Other

- A lightweight bout between Evan Dunham and The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2 winner Leonardo Santos, originally scheduled for this event, was moved to UFC 199 after a minor injury to Dunham delayed the match-up a few weeks.
- The event is expected to feature the long anticipated debut of former Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Champion and current Invicta FC Featherweight Champion Cristiane Justino in a catchweight bout of 140 lbs against Leslie Smith.
- Kamaru Usman was expected to face Sergio Moraes at the event. However, he pulled out two weeks before the event due to injury and was replaced by promotional newcomer Luan Chagas.
- Former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was expected to face Uriah Hall at the event. However, Silva pulled out just four days before the event with a clinical condition that indicated acute cholecystitis and required surgical intervention. The UFC wanted to find a replacement for him, but Hall opted against that.

This card is really good imo, can't wait for it.
Maia being on the prelims says something.

Agree Floofy, great card:

Miocic v Werdum - Pickem, head says Miocic heart says Werdum. I think this has a strong chance of going the distance and being very close on the cards.
Souza > Belfort - Odds are too wide though
Hall > Silva - Probably gonna be terrible but could be awesome
Cyborg > Smith
Anderson > Rua
Maia > Brown - Odds are way too wide
Alves > Barberena
Santos > Marquardt
Font > Linekar - Gonna be close, awesome fight, huge step-up for Font but I think he's ready
Cummins > Noguiera
Trinaldo > Medeiros
Moraes v Chagas - Dunno
Tukgugov > Moicano

Sick card : )

My possible bets:

Miocic TKO/KO +350
Shogun +180 (Maybe I dont touch this bet)
Matt Brown +240 or by TKO +405 (I know he has not a good TDD but I almost always think he has a chance as he has a great hearth)
Cyborg by KO + Anderson +140

Maia is going to finish Brown, imo. The guy is an absolute wizard on the ground and Brown has had troubles with grapplers before. Other than hurting Maia early and finishing him, I don't see how Brown can take this fight. Once it hits the mat he is getting manhandled.

Card is sick. One of the best ever. I am on Lineker at opening odds, thinking about Cummins and Cyborg R1.

Also like Stipe chances a lot, missed the opening lines. Will hope some money come in on Werdum.

Yesterday, I saw several people mention they were parlaying Cyborg Round 1 & Maia ML @ +123. Not sure what the odds are now.

Have a hard time understanding why people think Stipes chances are so good. I'm reading everywhere people picking him or thinking it's a flip.

Werdums thai clinch and BJJ completely neutralize and dominate Stipes wrestling. And Werdum has beat a lot of good strikers with his striking lately. Wrecked Cain, Browne, and KO'd Hunt.

Not sure what Stipes done to impress everyone so much. Most of the strikes he landed against JDS were because of clinch. Either coming off the clinch, or faking it and making JDS drop his hands to avoid the clinch then landing. This won't be problem for Werdum because he doesn't care about getting taken down and will go for the Muay Thai clinch, somewhere Stipe really doesn't want to be.

Other than that he flash ko'd Arlovski which doesn't say a lot to me because it's Arlovski, and decision'd Gonzaga, Nelson, and got KO'd by Struve.

Not to say that it isn't impressive, just nothing that indicates he's a better striker than Werdum is now.

I feel this fight will mostly be fought at a distance since Stipe won't want to grapple, and Werdum will have the advantage with his kicks. If he tries to pressure Werdum I see him ending up in the clinch a lot eating knees.

I also think Werdum has a solid cardio advantage. Stipe usually seems pretty tired by the 3rd while Werdum is doing kip ups.

Rest of card

Jacare grapple fucks Vitor
Silva vs Hall - hard to say, Silva is completely washed up and Hall is just a headcase. Good chance they both stare at each other for 15 minutes and nothing of great significance happens, or one lands a super ninja ko.

Rua vs Anderson - hard to say, Shogun looks god awful these days. He's looking fat as shit right now too. Dunno

Maia grapple fucks Brown

Stipe has been improving at a very fast rate since his loss to Struve. You underestimate him a lot here Stim.

He has better footwork, wrestling and boxing and is more athletic than Werdum. Obv Fabricio is more crafty, has more experience, great clinch and BJJ. Imo this is a very close and intriguing fight.

I can easily see Stipe using his footwork to box Werdum up mixing in some takedowns as well. If he can stay away from the clinch and can hang on the ground with Fabricio it is his fight to lose and he has all the skills to do so.

Also don't see Werdum to have solid cardio advantage here. Miocic has a very good cardio himself, one of the best in the HW div.

