I'm back by lazymej, August 26

Well I haven't really played for the past 1 and a half months cos I went on vacation. Awesome vacation. Anyways.. I've played a few sessions in the last few days. Been doing decently at NL10, but when I play NL25 I'm losing. Been trying to get my game up to scratch (not playing for 6+ weeks really made me super newb again). Today I played really well.. Made 6.5BI in about 1k hands. But after that I started playing like shit and was spewing really bad.. Started making dumb calls and trying stupid bluffs ofc. So I ended up at +2BI. Sigh. At least I know I still have what it takes to win when I'm playing solid postflop.

I'm also quite proud of my stats. Usually I'm playing less than 20 VP and PFR, but today I was well in the 20s. Anyways I'm just going to post a graph because I just started using HEM and am still figuring out how to set the filters.

sexy...then gross:

NL10 [Day 5] by Roto, August 26

Today I started out playing poorly, overnight I must have forgot there was a fold button. As soon as I started playing better, and taking a few beats, I started profiting.

I have to play a bunch for the rest of this month in order to keep my SilverStar status, I played NL2 and NL5 at the beginning of this month so it's gonna be close.

NL10 6max
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/8076/day5og2.jpg

My last blog post was Day 4, and there is no Day 1-3 , but I'll begin posting them in this format.

I'm going to try to post this every night that I am around, especially when I lose so I can critique myself.

Looking for a coach by TenBagger, August 26

I'm looking for a coach to help me improve my game.

I've been playing NL100 for like forever now. Lifetime, I'm running at a little under 6bb/100 or 3ptbb/100 which is pretty pathetic considering how long I've been playing at this limit. It's been good enough for me to cash out 2k+ a month consistently but I realize that I could be making so much more if I plug some leaks and work on my game.

I'm looking for a long term deal where the coach gets a sizable percentage of my winnings above my current winrate over a specified period of hands. I'm open to paying a small upfront fee but I prefer a system where the coach has a huge incentive to see me improve. I play about 50K+ hands a month. I'll be committed to putting in the effort to improve, meaning that I'll stop watching starcraft vods while I 8 table, etc. and I think that I have enough natural intelligence to greatly increase my winrate if I just get out of the mode of playing the same way that I've been playing.

If the coach can help me get to 6ptbb/100 @ 200NL which I think is a very reasonable and attainable goal, then with the way I envision the profit sharing formula to work, they will be receiving thousands of dollars a month from me. I think there are a bunch of forum regs who can vouch for my integrity to pay up to such a deal. In fact, I want to see my coach earn tens of thousands of dollars from me because that also means that I'm making that much more. And I believe that such an incentive system will attract the most capable coaches and also to motivate the coach to help me improve to the best of their ability, which is ultimately what I'm looking for.

I can also barter advice on financial planning and opening/running a restaurant if anyone potential coaches are interested. As for my credentials in offering advice on those topics, I had experience as a broker, banker and financial planner, licensed series 7, 65 and CFP. I currently own and run a 50 seat restaurant that grosses 1.5 million annually.

So if anyone is interested or knows someone that may be interested, please either respond here or shoot me a PM. Thanks!

Ehhh crappy day by Oddeye, August 26

God -6k today, horrible downswing, actually down with my aces from getting sucked out so much. Worst part of is it almost made me broke on iPoker, which fucking tilts me. I totally hate redepositing and god damn if I get sucked out like that again there is no way I'm going to win. I know it's "standard" variance to lose 16bis, I was actually pretty focused when I was playing, but I lost a few pots I could have folded, like folding AQ vs a nits on CO v Deal, and AK vs another nit UTG. I pretty much want to die right now. I think I have to play the two next weeks non-stop, I really don't want to drop limits to me this is just an horrible idea which will make me tilt.

I've already had at least 4-5 of those downswing, it tilt me even more that they still tilt me. I've felt my play had been improving for a while, I felt I was taking better decision but maybe I came to a wall or I'm robotic/tilted when I play, I still felt I was tangling and bluffing at a decent frequency and frankly it doesn't look like my bluff costed me much, it seems I lost mostly by folding so many hands on bad flop or simply at showdown. I'm gonna have to think this all over and try to look up at hands with some other people.
o well gl guys.

Questions & Hands by SCC-Faust, August 26

I've got a few questions just for some guidance and help.

