This has to be a good time in life for that man - John Juanda just recently won the first main tournament of new European Poker Tour season, claiming EPT Barcelona title for €1,022,593, and now he's also in the best physical form of his life. And all that while also making some extra cash from a prop-bet!
Juanda went missing from poker life for almost a full year, and he explained recently why that happend: "The reason I haven't been playing many tournaments is because, I think in December of last year during a Christmas party, me and my buddy, maybe we had a little too much to drink, ended up making a bunch of crazy side bets on a bunch of things like running, doing pull-ups," Juanda explained. "He bet me I couldn't do 20 pull-ups in six months … maybe it was a bad bet on my part, I could do six at the time."
After two months there was no progress, I didn't do anything. I decided, you know what, I'm either going to give up or go all out, so I said, 'You want to press the bet?' Then we ended up betting bigger, and now I really have to train for it.
I was king of out of shape when we made the bet, so it helped me get in shape. We also made some running bets … there was an interesting bet where I run 100 yards and my friend hop on one leg for 50 yards … He said I'll offer this bet to you, but it's a sucker bet, I'm trying to hustle you. But when I thought about it, there's no way he can hop faster than me running."
You can watch Juanda doing more then 20 pulls up here:

1st picture he looks like an average Asian, and above average in terms of average American. If I was a bettor I would include that opponent can't hire a trainer and a personal chef or assistant. In this case it's still a dummy bet betting vs someone who didn't seem that far from out of shape in the first place and who already doesn't have to work for another day in his life. I think most people can attain his amount of progress within 2 months of balanced eating and training assuming no serious health conditions and a basic understanding of fundamental training principles.
Never seen a 50 1-legged dash but I'd be inclined to take that bet, even vs a track and field athlete.
always funny to look at those kind of pictures
1st picture: relaxed
2nd picture: tensed muscles and probably just after workout (as you can see his veins)
<i have achieved so much> lol

the real question is would it be possible for a relatively fat person like mike the mouth to pull this off if he had a personal trainer and dieted for 6months?

6 months ? Just, no. You can perfectly lose a lot of weight but your tissues would make drastic changes that instead of thickening it, it will be loosening (spelling ?). Not the kind of shape you'd get right ?...

Indeed. Also a classic is to position yourself closer to the came in the "after" photo so it looks like you have gotten bigger (or maybe his workout also made his head bigger).

And the light is coming from above in the 2nd pic but from the side in the first, no?
Anyway, still think he did a good job, even with all these nitpicks, he definitely achieved something.

He clearly thinks otherwise or he would have made an honest photo.
Pretty sick i can't do 20 pull ups in 1 go and I've been regularly going to the gym for 4 months at 150lbs now
Well I will probably be able to do them they way he did with all those pauses but thats just lol
He should've bet him he couldn't hold the pull ups crowbar for 2 minutes that d be an easy win :D

Oh yeah that's perfectly doable. Just do pull up for every lose in starcraft. I'd been doing that for like two month and went from 5-10 pull up with 2 hands to 5 pull up with one hand (obviously 20+ with two hands if you're wondering)

literally all before --> after-type pics are like this, i don't see the big deal tbh. the bet was about pull-ups anyway, not how he looks in some photo (not saying the bet wasn't a hustle, but who cares about whether he's exaggerating his progress in the after photo).

pullups are hard as fk if u dont practice them exclusively. theres a lot of fit guys that would struggle with pullups. and there are a lot of "fit" but not that strong guys that can rep them out. takes a kind of specific training to be able to blast them out.
I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance, by running away from the scene of an accident.

Regularly going in and out of a room which may or may not have weightlifting equipment doesn't guarantee any physical gains. I've read that you have to actually put in the effort before starting to see results.

True though Doomer, but it would feel kind of inefficient, since im training every muscle group isolated w/o hands cuz they were progressing too fast, so I get to do pull ups only @ back day meaning i do pull ups once or twice a week
I remember i used to do 4x20 chin ups w/o a problem when i was training outside a few years back but then again chin ups are 3x easier than pull ups

I can't do that anymore. It was like 5 years ago. And trust me, when you play 50 games a day, you get a lot of loses thus a lot of pull-ups. Since then, I gained like 10-12 kgs (roughly 25 lbs I think ?) and I can hardly do 5 pull up straight. I can't even do 1 pull-up with one hand anymore lol.
But seriously, it's not that hard when you do it regularly. Just buy a pull-up bar, and do a set everytime you lose at something, or everytime you see an insult in LoL or whatever excuse you can come up with. It helps stop smoking aswell.
Oh and don't forget to drink water.
I may be able to do something like this if there is any intencive, because right now I'm feeling so fucking lazy and i'm feeling depressed right now. I'm trying to work my belly first but it's so fucking hard...
Would be fun to do a prop bet, but I've never done that. Not sure how it would work.

you want to lose weight?
Wake up at 6 am and work out. Don't eat candy or chips, only veggies/fruit/meat. Don't drink soda. No caffeine after noon. No food after 8 pm...
ready? go

if poker is dangerous to them i would rank sports betting as a Kodiak grizzly bear who smells blood after you just threw a javelin into his cub - RaiNKhAN

Doesn't need to be anywhere near that extreme
It sorta does if you want to make a permanent change, especially if you're very overweight (i.e. lost) go for it hard and learn.

i don't think it's extreme at all, but the 'no food after 8 pm' part is just wrong, it's one of those misconceptions people had 10 years ago that has no basis in reality. in fact a lot of people report the best results eating the majority of their calories just before going to bed, and not eating much for breakfast/lunch.

I thought it was more about intermittent fasting being extremely effective for men rather than eating times. Surely it's better to eat at morning and abstain at night for functional purposes.

ye but willpower acts much like a muscle in practice. making it a sustainable habit is the only way to keep the weight off. If done outside sustainability its pointless even if it does work. because eventually it those people will revert back to whatever their habits truly are. Crash diets are definitely the enemy imo.

Well, those are fairly sustainable habbits, at the very least a good default framework to start with and people saying it doesn't have to be that extreme don't understand that half assed attitude encourages apathy which makes it so easy for fat people to just give up. Afaik, nobody is saying you have to majorly go under your calorie needs i.e. starve, in fact that's terrible, add in some good carbs like oats/sweet potatoes even rice/potatoes and quality healthy fats + diverse protein. The major first step is to get them eating the right foods, let them eat a lot and really get into it. Monitor the weight, calculate their BMR to work out how many calories they should eat per day then start undercutting based on activity level/goals.