At over +150, Stipe is a great value. This fight is a flip for me.

Stim_Abuser   United States. May 10 2016 01:20. Posts 7499

Eh you might be right, I rewatch some old fights and his boxing is faster/more crisp than I expected.

I guess his JDS fight just sticks in my mind. While he did surprise everyone with how well he did, he looked gassed/zombie mode from like round 3 on, but to be fair both took a bunch of heavy leather early so they were pretty beat up.

Besides that we haven't seen much striking from him lately. super quick KO against Arlovski, wrestle fest on Hunt, fight with JDS, and super quick KO over brawldanado. Then theres the Gonzaga fight where he lost the first round.

Dunno, his speed and length might give Werdum troubles. It's probably closer than I first expected.

I used to believe Stipe was going to take this one but the more I think about it I think Werdum wins.

Stipe is a technical tight grinding boxer, he isnt a counterpuncher waiting for Werdum to open up, I think this kind of fighter doesnt do great vs Werdum striking wise, for example Travis Browne allowed Werdum to go wild with his kickboxing kicking at will, the same applies to Cain, they are strikers that arent trying to get the perfect timing to KO you, so Werdum can do whatever the fuck he wants, kick, sloppy combos into clinch etc.

I think this fight might look a lot like Werdum vs Browne.

BTW on Silva vs Hall I cant remember a fight with so much potential to be fight of the year or being worse than Kimbo vs Dada

got the miocic, souza, anderson silva, corey anderson, maia parlay. plus another + cody garbrandt a week later,

I feel like stone does that some of the fights seem locklike but the odds arent there.

maia ML + cyborg rd 1 at +123 is intriguing i will take that all day. gonna look it up but i dont see how. cyborg had rousey like odds (over -1k and maia -300. parlaying and just putting rd 1/3 drops it that much?)

Think werdum could easily win and originally thought he would but ive watched a couple fights and think miocic may outbox him, stay on the feet, maybe win a decision

Cyborg's money line (ML) had "Rousey-like odds," not her Round 1 prop.

Cyborg's R1 prop is currently -160 on 5dimes. Maia's ML is currently -300.

I've seen some pictures of him recently from embedded and promo stuff, and the pictures weren't great so it's hard to tell but he looks in way better physical shape than the Weidman/Hendo 3 fights. The fights also in Brazil, which is where he had is TRTor run.

If he's back hard on the sauce, his chances are obviously much better.

put $50 on Brown at +235 and Stipe at +140

Just feel that Maia and Werdum have overachieved a bit lately, and that elite jiu jitsu is at least somewhat neutralized by decent cardio.

Stim_Abuser   United States. May 10 2016 21:38. Posts 7499

Brown vs Maia is only 3 rounds. Maia's cardio sucks but it's usually good enough to go 3 rounds, especially with a guy who has pretty average take down defense. And while his BJJ has improved a lot it's still far from great.

Maia isn't just great at BJJ, he's got some of the best takedowns in the division and a great chin. Think he's pretty close to a lock.

While I was watching the latest episode of The Fighter and the Kid, Brendan Schaub brought up that USADA (company that does the UFC drug testing) is what they use in the U.S., hence the "US" ADA (United Stated Anti Doping Agency). This UFC card is in Brazil, and Bryan Callen mentioned something along the lines of: "So all a fighter has to do is stay in Brazil for an extended period of time after their fight so they can clean their system and not fail a drug test?"

In other words, if this assumption is correct, a fighter who wanted to use steroids at UFC 198 could do so, and then just stay in Brazil on vacation for a couple months to avoid USADA's testing. Granted, the UFC does their own testing in Brazil and other places abroad, but it's not as good as USADA and WADA.

UFC 198 is the biggest and best UFC card to ever go to Brazil, so finding out that someone is using some type of PED to ensure a win wouldn't surprise me, especially for older fighters.

iirc USada requires to know where they are always. Well maybe not exactly where they are but they need to know how to find them. I think they have guys that can test them basically anywhere. It was on Rogans podcast a while back.

You're right.

Some other guys responded to my original comment/question on Sherdog:

"Don't UFC fighters have to agree to list their schedule and locations on an app and submit to random USADA testing even in whatever foreign countries they live and train in including Brazil? I recall reading numerous reports and seeing a lot of Instagram and Twitter images of fighters giving blood and urine at 7 am and such all over the globe. So no, I don't think they can hide in Brazil. USADA send people after them and if they hide or refuse they can get suspended by the UFC just for not being available for the tests."