1. How many tables do you play at once? I play "play money" tables until I turn 18 which is pretty soon, but I can't believe you can give a good game and focus to more than one table. I tried two and didn't do too bad. I won more than lost, but it is not real money so I'm sure the players are not as experienced. I saw what was going on in both, but I couldn't put together who raised and why and what could they have all in a few seconds and then get switched to another table.

2. Can you analyze a few hands for me (despite being play money, maybe you can just give advice solely based on my actions and not my opponents?) to see where I am going wrong and how good/bad I am doing at the moment for playing for like a week? Just give me advice in what I did wrong, what could have been done differently, anything will be appreciated:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/512350 (I didn't know a full house > a straight LOL)
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/512363 (Really disappointed in this hand)

Any extra advice, any information, anything will be appreciated.

OMFG sick session. by capaneo, August 26

So summer is basically over and Im trying to make it possible to wake up before 7am so I can goto school.

I woke up today at 7am and since my girlfriend has to work till 3am there was nothing I could do.

Logically I played 24 tables for the whole time! It wasn't a str8 session though. I took break. Had some stuff to eat and bla bla but still it was a hell of a marathon session.

I think I realized that no matter how unlucky I get the main reason of me loosing on some days is me tilting. 200nl is sooooooo soft is beyond my belife! Many many regulars there have HUGE leaks in their games is beyond me how they can survive.
Anyhow today went really well.

Im tryin to clear a 4k bonus I got before school starts cause god knows when will I be able to play hands after school starts

BTW I stoped the session cause I thought Im about to become one with the chair!

August Update! by Fayth, August 26

Sup kids! I don't think I had given any feedback from Vegas, I didn't even get to meet a single LPer.... so wasn't worth mentionning much.... still had a great time, the world hip hop dance competition was great, the philippines are total sickos..
apart from that, the weather was ridiculously hot, I was staying at the Circus Circus and it kinda sucked.... at some point I was tired of it and decided to book 3 nights at another hotel (Loews Lake Resort) which was 30 minutes away from the strip.

Those 3 nights were amazing, this hotel was far more relaxing than the circus shithole.... anyway I still had fun! :D
I'm booking again at the Caesar's Palace from october 15th to october 31st, gonna play the tournaments there and just hang out with poker mates, this time my main goal for this trip is poker, shud be amazing, and the weather shud be far more comfortable

So!! Poker wise... I came back here in quebec on august 6th, and since I came back I'm up about 72k, I don't have any graph or anything cuz well I don't use PT nemore, but I just recently fixed my stuff up so it would record hands properly and stop bugging so I'm going to record my hands in September....

I took some shots at 25/50 and 50/100 that went kind of well overall, i'm probably up about 4 buy ins on 25/50 and like.. half a buy in on 50/100 (Played very few on 50/100). It's going very well on 10/20 and 5/10 obviously.... I'm also trying to play tournaments on sundays so I get some experience in them... unfortunaly I'm often busy on sundays, visiting my gf's parents for dinner, and then my parents... meh! I'll eventually find some time to play em

Starcraft now! I'm going to this LAN in montreal next week end that is basically replacing WCG Canada since they're not sending anyone to the WCG... Lots of people going, I'm going to add 400$ to the prize pool so it makes things a bit more interesting, shud be great, lots of people planning on showing up, gonna be Teh Nostalgia xD!

Oh and, still have no news from the 40k from prima, not expecting anything at all anymore, but hey, it's not like 40k matters right ?

Thanks for reading guys, GL!

NL2 + Bankroll Building by Motiva, August 26

Sup LP

I'm fresh from TL.net, I've been playing poker casually for a couple of years now at bars and with friends. I used to also play a good number of micro tourney's on PS with mediocre results. Losing more than winning, but winning enough to play for quite some time even without -any- bankroll management. About 3 months ago I decided to make the switch to cash games.

I've been reading up on poker. I just started Theory of Poker, so I'm hoping that will help me out a little with my game. I've read the Harrington tourny series and a few others. After ToP I'm thinking I'll move on to the Harrington Cash game series, and possibly some books on the Psychology of poker. Any suggestions?

Since starting with cash games my results were pretty atrocious to start. After some adjustments I made a fairly decent run at NL25 with a $50 deposit. I don't know how bad I was tilted towards the end, but it seems pretty bad IMO. + Show Spoiler +

After that run I realized how important bank roll really is. So I've made another $50 deposit and I've start at .1/.2NL and I've had mediocre results. I've been playing 1k-2k hands a day for the past few days. I tried to switch to .2/.5 when I hit 75 (buying in at $3) and I lost money there so I'm dropping down to .1/.2 again.

