So I have been running pretty bad lately where basically every turn or river is a "sick card." As a result I tend to get a little steamed and lose a bit more than I should. I'm also down like 10 buy ins in the last 2 days and as a result of that I tend to be a little reckless to try to make it up faster than I should. I'm thinking up to plo25 from plo10 because I find when I move up I tend to tighten up and play really solid poker. The "running bad" thing doesn't bother me as I don't believe my history of cards over the past few days will effect the cards I am dealt today. I've got 50+ buy ins for my current stakes and 20+ if I were to move up. I was waiting for 30 to move up but I feel the best way to get out of this downswing is to focus harder and the best way to do that is to move up in stakes.
Has anyone moved up on a downswing before and how did it go for you?
So I just had my biggest winning month (doubled my roll) and I needed a medium to show off my sexy graphs. I've been playing for like 1.5 years now but only started playing a lot more this semester and I feel like I've really improved my game these past months. Went from 8=> 6tabling and playing looser/taking lots of notes which at 50nl finally seems to be of much more use since I run into the same guys a lot more than I used to at 25 and 10nl. roll=2.8k atm, think I'll start taking shots at 100nl once I hit 3.5k
Yesterday I also had the weirdest thing happen to me. I watched the movie Elephant which is about a high-school shooting the night before and as I walked home last night I was thinking about the movie, I saw our car parked outside our house and was thinking how come none of these nutjobs who just want to kill as many people as possible hadn't thought of just taking a car and driving into a crowd which is 10x easier than trying to obtain weapons. Ten minutes later I watch the news and see this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8028317.stm
Am I the only one who seriously CANNOT win at all for the last month? No matter how good I get it in, it holds so rarely its vomit inducing. I've never had a month where I've seen so much ridiculous shit. Heres just a sampling, PLEASE leave any comments on hands that you think I misplayed. I REALLY want feedback as I don't think I'm playing terribly.
Please please, feedback is ENCOURAGED. Just say the number next to the hand and your comments.
Yeah I guess thats enough, thats just a sampling from the last week. I really honestly think I'm playing well. If anyone who is a regular at nl50 or nl100 full ring is interested in sharing opinions on hands or helping each other out, please PM me. I have AIM (which I use far more regularly) and msn.
I think I saw rockman make a post offering to help others, so maybe I'll contact him, hmm.
This month has been particularly frustrating as I think I've learned a lot and actually redefined my "game" or whatever. Its so fucking annoying when the results do nothing but dissuade you from such an idea. For the entire month I'm up 2 buy ins at nl50. Thats pretty fucking pathetic imo as its not even a difficult level.
I think I'm going to start updating my blog again so hopefully this will be the first post of many.
I was playing the Midnight Madness and it was my last tourney of a shitty day of grinding, and I was already pissed at how I busted 14th in the $11 1r1a on stars like 10 minutes before thi. I pretty much started going crazy in the chat after getting it in pre with KK against AK and 88 to almost triple up but lost all but like 3BB, and then some railbird just started giving it to me. Acdawg712 was watching and told me I should put the chat into an xtranormal movie, and it actually turned out somewhat funny the way the computer says some of it =P.
Not only am I the resident forum comedian, I also play poker on the side.
[X] Platinum star - grinded 4 hours of eyeball crushing 6max everyday this past week when I didn't think I would make it, but kept a promise to myself. So, I deeeed it.
[X] NL50 - Vanquished your face
[X] Taste of NL100 - Some adjusting is needed, seems beatable and more high variance. Tilt control is really key here.
Lets see a +2k graph in my birthmonth baby! Oh and I love you all my dear children
So basically April started off great, wanted to play a shitload of hands and i did, i didnt' even have a full month to play. (I only had 3 out of the 4 weeks of this month to play.), i also found time to slam in 200 11$ turbo sngs as well over a few sessions.
April started off great as i said before, pulled off a few huge bluffs in a couple seshs vs the same regulars and was able to start getting paid on my monsters using the same lines as said bluffs, everything felt like it was clicking and i knew i was bound for 100nl soon, using a 22-24BI rule. I went to toronto for a fun vacation and to fuck around for 7 days, and came back refreshed and ready to crush 100nl. But in order to warm up, i thought i'd do a fun 50nl warm up session.