&

"Everything i have heard and read regarding the new USADA is as he described. They will test you as a UFC fighter ...they dont care where u live/holiday.

Just FYI Schaub isnt the best at getting details right...he just get really excited."

"Uriah Hall was originally expected to remain on the card; however, the hourglass ran out of sand before pens could be put to paper. "Prime Time" will be slotted for a future card and at this point, it might make sense to just delay Silva vs. Hall until July."

They'll probably rebook the fight for UFC 200.

After reading Jack Slacks breakdown of Werdum vs Stipe I'm less confident in my Werdum pick. I guess his striking isn't as good as I thought.

tbh this is probably one of those cases I'm way off because I have a giant man crush on the doom.

I know. Almost everything in his striking breakdowns comes true fight time. He didn't seem think think there'd be a clear winner standing, and supports my theory that Stipe is likely to get tired if Werdum keeps up a decent pace.

Still, gonna stay away from betting it.

I thought it was a good one at -200, lol. Still Anderson got KO'd by Villante and was rocked by Tom Lawler in the 1st round, so probably going huge on him is not a very good idea.

Shogun is done, though. At - 150 Anderson is going to be my biggest bet for the night.

I also thought I was going to be relatively big on Corey when I first looked at this. But I can't help but think he hasn't actually developed as fast as people have expected him to...or really assume he has. Think Shogun is going to have his chances...maybe use some leg kicks at range and get Corey to bite on ill advised TD attempts from too far out. Or maybe that's some nostalgia playing it's part. Either way, I went from thinking I was going to be on Anderson pretty good to passing on the fight. It was pretty funny hearing him announced as his nickname of 'Beastin' 25/7' by a Brazilian announcer with a heavy accent at the weigh-in either way as well.

Going to be on Rob Font and Cummins. Think Font is going to use his height/range advantage to make it into more of a technical match than Lineker is used to..at least for a little while. Re-watched Cummins vs Texeira and was impressed remembering that Cummins actually got Texeira down relatively easy. It's just that Texeira is bullishly strong and was able to shuck Cummins off easily multiple times. Don't think lil Nog has that in him anymore.

Just a little on Brown and Stipe. Capped because I think I'm like 1-4 or 1-5 betting against the combo of Maia/Werdum recently. Two of the higher in-ring IQ's in the game. Really wanted to be on Stipe some more (like his boxing...think he's the one to finally bring Werdum's improved standup down) but can't go so big against Werdum and his sneakiness. Who really knew he'd KTFO Mark Hunt with a flying knee then just maul the shit out of Cain in the clinch. I sure didn't.

Final picks:

• Werdum > Miocic (I favor Werdum, but not by a lot. He has so many tools, and he never shows them all in any one fight. Miocic is the better pure boxer and has good wrestling, but he lacks in all other departments.)
• Souza > Belfort
• Cyborg > Smith
• Rua > Anderson (This might be a really good fight if it doesn't end early. Rua has the power and he is from Curitiba (the place where this card is being held), and he trained with Werdum and Cummins for this fight. Anderson has the size and wrestling, but he's sloppy and gets hit a lot. Still, no strong lean.)
• Maia > Brown
• Alves > Barberena (If Alves can't get a R1 submission, he'll be in bad shape and possibly get finished in R3.)
• Santos > Marquardt
• Lineker > Font (Font is the better technical boxer and has the height/reach, but he needs space to work, and he's facing a power puncher who loves to brawl and can take a punch. If Font can keep up his footwork for 15 minutes by sticking and moving, I see Font losing to Lineker by decision. Otherwise, Lineker wins via TKO.)
• Cummins > Nogueira (Another tough fight. Nog is beyond bad at this point, but he has done really well against guys like Cummins - wrestlers who aren't good strikers and don't have 1-punch power. However, if Nog ends up on his side or back, Cummins can eventually get a TKO at some point, depending on how long Nog is on the mat.)
• Trinaldo > Medeiros
• Moraes > Chagas (Probably Moraes, but he isn't worth betting at all. Chagas already had a fight lined up in May, and he'll probably be able to defend himself on the ground with his black belt in BJJ. Obviously Moraes is elite in BJJ, but I wouldn't touch his line in this fight.)
• Moicano > Tukhugov (What scares me is that Tuk rolled into Brazil with a squad of Russians, and Khabib Nurmagomedov was one of them. Assuming Moicano can keep it on the feet and avoid being laid on, I favor him to win a decision. Moicano is good at BJJ, but his counter striking and kicks should be able to win the fight on the feet.)

