finally?
After 13 years of test and developing, Indonesia is about to start mass producing a male birth control pill that has success rate of 99.96%. That's even better then female pills I think?
| Imagine, for a moment, a world where men can just take a pill and suddenly they, and their sexual partners, don’t have to worry about pregnancy.
Whatever you imagine that world to be like, it could become a reality as soon as next year.
Indonesia is preparing to produce a pill, nearly thirty years in the making, that will allow men - temporarily and without any apparent side effects - to produce sperm that cannot get women pregnant.
The pill is derived from the Justicia gendarussa, which is pervasive in India but also Indonesia’s Papua province, where it has been long been used by male members of a small remote tribe to prevent pregnancy.
After learning about that practice, a research scientist at Surabaya’s Airlangga University, Professor Bambang Prajogo Eko Wardojo, brought the plant to his lab in 1985. He and his colleagues have spent years confirming its effect, isolating its active ingredient and synthesizing it chemically into capsule form.
Human trials of the gendarussa pill have been highly successful, with results showing it effective at a rate comparable to female birth control pills. Testing has also shown that male fertility rates return to normal just 3 days after the subjects stopped taking the pills.
The Indonesian government has invested a good sum of money into the pill’s research and testing, specifically through the country’s National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN). In 2013, Airlangga began working with the country’s state-run pharmaceutical company, Indofarma, to begin work on mass-producing the drug, as well as securing the necessary production and distribution licenses. Indofarma later announced that it would be ready to begin production and export of the drug in 2014.
Obviously some delays have prevented the pill from hitting the market just yet - but it’s coming very soon. During a talk at Sunan Giri University in Surabaya last Saturday, the new Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Dr. M. Nasir, spoke about how the government was committed to utilizing the research done by Indonesian universities by connecting them to appropriate companies.
Specifically, Nasir mentioned the male birth control pill from Airlangga University as one example of research that would be produced domestically and massively commercialized in the near future. Pharmaceutical companies in China and the United States have also shown strong interest in obtaining the rights to produce the drug in their countries.
It may take many years of additional testing before it could reach consumers in America. However, the gendarussa pill is likely to be classified as herbal medicine in Indonesia. That mean so although it would not require the same level of scrutiny as regular pharmaceuticals to go to market here (although it would still have to meet the safety standards of Indonesia’s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) and Health Ministry). As much of the testing on the pill has already been completed, there is little preventing it from becoming available to Indonesians consumers sometime next year. |

Yeah, I wouldn't be trying this. Too paranoid that 15 years down the road there'll be a huge explosion in some cancer or something.
However, I'm very curious what kind of impact an easily available male birth control method would have on birth rates if any. |

Yes, please one time.
I think it can only improve birth control, because now it would not be just up to the woman, but to both individuals. Harder for both of them to "forget" to take his/her pill. |

It feels weird to call it "male birth control". I know we are in the habbit of using "birth control" as a term for all contraception but afaik all contraception is female or neutral orientated. Males don't give birth and this isn't a neutral or female form of contraception. As such, the name doesn't make sense IMO as only the female fully controls the birth. |

I remember reading about male contraception pills that were being developed in Japan (I think it was there anyway) about 3-4 years ago. Something about it destroying the sperms tail or something along those lines. It seemed really hyped up, but it was the last I ever heard of it. I assume that if it was even 1/10th as successful as they thought it was gonna be, that we all would have heard of it.
But really.. birth control for guys... that would be incredible. |

Imo, that's a neutral form of contraception/protection worn by men. Males don't give birth.. to say that condoms are birth control is to look at it through a female and/or marketing perspective. Even by taking this pill men don't suddenly gain the power to decide if a woman should abort in the case of a pregnancy. She is ultimately in control thus most birth control methods are female or neutral as you don't gain that power of ultimately deciding what to do in the case of a pregnancy. That's just the way I see it anyway. |

i think the nomenclature is easy to understand, it's called male birth control because only the male takes it |

would male birth control cause the rate of rape to increase? after all, we need to consider one of the things that prevents a man from raping a woman: the consequence of having children. this pill would get rid of one of the barriers that protects women. every single pervert would immediately rush to get this pill and then start planning out rapes, and some will not be able to contain themselves and will start raping the living thing they see, even if it's themselves. we need to quit waging war against women and start protecting them. being an advocate for male birth control makes you a racist misogynist and you should be put in jail for triggering anxiety and fear in women and contributing to the necessity that they carry pepper spray with them. THIS IS THE YEAR 2014, HOW THE FUCK DOES SEXISM STILL EXIST?

Rapist don't think logically. But if a rapist was really scared of getting his victim pregnant he could use a condom or something.
I did a search about this news and it seems real, however you can't expect this to be on US markets before at least 10 years for a bunch of reasons. |

men aren't the ones that run the risk of pregnancy due to sex. men are not going to be as willing to risk their health to prevent prevent pregnancy in another (BC is usually terrible for chicks especially the pill, my last girl had such bad side affects from everything from the pill to mirena). Thats not to say this pill wouldn't be successful though of course it would be. Doubt i'd take it though - i'd just make my girl take it. If it was a one nighter or something along those lines I would be wearing a rubber anyways for other reasons. And if I wasn't wearing a rubber I probably just wouldn't worry about it (drunk/she wouldn't be able to find me if she tried) |