I ended up getting murdered for an entire week, set over set, losing 70 30's , 90 / 10's, etc etc. I would look at HEM3 and die inside at the +EV graph vs $$ gained graph. I was basically running horrendous and was on the verge of imploding when i looked back at some people's comments to just play through it and focus on DECISIONS, not results. It's easier to say you will follow it, but until you hit a brutal downswing it's a HUGE testament to one's determination / character / focus. I'm glad to say i survived through it. Looks like 100nl will have to wait another week or so, but i feel that i've recovered mentally, and it's only a matter of time before i get back up there.
Brag: played 50k hands + 200 sngs in 3 weeks , most ive ever played ever
Beat: Last 30k hands of said 50k were horrendous losing / break even, but towards the tail end i regained confidence in my ability to play. made +250$ or so in SNG's
Variance: I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH RAKEBACK IM GETTING BUT IM HOPING ITS ALOT D:. I've found my sweet spot is 10 tabling FR. 14-16 was too much to make optimal value, and 8 is too boring.
May Goals-
Short term: 2.2k BR > take a shot at 100 nl , move down after losing 2 bi
Mid term: Become 100nl reg by end of may
Long term: 1/2 by end of june / start of july? one time!
april ended on a good note(5250usd incl rb) and although it was kinda swingy towards the end and totally nerveracking to say the least, i did manage to end at the peak and came out on top. not an awesome month but for me since i played 200nl mostly ending april, it did give me back all that i lost from those moving up coolers and gave me some winnings to boot. im starting the may month at 200nl and im definitely going to play most of my hands there and probably visit my 100nl friends once in a while . Ive hit my 100kvpp now so the milestones are next and im definitely going to shoot for a 600kvpp minimum this year, i dont think itd be that hard at all if i play and get used to 200nl and im quite happy that after a year im finally going for it. i dont care much for variance that much since ive already bought that car and it feels great everytime i drive/get laid using my poker skillzzzzzzzzzz lol. peace
note:
graph's data is kinda skewed since i played a lot of 50nl the first week and 100nl 2nd and 3rd week.
Ok so at my school we have faculty advisers that are assigned to students according to their last names. The faculty advisers help students with scheduling conflicts, general questions, help with internships/employment, etc. My adviser is named Jess Depew. She's pretty hot. She's like 25 and she's only been at the school a few years. Anyway, I have been looking into getting an internship at Disneyland or something over the summer, and the school helps coordinate these things with an internship database that's maintained by the advisers. You log on with your school ID and password and you can browse internships and stuff. I was having trouble logging on to mine so I went to see Ms. Depew. That's where all the trouble started.
Firstly, I walked into her office like 15 minutes early like an idiot and she's in the middle of lunch. So I awkwardly make stupid stall talk until she's finished.
"Oh, hey, whatcha eating?"
"Salmon. I love it. I eat it practically everyday."
"Just salmon? That's pretty weird." Why the hell did I say this?
"Oh, well, I don't know. I try to eat healthy, natural foods... you know, like wild berries and honey and stuff."
"Yeah, I like food too." *facepalm*
Man, I was so nervous. Anyway, we finally begin squaring my stuff away. She looks up what I registered with in the beginning of the year. This is when the crap really hit the fan. This is how the conversation went:
"Okay, your account name is [my name] and your password is ...'depewissexy'..."
Oh damn, I completely forgot that I put that as my password in the beginning of the year. What the hell was I thinking? It was probably the longest 20 seconds of my life before I finally got my balls together to stand up and leave. Just as I walk out the door, she says,
"In the future, you might want to bear in mind what kind of things you want to keep to yourself."
I was so fucking embarrassed I wanted to kill myself right then and there. I wanted to run the hell out of there and never, ever see her again. But something about what she just said kept me standing in her doorway. I decided to man up and apologize. I turned to her, looked her straight in the eyes, and swallowed my pride. And then, it hit me like a trainful of bricks.
She was eating salmon.
She tries to eat all healthy, natural foods, like wild berries and honey.
She told me that I might want to bear in mind what kind of things I want to keep to myself.
Ms. Depew was a bear disguised as a human.