Sick scrambles and TDD from Renato Moicano.

Not a terrible performance from him, considering the amount of time he was away from MMA.

Anyone who picked Moraes on DraftKings just got owned. He was expensive and he doesn't get a win bonus, even though I thought he lost the fight, personally.

Chagas should've won, but he slowed down just enough in R2 to lose it, I guess... No idea who won R3.

I only played some 50/50s and double ups on draftkings and had cumins now my only chance to win is cyborg slipping and falling before she gets to the cage and having the fight canceled lol

iakim322   United States. May 15 2016 02:03. Posts 1335

Yancy's unreal chin only undone by his terrible fight IQ. Had Trinaldo tired and backing up only to spam some pretty useless spinning kicks. Then when he himself gets hurt, his solution is to stand wide stance while throwing back some looping shots around incoming straight shots. Didn't have a bet on the fight but I was rooting for Yancy

traxamillion   United States. May 15 2016 02:05. Posts 10468

wasnt a 30-26 tho, u could give the 2nd to medeiros. that fight has the furthest spread between decision numbers and how close it truly was maybe ever. had yancy not been hurt again in the 3rd he had good equity to win

It's so crazy how even Maia's telegraphed TD attempts are ones that he's still able to follow through on and get a body lock slapped on before you blink.

PuertoRican   United States. May 15 2016 04:15. Posts 13051

My original thought: Aside from the knock downs at the end of R1 and R2, I gave Anderson those rounds. So I could easily see 3-0 for Anderson, or 2-1 for Shogun, or a split.

A close fight against Shogun in Curitiba = sucks for the other guy.

Don't see how you could give Rd 1 to Corey. He had a bit of an edge in head strikes except not 1 was damaging and Shogun was pretty active with leg kicks before almost finishing Corey

iakim322   United States. May 15 2016 04:22. Posts 1335

Agree that he stole Rd 2 tho. Expected the judges to give Rd 2 and the fight to Corey. Coz judging on takedowns that do no damage is still kinda ambiguous. Was hopeful tho and then thoughts turned to that I'm glad it was in Brazil

Boom Stipe. Way too much happy face. Little too much self belief in his recent results to be charging into a taller, bigger guy like that

No such thing as a healthy Cain until he proves it over the course of multiple fights. And time is running out fast as he's on the wrong side of 30

Ended barely up on the event which I'll more than gladly take since I came in to the event with Font and Cummins

Since Werdum got knocked the fuck out, I ended up losing money on DraftKings tonight. I would've at least profited a little if Werdum won.

Invested $80, won about $54, total loss is -$26. The surprises on the card were Nogueira R1, Barberena racking up so many points, and Stipe R1.

I mean, I always expect to do bad on PPV cards, so this is nothing new. One of these days I'll run as good as I do on the smaller events and cash big.

The next UFC card is in 2 weeks from now, so that's nice.

Are you profitable on DraftKings so far? Is DraftKings easier than betting straight up? That's actually a really good question, pros and cons of Draftkings format vs regular format. Anyone have good information?

Yes, I'm profitable on DK.

Is DK easy? No.

Is DK easier than betting straight up on bookies? No.

If 1 of your 5 fighters gets finished in Round 1 of a fight, that team is usually going to lose. For example, Pat Cummins got knocked out early on this UFC card, which meant that all of the teams I had with Cummins would not return any money. Also, once a UFC card starts, all teams are locked, so you just hope for the best; you can't buy your way out of any of your teams if one of your fighters loses early.

The card was great for me. Started bad as Cummins sucked dick, then Lineker, Lineker dec and Maia by sub, had me going for a huge night, before the fucking Shogun - Anderson fight.

The most annoying part was that I could of hedged Shogun at +170 lb at the end of R3, hesitated and paid the price. Got tilted and went huge on Cyborg R1 ( in hindsight that -160 was a gift, should have been -1000). Got lucky there and Stipe winning was cherry on top.

Stipe vs Reem should be great. And Cyborg is a savage. Her vs Tate/RR/Holm would be cool. Don't know if any of them will step up to fight her, though. Does not seem like a smart idea. Holly probably will fare the best from the 3 of them. Ronda and MIesha are getting melted.

Baalim   Mexico. May 15 2016 12:54. Posts 34250

Ronda wouldnt be an easy match up, Cyborg is sloppy and she is extremely easy to clinch.

