400nl
  royalsu, Jun 01 2008

I've decided to make 400nl my game from now on. I made 3k yesterday in 5k hands and 0$ today in a grueling 12 hour session (9k hands).

It's definitely not easy emotionally as I've been constantly +-1k today in both directions so many times. You can lose so quick at 400nl; two flips, one ill-timed bluff, a couple of cbets that don't work, and you're down 1-2k already.

I've made some good reads but I'm leaking a ton of money in medium sized pots. I think I need to double barrel and checkraise more on the turn. I'm basically giving up way too easily in spots where the opposition just doesn't have much. I'm also not value betting thin enough on the river, preferring oftentimes to check just to see what he was calling me down with.

Tomorrow I plan vegas with my friend. Hopefully she breaks up with her bf before the trip.

introducing myself
  royalsu, May 31 2008

My brother Tien (retired aka crackyoface) introduced me to poker in my first year of undergraduate studies 4 years ago and I've been playing on and off since then. I've always been able to destroy the games but my biggest leak is the occasional tilt session. I've quit poker before due to one bad week long session at 400nl-200nl where I spewed off 10k. I remember sitting there with 10k in my account and wondering if I should spread my roll against peachy at 5knl.

I've basically finished my Pure and Applied Math degree at the university of Waterloo. During my last semester 5 months ago I didn't really study much and played a ton of poker starting with a 2k roll at 200nl. I made 20k in January and then thought I was the greatest player and broke even in February while trying to outplay everyone. I no longer try to be the biggest lagtard at the table but instead focus on making the most money. I now play a low variance tag style with a much lower cbet percentage then before and I'm making very good money.

I'm going to use this blog to update life events as well as some poker results. I don't think I'll be posting any hand analysis because there's too many lurkers out there. Some of my plans are to supplement my income through coaching as well as create some training manuals with hand histories similar to harrington's book.

And nobody wish me luck...I don't believe in it. I have faith in one thing only: reason. Poker is a game of skill and I don't believe in bad runs because I've never had one. If I ever lose a couple of flips, I still think that my edge in non-showdown pots should make up for the losses. There will be no whining in this blog.