Current Results:
+ Show Spoiler +

I don't really know anyone else that plays poker. Most of the people I talk to think I'm wasting my time AND money. I feel really confident though, and am willing to invest a lot of time. So, since the Liquid Poker people who I don't know are the only people I know in the poker scene, here I am. Any Advice, Suggestions, Obvious problems with my stats?

I also mainly 6 max 6tables .1/.2.. I've been thinking about switching it up to 9max. I've also been fairly break even in 2-10$ heads up. Does it really just depend on your style or is there a particular method for building bank roll that is the most efficient?

Thanks

Create your MMA fighter! by Fox, August 26

So Keanureaver and I do this thing where we create these fictional hybrid fighters. They are something as simple as..

BJ penn and Tito ortiz (skill + cardio)

or something cute like

Randy Couture Anderson silva (the clinch of ultimate destruction)

or completely off the wall like

Megatron + GSP (Evil wicked lust for destruction + most balanced fighter ever)

So we would go on about who could beat who. Eventually we found a hybrid that was so unbeatable we just don't ever speak of it cuz it just shatters the laws of reason.

Some other favorites of mine

Kaoklai + Jacare
Faber + Lesnar
Miguel Torres + Arlovski
Genki Sudo + an unlimited pair of sunglasses
Crocop + Jon Fitch
Babalu + Chuck Lidell

graaaaaaaar i could go on forever.

5 yrs w/out a table! by k2o4, August 26

So don't ask me about houses!!!

He's back to the good old, "I'm a POW so don't be talkin to me bout houses" shit. And after a long answer about being a POW he doesn't even get the number of houses right - he completely missed his ranch in Montana which is definitely a place he stays at quite often. I thought he had 4 places he lives in, but now it sounds like 5 + another 2-7 "investment" properties, depending on which count you believe.

This really brings up 2 points: First he's overdoing this POW shit and it's fucking annoying. Second, is that he's, well, extremely rich, and I'll let this great article I just read called "Why McCain's Wealth Matters" explain why that is an important point. I'm gonna put the entire thing right here for you guys to read cause it gives some interesting facts that I didn't even know.

So McCain is rich. Or, his wife is rich, and that makes him rich too. Wasn't there some movie where Dudley Moore was engaged to a women with megabucks, and he kept getting drunk and introducing her to people as my 'financier' (instead of fiancée)?

For all the ink spilled over this last week, two related issues were under-explored, the latter of which is especially important: what's 'rich,' and why does it matter? What does McCain's wealth, and the way he talks about it, reveal about his ability to be a successful president?

On the first point--what means 'rich'?--there's no simple answer, no line in the economic sand that divides the rich from the rest. I'll get to the income data in a second, but they're only of marginal help here.

For one, there's tremendous geographical variation. If your family income is $100,000 in a rural area of a low-income state, you're well off. That income in Manhattan arguably puts you in the middle-class.

This example also suggests that there's a relative component to "rich." To be rich means you breath the rarified air in the upper reaches of the income scale. In a series of recent revealing remarks, McCain said he thought an income of $5 million made you rich. There's no doubt that's true, but if that's your income cutoff, almost nobody's rich.

The often-cited work of income analysts Piketty and Saez (see Table 0) reveals that admission to the top 1% of the income scale will run you a cool $375,000. Too many common folk there for your taste? Then you'll need about $600K to move up to the top half of the top 1% (i.e., the top 0.5%).

What's that? You want to roll with some serious money? It'll cost you $2 million to break into the top 0.1% (the top tenth of the top percent), and $10.5 million for the top 0.01% -- the top one-hundredth of the top one percent, average income: $30 million.

So yes, Cindy's $100 million in wealth, inherited from her family business, puts the McCain family solidly up there in the narrowest sliver of the richest of the rich. But numbers like these only give you an upper bound. Certainly, there are more rich people in America than those who reside in the 15,000 households of the top 0.01%.

My research on income class has led me to take a less quantitative approach to the question of who's middle class, rich, poor, etc. I think it has much to do with your choices and your access to opportunities.

Rich people's choices are generally not constrained by lack of income (boy, that sounds really obvious, but read on). Years ago when I worked with poor clients in New York City, I remember someone telling me they thought about cost before making a long-distance phone call.