Immediately, the bear saw that I had seen through its charade. It roared loudly and took a menacing swipe at me. I deftly avoided its claw and sprinted out of the office. The bear was soon in chase, crushing through the walls of the office as if they were made of paper. I jumped over the receptionist desk and ran out the back entrance. The bear followed, tossing the secretary aside like a rag doll. The bear began to pursue me through the street traffic. While I fought my way through the maze of vehicles, the bear simply careened its massive force through anything standing in its way. Cars veered off the road to escape the onslaught of grizzly force that was barreling down the road. The bear was gaining fast. I had no other option but to make my way into the nearest building: a preschool. I burst through the door, startling the children from their naps. Immediately, the bear slammed through the wall, crushing a child beneath its massive paws and burying several other children in sheet rock and debris. I maneuvered my way through the chaos and towards the back exit. The pre-schoolers were little more than a screaming annoyance for the bear. Its massive paws cut swaths through the sea of toddlers with each swipe. I used the precious time these children had afforded for me to make my escape into the playground. I scrambled up a ladder to a fort-like structure. My goal was to walk across the monkey bars then jump to a tree which I could climb to the roof of the preschool and perhaps flag down a passing helicopter.
Even tried shortstacking 200nl.It went terrible -$300 (7.5 ss bi's), no more SS.
With RB I am down ~$500.That's my first loosing month ever.
Other than that the turbo costs $1.2k.Lets hope it will arrive before lunch so I could drive by the evening.
I feel i played the best poker this month, at the beginning of the month i had 20 bucks in both poker accounts after my downswing and was on the verge of smashing my monitor. Fortunately my boy gave me some good support and told me i had to grind this shit through the good and bad times. My biggest leak was definitely paying off with TPTK and not folding enough when raised on latter streets. That has all changed.
In May i plan to grind out nl25 for a bit and see how it goes and possibly move up to nl50, as i am rolled for it once my bonus clears. I'm not working , and hope to put in a 100 hour month for the first time. I might switch to another site for another 100% bonus and/or Rakeback, but i really dont wanna make the same mistake i made before and move to a low traffic shitty site where im playing the same nit regs EVERY day all day, where the live ones at??
well, after april started off with a bang in the first week, the 2nd week killed me and i decided to take the rest of the month off. so it's going to be a down month, but i'm happy that i have some tilt control atleast.
overall april was a good month. i got a job now for the summer so i'll be in NYC if anyone wants to hit me up.
next month + this summer should be good for poker tho.
Yup, only played 12k hands and I'm a 12 tabler. I went through a bunch of hands and there are a few I played horribly, but I mostly ran bad. I checked my database and got KK vs AA 5 times and AA vs KK 0 times, so either people are soul reading me or I just ran a little bad O_O.
But anyways, I haven't been playing much poker because I've been working on the poker club I started at my school and other poker related things. Here's a few things I've been doing:
1. I emailed PokerStarsPartners (PokerStars' affiliate website) if they were willing to help provide for the club this upcoming semester, and they pretty much said they'd be glad to do so. Obviously I'd have to be promoting them somehow, so I outlined a small business plan and how I'd go about doing so. They said they were interested and to provide them with more info when the club launches next semester.
2. Emailed CardRunners support to try and contact Taylor Caby about the club since he's a graduate of my school. He quickly responded to me personally in only a few hours and said he was going to come down to U of I to give a speech for a business class. He also said it would be cool to meet up sometime while he was down. I went down there with rS.Wisdom (same school) and we met Taylor and chatted with him a bit. He's a really, really nice guy, and you can tell he is genuinely interested in any conversation you have with him. He said he'd be glad to help out next year, and even do some CardRunners stuff. By the way, what are some good vids to watch on the site?
3. Contacted the team that I work with for my site (great guys, you can look up their services at heathmont.net). They said they'd definitely be willing to work on a site for the poker club, so I won't have some ghetto webpage that I made via my own obsolete HTML.
4. Emailed Barry Greenstein to try and get him to come as well, since he's also a graduate of my school. He responded but he didn't really seem interested .

Anyways, you see the poker club as part of the UIUC student organization here:
It's listed under Athletic/Recreation, and the club is called "Illini Poker Club". You can also see it if you look under the letter "I".