Miesha Tate would be a very easy fight though, her striking is atrocious, no technique nor power to threaten Cyborg she can unload at will, I guess she could be a punching bag and gas Cyborg but its usually not a good plan to try to get punched in the face until the opponent gets tired lol

Werdum had a great run. It had to come to an end some time. He clearly isn't the kind of fighter that looks like will dominate a division. It was great while it lasted, I was pleased with it. Hopefully he can bounce back and show us some good fights again. Now looking forward to seeing Overeem face off against Miocic later this year, it's going to be awesome. Now I'm okay with a rematch between Werdum and Velasquez :D
About the fight, that's a mistake Werdum repeats in every fight, but yesterday it was much more evident because he was literally running/chasing Miocic. I just hope he doesn't become supercautious because of it in his next fights.

Jacare was great but Vitor was so weird. I think he threw like 0 punches yesterday. Jacare really made it look easy. I was also very happy for Cyborg. It was a great showing. It's a shame she's not willing to drop some more kg to fight at the 135 div but I understand it. She looked like death on the weigh ins, kinda reminded me of McG's death-like appearance in his weigh ins.

Werdum looked fatter and slower than usual, got desperate once he realized he'd get outpointed if they fought on the outside.

I'm glad Miocic is champ and I plan on starting up on the betz0rs again soon, if so I'll be laying money on him vs Reem so long as the odds aren't too wide.

Reem can't fight at a decent pace with Miocic for more than a round if that, he'll have quite literally a punchers chance since Miocic is plenty athletic and nimble enough to stay out of the clinch with him.

That was up their with Weidmans spinning back kick in terms of complete wtf brain farts. My guess is he saw Struve do it to Stipe and KO him, but Struve had Stipe hurt, on top of the fact that he slipped on the octagon right before Struve nailed him. Plus even Struve wasn't that wild.

I'm glad Shogun got the win, but lots of people scored that 2nd round for Anderson and Shogun was clearly pretty gassed. So looked like it was 1-1 going into the 3rd with a gassed Shogun.

Yah you knew they were going to give it to Shogun though with the crowd and what-not. I'm shocked it was +170 livebetting. I would have been legit surprised if Anderson got the nod there. I mean, given how close round 2 was and then him getting semi-dropped at the end there, I'm fairly impressed even 1 judge had it for Anderson.

I dont think it was a planned strategy trying to copy Struve I think it was the idiotic chute-boxe bravado and he lost sight of the real difference in the level of striking, he was fighting fine up to that point, he was kicking at will eating some punches as expected, the fight wasnt going in Stipes favor it was totally unnecessary.

On the bright side the HW division is finally very fun again and we are out of the Cain champ and Cigano titlefight gatekeeper stalemate

Shogun was at +odds at livebetting for most of the fight. He was a favorite only after the 1st round and also after dropping Corey in the 2nd. Other than that he was going between the +120/+170 range.

Looking at it back it was a mistake not to hedge and cash a small profit given the opportunity and seeing how the fight was unfolding. I was a little swayed though by the Alves - Barbarena fight, where I thought it was a very close fight and the judges in Brasil will for sure give the nod to Alves. All 3 gave it unanimously for Barbarena and looking at all the other fights I thought that judging was fine and there was no bias for brazilian fighters.

Stipe - Reem is a 50/50 fight, imo. Miocic striking defence is not very good and Overeem can crack him a lot of different things. If Alistair can avoid the takedowns, which I think he can, He has a pretty good shot at laying Stipe out.

Reem will need to get on the inside. He won't do well on the outside with the style he used against JDS and Arlovski because Stipe is the much better boxer, wrestler, throws a lot more strikes, has the better chin, and has better foot movement.

I really want Reem to win, though.

Edit: Reem has the much better kicks, but he can only throw so many of them before he'll get tired. Greg Jackson will hopefully have another good game plan for him.

I wonder how much they pay Greg Jackson, every fighter that trains with him for a longer period of time becomes such a beast, actually feels like JBJ is the one that has least progress

Don't agree with the first part. Reem getting on the inside and exchanging with Stipe is recipe for getting knocked out. He needs to stay on the outside pick his shots and when in close range clinch. His clinch is brutal. Very fun match up. I just hope they don't give the title shot to Cain if he beats Browne up.

Stipe wasnt staggered actually he connected an identical right hook about 4 seconds before the KO that stunned Werdum, but he kept chasing like an idiot and got hit exactly in the same way

I think pressure brawlers like Rothwell or pot shotters like JDS are more dangerous to Reem than Stipe's technical style, Id like a bet on Reem on anything over -130
