Hey, I'm a bit late to the party.

I've just read some of the Ender books for the first time last year. I also kinda wondered how the hell I didn't read it earlier ! Ender's game was amazing. And after reading Speaker for the Dead, it felt like the amazing book was just an elaborate setup for an even more amazing sequel (apparently that opinion isn't shared by everyone in this thread). I read Xenocide, though didn't like it as much, it felt weaker, so I stopped the main series there.

As others have done, however, I recommend you check out the "shadow" series. Ender's shadow, and Shadow of the hegemon at least. The first one follows Bean, and happens at the same time in battle school.

As for other books, check out the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It's comic sci-fi. It's come out in a lot of different formats including a series of 5 novels.

In a completely different style, I love Milan Kundera's novels. Not sure how well they're translated though.

Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.

updating my reading list for the year

read:
hunger games trilogy
ready player one
enders quarter (enders game, speaker for the dead, xenocide, children of the mind)
shadow series (enders shadow, shadow of the hegemon, shadow puppets, shadow of the giant)

got about 20-30% into fooled by randomness and got bored. kinda basic way of thinking for a poker player, maybe i should finish later.
got about 20-30% into a universe from nothing and its just a more in depth physics explanation version of his talks. didnt feel the need to continue.

currently reading:
slaughterhouse five by vonnegut. only about 5% in but its wild, love his writing style.

not sure whats next, but after rereading a bunch of posts in the thread, im leaning towards something by dostoyevsky. will probably be a radical shift from vonnegut, but id like to be destroyed

Dostoevsky is amazing

for Dostoevsky i would start with his novellas, which you can read in one sitting.

Notes from underground
white nights.
The dream of a ridiculous man

Here's a good short excerpt from crime and punishment.