School is about to end, and I'm pretty much devoting this entire summer to poker. I'm going to be working on my own game, the club, as well as my site. I've been donking around at NL100 for a while now, but I just haven't been putting the hours in, and I've been cashing out a bit, something I thought I would never do until I hit NL200. You can expect me to become extremely active on the forums in about a month.
Good luck at the tables!
PS: For all of you who haven't read rockman's blog, gogogo
Proof that you can turn from a 24-tabler nutpeddler into a 8 tabling monster.
April Results, 1st month in Vegas!by Night2o1, April 30
April results are in! (Except for the big session I plan to put in today)
Vegas has been good to me so far. I definitely beat up on 2/5 a bit (but haven't been able to play it full time due to BR issues). I overall broke even on my 5/10 shots (but I ran teh badz).
Staying with Myth, and Frink for a week, has been a lot of fun even though the main focus has been grinding. I slowed down a bit this past week or so as far as the grindtrain goes but I will be hopping back on for May. I *have* to put in mass hours and hopefully have a huge month so that I can be properly rolled for 5/10 come WSOP.
Myth has been looking at looking at a WSOP house and has visited a number of them, I went to one of the choices yesterday.. very nice place. We're checking out another one today that has its own mini-theater, pool, spa, and pool table of course.. lol ^^
Hopefully I'll feel like writing more entertaining stuff this coming month, but this is it for now.
My graph is missing some money here somehow, but whatever, I've had my biggest month evarz. Next month's goal is 10k and not to spend half of it :/ LOL. I REALLY need to win 10k+ so I'm crossing my fingers and rubbing my lucky rabbits foot.
my first table was amazing........first hour i moved up over 80k then our table got broken up. unfortunately, it got broken up and i got moved to the chip leader/the heaviest chip table. i ended up being on the left of entropyxx lol. so table is pretty bad for me. im around 45-70k for 3-4 level of blinds there and the dinner break is coming around. seat two makes standard raise i and i make call in sb with a 10 hearts. flop comes k q 4 clubs. check check, turn is a 2 i put about 11k into a 15k pot, he calls. river comes 5. i bet 24k leaving me with 19kish. it goes about 7-9 minutes for him to call and i show nothing and he shows 9's. i feel pretty pwned. i mean is that line terrible ive showed down 1 hand in 4 hours of play which was kings.
next hand i have 9's and entropy raises to 6500, i raise all in for 19k and bb calls but doesnt mean to and the director had to be called and what not but he calls anyway flop A 10 4 turn Q river blank..........bb has kj entropy k10 doesnt matter im out. vacation starts tonite
came in like 220ish over all i feel good about my play. i did have some blunders but no regrets.
School is out... Time to Grind. + April.by SmokingDough, April 30
I wrote my last exam last night and it went alright. I was pretty happy going into exams this semester because there was no way I could fail any classes going into them so I wasnt sweating it as much this time around... I like that feeling lol.
But now that Im done school I have A LOT of free time on my hands. I dont have a job right now and dont really want to get one so Im going to play a shit ton of poker to make up for this and hopefully get some great results along the way. So the goal is to play atleast 4+ hrs everyday. I should be able to do this no problem. I will for sure be taking breaks during this time and stopping when the tables are no long good. Bum hunting ftw.. lol.
April was a fuckin headache for me. I was on pace for having my bes tmonth ever but then I got pwned by variance and went on a big downer which was not fun at all. I think I ploayed pretty well through it though and things could of gotten a lot worse. I guess I cant complain that much because I still ahd a pretty great month but it really should have been A LOT better.
So book the $870 month. Pretty decent considering the downer but I for sure would have past the 1k month which would have been my biggest winning month in poker ever! Cmon MAY!
Recently Ive been playing a lot of Full ring poker. I had a friend who plays higher then I do and always told me I should focus on playing Fullring because its a pretty easy game with low variance. I decided to take his advice and try it out. So far my results have been pretty good and Im enjoying myself. The problem is the site I play on never has more then 10+ FR games going at the level I play at so sometimes I have to play in the lower games which I dont have a problem with either. Hopefully this change goes well.