Move up the "choices chain" and you get the picture. Middle class people tend not to think twice about a phone call, but a baby sitter, dinner, and a movie, is not a slam dunk right now, what with prices up and incomes down. And speaking of the price of transportation, vacations don't become "stay-cations" for rich people. Their choice set isn't constrained that way.

These choices may sound kind of trivial, but of course, there are real life-changing opportunities at stake here. One of my favorite -- well, least favorite, really -- factoids to make this point has to do with access to higher education. Once you control for cognitive ability, high-testing, low-income kids have the same (low) college completion rates as low-testing high-income kids. We do not, my fellow HuffPosters, reside in a meritocracy.

(If I may shamelessly tout my own work with colleagues at EPI, please read our forthcoming chapter on income mobility from the new State of Working America, out Labor Day -- though I'll see if I can get the mobility chapter posted here ASAP. It's a tour through this critical question of how challenging it is for people to get ahead given the mobility barriers they face these days. To us, this strikes at the heart of a basic American economic value. We may not believe in equal outcomes in this country, but we sure believe in equal opportunities. And the data on inequality and mobility suggest this basic value is under siege.)

Oh, and yes, if you don't know how many homes you own, you're definitely rich. (When I told my sister about this McCain gaffe last week, she responded: "Well, I don't know how many pairs of shoes I own." See...it's all relative.)

Which brings us to he who would be president. I understand and appreciate the urgency in campaigns to frame your opponent. In this case, the Obama team jumped quickly and effectively on these gaffes to paint McCain as elite and out-of-touch. But beyond the campaign politics, what do these statements, and more pointedly, his wealth, say about McCain as president?

After all, FDR was rich, and his empathy and energy devoted to helping the have-nots was boundless. Lots of politicians who came from humbler backgrounds but ended up rich, like Bill Clinton, John Edwards, or for that matter, Barack Obama, also built a policy agenda to offset the status quo regarding inequality and opportunity. Is it simply that rich Democrats get this in a way rich Republicans don't?

Perhaps so, though I'm sure there's lots of exceptions. Problem is, I don't think McCain is one of them. It is important to view his comments in the context of his agenda, which is as unempathic as his gaffes. As I pointed out last week (see Figure 1 here), his tax plan delivers by far the biggest boost to the average incomes of the richest households; Obama's plan does the opposite. McCain really does double-down on Bushonomics, which takes the inequities inherent in today's market outcomes, and injects them with a dose of steroids.

From this perspective, the problem isn't that he's rich. It's that his wealth is part of a package that strongly suggests he can't relate to the economic struggles faced by so many people from households that don't reside in the top "fractiles" of the income distribution. And if you can't relate, you're much less likely to craft and move a policy agenda that will help, a shortcoming we've seen much too much of in recent years.

This whole dust up reminded me of a CNBC spot I was on with Phil Gramm when he was still McCain's top economic advisor. He was going on about the supply-side, trickle-down nonsense that fits ever so neatly into these guys view of wealth. Arguing his case, Gramm said something like, "I've never been offered a job by a poor person. Have you?"

If government helps rich people, so goes this mythology, they'll unleash a torrent of economic activity that they're sitting on now because tax rates are too high. Cut the regulations that bind them, the taxes that squelch their incentives, and they'll not just lift their own economic fates, but those of the least advantaged as well.

The evidence, of course, points precisely in the opposite direction, but, and here's the kicker, these folks are impenetrable to evidence, and I fear their privileged positions make them so. Their wealth insulates them from reality in a way that you don't see from the other rich folk noted above.

It's not just that McCain can't relate to have nots, it's that he doesn't really want to. He wants to pull the levers that Phil Gramm and others tell him work best, and since he doesn't relate to folks who know very well how many homes they own -- though they may be uncertain whether they'll own them next month -- he lacks the motivation to question whether these levers actually work.

I don't care how much money our president has (though the seven homes thing really does seem beyond the pale given today's housing climate). But I deeply want him or her to understand the economic plight of those with less, and the evidence regarding the policies allegedly designed to help. When their wealth operates like empathy-killing blinders, then that wealth is a problem...a big one.

To listen to McCain last week, and to do so while poring over his policy agenda, really does suggest the dangerous degree to which he's out-of-touch. The Obama folks are right. We'd better work to keep him out of yet another house: the white one on Pennsylvania Ave.

