First shot at live poker
blackjacki2, May 26 2009
So I finally played at a live poker room for the first time this last night. I would say I played fairly nitty, but I also didn't get many hands for a full ring game over the 4 hours I played. I was also playing $2/$2 and the max buy in by law is $100 so there isn't a lot of room to gamble if you don't pick a hand you like.
Best hands for the first 1 hour was A3os and 22, neither of which led to much. Got grinded down to $60 or so until I picked up QQ. Raised it preflop and got a couple of calls. Flop was J42, got it all in vs KJ and doubled up.
2nd big hand I played I got AJ and raised to $10, got a couple callers. Flop was 79J and I fired on the flop and turn and got raised all in on the turn. I folded and the dude to my left called. The shover had 8T of course.
next big hand I played I got QJ, called a preflop raise. Flop was QJ7. Another dude and myself get it all in on the flop and he turns over J7. Doubled up.
Then I just folded a ton more. Pretty much everyone at the table had me pinned as a super nit, which I figured. I wasn't really there to gamble, just to win, and with rake and tips I figured playing as little as possible was an okay strategy. Finally I got the dealer button and figured I could take any pot I wanted with my image. Raised it to $10 preflop with 48os, got 2 callers. Flop came AQx, check check, I bet 20. Fold, other guy tanks and says "will you show if I fold?" "Yeah i'll show." Felt nice flipping over the 48.
Ended the night up $80 which was nice. The poker room I was at was celebrating their 1 year anniversary and were giving away $500 every half hour for the high hand. There was only like 50 tables but you'd be surprised how many straight flushes can be hit in a 4 hour period. I'd say I was running above average on the flop but I was running below average with starting hands. Almost all of my starting hands were 2 non-suited cards both under ten. If they were suited I would play them for the shot at the straight flush and high hand, but I'm not durrrr so I don't pay to see a flop with 67os.

My last blog I talked about moving up to PLO25 from PLO10 because I was running terribly at PLO10. I decided not to "move up" but I did take a couple shots over the last few days. I think it's possible that people at PLO25 play worse than people at PLO10. They play so incredibly bad it's hard to imagine. I'm up like 5 buy ins in 200 hands compared to down 10 buyins over the last 2 weeks in PLO10. Of course I'm running extremely good in PLO25 and extremely poor in PLO10, but the skill of my opponents still seems much lower at PLO25.
For example..

Hand 1 - How on earth do you flat on the turn with the nuts out of position! WTF
Hand 2 - How do you not raise that flop with the nuts with all that action in front of you? Letting 2 other people see the turn on that board without a raise is pretty ridiculous. Even if you're trying to pot control to give yourself fold equity, that's only useful if you actually fold when you get outdrawn.
Moving up on a downswing?
blackjacki2, May 01 2009
So I have been running pretty bad lately where basically every turn or river is a "sick card." As a result I tend to get a little steamed and lose a bit more than I should. I'm also down like 10 buy ins in the last 2 days and as a result of that I tend to be a little reckless to try to make it up faster than I should. I'm thinking up to plo25 from plo10 because I find when I move up I tend to tighten up and play really solid poker. The "running bad" thing doesn't bother me as I don't believe my history of cards over the past few days will effect the cards I am dealt today. I've got 50+ buy ins for my current stakes and 20+ if I were to move up. I was waiting for 30 to move up but I feel the best way to get out of this downswing is to focus harder and the best way to do that is to move up in stakes.
Has anyone moved up on a downswing before and how did it go for you?
I love Omaha

Same table, 4 consecutive hands, I get dealt a pocket pair and I flop a set. That's bat shit insane even for Omaha.
Need help multi-tabling
blackjacki2, Apr 22 2009
If you have a spare moment please do me a favor and take a screenshot of your poker set-up when you're playing at least a few tables. Right now I play 2 tables of Omaha at pokerstars. I'm going to be looking to start 4 tabling. I like the tile tables at pokerstars but I think I have a problem with my resolution because the text doesn't come in very clear. I'm using a 19" LCD wide monitor. Any tips/help is appreciated!
Not a single hand in 3 hours
blackjacki2, Apr 19 2009
So I went to play live poker last night. As soon as we sat down 5 handed I got some of the sickest cards back to back to back. First 5 card draw I got dealt trip 6s. Then 5card stud I got dealt an ace with an ace in the hole, which is a crazy good hand. Then Omaha I got quad jacks. I also got a few other pretty decent hands. I ended up winning 6 of the first 7 hands and I was up a buy in in 10 minutes.
Then I went on one of the coldest streaks I've ever seen. I couldn't even make a pair in Omaha. No draws, no nothing. For three full hours I didn't win a single pot. Luckily I very quickly realized I wasn't getting and hands so I tightened up and managed to limit my losses to usually no more than $1 per hand (not hard to tighten up when you get shit). So after three hours my $100 stack turned into $30 (buy in was 50) without winning A SINGLE POT. Then I one a decent pot from a 5card draw hand where my pair of aces turned into trips on the redeal. I lost a lot of that profit a few hands later in the same game where my kings up lost to a flush.
Then I didn't get any more hands. Finally we agreed one more go around of the table. With about 3 hands to go I was down to $15 and I got AAT4 double suited in Omaha. Basically 99% of the hands we play for Omaha, someone just bets a dollar preflop and everyone calls. So I checked and waited for someone to bet the $1, everyone called it, and when it came back to me I raised $3 more. The flop came 2 spades, giving me the nut flush draw. I bet the limit $3 every street and I was so confident that I was going to hit the nut flush on the river, which I did. That pot was about $37.
I finished the night with exactly my buy in. Fortunately we also do this thing sometimes where people chip in $5 at the start of the night and whoever has the highest hand of the night wins the pot. My quad jacks held up over the night so I went home with $15 profit. Not too bad, but I wish I got some more cards cause I was playing pretty well and this is a really easy table to beat.
