collectively swept under the rug

That's a really sad story

It's a terrible thing that men are falsely accused of rape, and I don't doubt there are many examples of it, but I don't think it's a serious concern for the vast majority of men. Futhermore, I think a lot of the talk that goes on when discussing false accusations of rape is that it ignores real rapes that happen, and happen with much greater frequency. Some study I saw on wikipedia puts the rate of false accusations at 3%. Obviously 3% too many but on the other hand it's 97% too many rapes. This study suggests that for every man falsely accused of rape there are 32 women who have been raped and have reporeted it (there is a huge number of rapes that go unreported). Also there's a lot of literature about the difficulties and obstacles (institutional and social) that many women face when trying to report a rape and bring the rapist to justice (and there is a lack of confidence in the justice system for bringing rapists to justice, and also a great fear of the social repercussions for letting it be public information that the rape happened, both of which lead to the huge number of unreported rapes).

I think it's also a very scary idea for most men to be accused falsely of a rape. But for most men it will never happen. In that way I think that a lot of men's rights activists are actively scare mongering with regards to this both by over stating the possibility of being falsely accused of rape and then also fostering a mistrust of women in general.

-e- also you mention that in these cases of false accusations of rape the men often have their lives ruined, but keep in mind that in cases of rape the women often have their lives ruined.