I just couldn't make a hand and when I did its always second best. Every time I tried to bluff he somehow manages to always have some ridiculous 2pair or something.

I didn't play my best and probably should've quit earlier

Die cheater die by SakiSaki, August 26

First session of today Im 4-tabling 2/4 hu. I have this random guy on two of my tables, I stack him on both pretty quickly and he seems bad. He leaves one of the tables and stays on the other, chipping up a decent stack with some luck and some good play. I pound on him pretty bad and I can tell he is getting very frustrated.

So this hand comes up:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/511962

He instapots both streets and Im pretty sure he is weak in this spot and I know I will represent sick strenght shoving the turn. This given the good equity of the hand itself makes for a pretty automatic shove imo. He starts tanking and I start thinking "HE IS WEAK, IM.. IM IN GOLDEN!" As his timer runs down I suddenly realize Im sitting at a table with fucking disconnect protect! Jesus fucking chirist, I never sit at those but I musthave by misstake. Obv the little cheating faggot "disconnects" and gets a free showdown with his crappy top pair.

I call him out on his bullshit calling him a cheater etc when he conveniately comes back 30 sec after showdown. He claims to be at a hotel with bad connection. LOL

Now usually I would leave the table to prevent getting cheated again but fuck, this guy is now up on me and Im getting my fucking money back from this asshole.

Unfortunately he runs good, I run bad and I play kinda meh. There are some spots where I think I should have shoved but wussed out. All in all, he was being really aggro, especially on the river. He also called down like two streets with random overs rutinely however everytime I called him he had magicly hit on the river.

Even fish are hard to play when they have momentum and this guy was really spazzy. At one point he is sitting with $2,4k and Im sitting with $400. Now Im contemplating just leaving and cutting my losses cause things arent going my way at all. I just cant get over the fact that the guy cheated! I calmed down, told myself that this guy is a huge fish and if I just play well and diciplined I will get all his money.

I start taking down more and more pots, gaining some momentum and overall just playing better and the big turning point comes in this hand:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/511963

I played it kinda weird and Im not sure if I like my CiB on the flop all that much but I had done it before and he just clicked it back to me with complete air. Turn and river are pretty standard though. SHIP!

After that hand it was only a matter of time before he blew up so I tightened up a bit and waited for a good spot to get it in:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/511964

Im usually pretty manner at the tables, if someone needles me I might needle them back but thats about it. In general I believe you should always behave calm and politely at the tables and I see no reason to be an ass.

Cheaters, however, I consider fair game. They are like a rapist in prison. I can do whatever the fuck I want to them without feeling bad or anything so after winning that hand I went medieval on his ass. In short i told him thank you, called him an ugly cheater and thought out loud about what I was going to buy for all his pretty money. For a moment I felt like frinkx, I trashtalked like a fucking champ!

In turn he went nuts, rebought and called me a fish etc etc. Now one of the most beautiful things in heads up poker is when your opponent is tilting and you are making hands. Its just wonderful. Pure fucking joy. It actually felt like the universe was punishing this faggot for being a spineless cheater.

wish I could have slowrolled him here

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/511966

final hand

Unfortunately the hand histories dont record the chat but I can assure you I thanked him properly at showdown in all of those hands.

I ended up 2,2k on this faggot and it feels so GOOOOODDD!!! SHIP IT!

I also played a short session against ScHnibL0r at 2/4. Hes originally a high stakes limit player I think(?) and I think that showed in some of the plays he made but all in all I think he played solid and he ended up taking a buyin from me before leaving. Starcraft fighiting!!!

Also, KRANTZ is fucking hilarious. Its worth a deucescracked subscription just to hear him tell stories in some of his videos, he just cracks me up completely every time.

crushing 50nl by flounder44, August 26

Moved up about last week when i hit 1k mark. Hopefully by friday when rb comes ill be taking shots at 100nl. Today was almost my first losing day in a while. Started playing in the morning my br was at like 1,430 then peaked to 1460 before dropping to 1330ish. After school i took like a 2 hr nap now im on top of my game. Theres so many loose players + setminers so i tightened up a bit than what ive been playing recently. My current session (playing it right now) i have 1500 hands and saw 10% of flops in fullring. Br as of now is 1.43k. Gonna take shots at 100nl when i reach 2k then drop down when i hit 1800.

School started today kidn of a bummer. Work + school gonna prevent me from playing hella hours but ill play 12am-4am if i have to.
