The long going case is finally over. Judge Noel Hillman on Thursday ordered Phil Ivey and Cheng Yun Lin to repay the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City $10.1m in damages over the ‘edge sorting’ Baccarat case that began more than four years ago.

Effectively, the Judge decided to turn back time and make the Borgata cashiers exactly as it was before Ivey walked in. That means all of the money Ivey won playing Baccarat, as well as $504,000 Ivey won playing Craps with his winnings, will be returned.

The Borgata wanted $15m+ thinking this was the likely true cost of his visits as he would have lost this much had he not used ‘edge sorting’ techniques. The judge ruled that this line of thinking was too speculative for him to take seriously. He also spared Ivey and his buddy from repaying $249,199, which was accounted as a cost of room service and other things provided.

If you don't know what happened, here is a short summary:
In 2012 Ivey asked Borgata to give him access to a high-stakes Baccarat game, including a private gaming area, a dealer who spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese, a permission to have his friend with him (Cheng Yin Sun), an automatic card shuffler, and an eight-deck shoe of purple Gemaco playing cards as the last condition. Borgata accepted his conditions and decided he could bet maximum $50,000 per hand - Ivey happily deposited $1mln.
Ivey then proceeded to completely destroy the casino, winning ~$9,600,000, by using a flaw in the decks casino used - decks were slightly miss-cut, allowing him to gain knowledge of when the key cards are going to hit the table.

As well as $504,000 Ivey won playing Craps with his winnings? You've got to be kidding me.

This is pretty fucked.

if poker is dangerous to them i would rank sports betting as a Kodiak grizzly bear who smells blood after you just threw a javelin into his cub - RaiNKhAN

i thought he can still appeal

I have learned from poker that being at the table is not a grind, the grind is living and poker is how I pass the time

As stated more succinctly by Ivey’s lawyer, “What this ruling says is a player is prohibited from combining his skill and intellect and visual acuity to beat the casino at its own game.” He added that the case will be appealed.
