On the game topic, just how many people do you think would be out there killing people left and right if it weren't for games? Remember, now, that millions upon millions upon millions of people play games, and because the rate of psychos per 100 people have dramatically risen thanks to.... uhm... GAMES!!!!

I have tons of perfectly well-adjusted friends who love to play GTA and other "ultra-violent" games, but I doubt if any of the them will want to play this particular title.

A game like GTA V provides entertainment through varied and engaging means in a rich, well-developed environment. Same goes for FPS games like CS:GO. They're violent, sure, but the violence just a significant part in a complex entertainment mechanism. On the other hand, this game seeks to entertain only through pure, unadulterated violence---plot, character development, or strategy be damned. The game limits itself to a one-dimensional focus that places violence, the scourge of human progress, on a pedestal.

I can't possibly fathom how any good might come out of this. What an utter piece of shit.

Or maybe we're all just getting massively trolled by the developers.

What? I think people who play it will get bored pretty fast or only play short sessions but video game violence is entertaining to a lot of people. Nothing wrong with it soccer moms of america and no, I'm not planning on a mass shooting anytime soon. I think the holes in the character make him pretty hilarious, listen to the start again, he's so over the top. Agree on the unbalanced 1 sided jacket loadout in the trailer due to his unwillingness to lay down his gun for 3 seconds for fear of looking less badass. The screams when they die and the cop calling for backup against 1 guy inside a police station make me laugh . Maybe that's just my dark sense of humour though

yeah but they are fictional. for instance you would never be up in arms about the portrayal of protoss in blizzard games because protoss are fictional. well you might say there's no real life analogue for protoss since they're aliens, but GTA cops are an invention too, the cities in GTA aren't real, they aren't real police departments. i mean i guess the characters are human, but so are the people in skyrim right? i never played that game but of course it wouldn't make sense to say it disrespects, say, people who go to renaissance fairs. is there something special about police? because what about the army, do the games in the call of duty series (how many are there 6? didn't play those either), do those games disrespect the army?

i don't think some kids playing a video game that an organization controlled by the video game industry rated as adult only is a big deal, did you watch porn before you were 18, did you watch R movies (which by the way ESRB game ratings are more stringent than movie ratings), or is there some unproven secret quality of games because they are interactive that it's somehow worse than other stuff like porn

i notice this stuff happens with feminists also, they can get upset about the portrayal of female characters in video games, although they're only fictional characters so they don't need anybody looking out for their rights. if respect is an issue i would focus first on the police's respect for the citizens they serve, and i would focus last if ever on what kind of art people are making

What does respecting cops have to do with their portrayal in games (most cops in my experience don't deserve respect anyways- see a couple threads down the civil forfeitures). You really think entertainment needs to be highly concerned with having respectful subject matter and character representations?

This game will sell some copies but won't do great is my guess. Do any of you remember the game ROCKSTAR came out with after GTA that was supposed to be even more hardcore. All you did in this game was go rampaging and point earning by massacring crowds in a mall? I think my friends and I had fun with it for about 15 minutes, played it maybe twice, then popped GTA back in. Seems like this hatred game is a clone except just a little darker with the whole school shooting / trenchcoated loser vibe.

Here you are saying this, yet the mass media blasts literally tons of news about murders, deaths, suicides and all kind of negative bullshit on a daily basis. If society has to start changing, then games are the last place to start. I do agree on some level with you, but still...

traxamillion   United States. Oct 22 2014 14:47. Posts 10468

Minsk you think things should not exist just because they don't benefit society or might harm it (debatable that any game no matter the content can even do that)? How do you feel about alcohol, porn, gambling, poker. Freedom is more important than society itself. People should be able to do whatever they like as long as it does not negatively affect others or the environment.

Fear mongering nonsense. No benefit? There's a market for gaming and if this is to someones tastes then they'll enjoy it and hopefully have some fun for 30mins. That's the primary intended benefit right there: fun/enjoyment. If anything, people are being given an opportunity to evaluate how they feel about this ridiculous flawed character killing innocent people for no reason. It could prevent exactly the kind of potentially harmful "ideas" depicted in the game from being acted upon. I think people in this thread are terrified someone is going to play this game and just decide "fuck it, this is it" and pick up their dads rifle and go nuts. Or that the game somehow corrupts society. Complete fear driven BS.

Yeah, society does but that doesn't mean they are right to do so. I think societies perceptions on a ton of things are absolutely mislead or wrong. In a lot of cases things are banned out of irrational fear or fear is instilled into the population via media and an intentional lack of information. That can then either put overwhelming pressure on the government to act or it might be the governments own agenda to ban whatever it is, e.g: guns, knives, gambling, porn, alcohol, high power cars, etc. An actual objective evaluation never happens or isn't heard because people are easily manipulated into following other's ideals and interests through fear or ignorance and trusting media.

Yeah, don't make decisions based on fear otherwise you are another cattle in societies heard. Here's the problem with the fearful society you keep talking about:

1. Something bad happens to someone using something safe but offensive or perceived dangerous to some people
2. Those people then try to use whatever happened against the thing they find offensive to get it banned
3. If you don't stand up and protect your freedom to use it, eat it, view it or w/e then it may get banned
4. Laws can be passed and easily if a lot of people are fearful, close minded or don't use it and it's viewed as being simply not worth their trouble.
5. Over time you slowly lose your freedom to enjoy or do anything perceived dangerous, risky, etc.

Yes, guns are dangerous. Cars are dangerous. Alcohol is dangerous. People are dangerous. Lots of things are dangerous but they can still be enjoyed and used safely through training and knowledge. Video games aren't dangerous but even if they were, the tiny micro % that they might be dangerous to doesn't mean they can't be enjoyed by everyone else.

The game just looks shitty and like it has a shit plot. It looks like they are going for pure shock value and are going to try and pretend like they are making some sort of grand statement against censorship when really its just a lack of creativity and a game based on the drek of our society.

I find the idea of the game putrid but am not stupid enough to think it should be censored. Freedom comes with costs, and sometimes those costs are people thinking they are 'breaking the mold' when they are really just putting out tacky non-sense with no upside and only downside.
