LCD, LED, Plasma ???

I have had this old school CRT 26" widescreen TV for years now. Its done me proud. But I think its time to get a new TV. One reason that spurred this was playing game on Xbox360 and realizing how crappy the resolution is on it, that I have to sit really close to read text and stuff because its not very crisp.

So with that being said I started doing some research, and hmmm seems to be alot of different views on each of the TVs on the market at the moment. Its pretty confusing!

Some important points for deciding TV;

- I like playing racing games and fast paced games on my Xbox360 - I have read on some sites that LCD is bad for this, and plasma is hands down better. Others say LED is similar to LCD and you still get picture lag?

- It does not have to be huge. I could live with 32", 42" would be amazing.

- Price range - Probably do not want to spend much more than 500 pound sterling, but anything less than that would be good.

- Needs to have a stereo mini jack audio output. Will still use onboard speakers though

- Would like it to have 1080p, afaik xbox only uses 720 ? But for future If i change to PS3 or something, I want to have the 1080p there.

What sort of specs should I be looking for? Refresh rates, colour ratio thing, resolutions etc? Regarding LED, I read that many are just backlit LED and are really no difference to LCD except use less energy. The full LED ones, I cannot seem to find these. I presume they are super expensive?

If you know any models or personal experiences with of these 3 types, please do reply

oh and I am in the UK, so buying in UK only.

he can't go for LED with a budget of 500pounds, that will be one shitty LED.

If you have much money the best TVs you can buy are LEDs, buf if you buy a cheap LED its picture will be worse than a normal Plasma/LCD, so i guess go for a good Plasma in your case. It should have Full-HD (1080p).

A similar LCD - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product...3/3|cat_14419667|LCD+TVs|24282204.htm

Regarding plasmas, having difficulty finding one within my budget that has Full HD. All the Full HD ones seem to be like 50", which is just too big. This one is best I can find so far but its out of stock at the moment; http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product...|cat_14419667|Plasma+TVs|14419686.htm

Any UK users recommend where to buy TVs online or in shops?

ugh i don't know about buying in the UK, but I got a 32" 1080p LED TV for my ps3 in my dorm room for $298 at costco. The brand is Westinghouse. I'm really really happy with it though. It's got great picture quality. I was very upset with the sound though. It's pretty much got 2 cell phone speakers in the tv :/ However, for $60, I bought logitech 2.1 speakers that have a speaker in the front and in the back for 360* sound. It sounds GREAT now. So roughly $350 usd, and I'm very very pleased. Well worth it imho.

Hmm, have not come across that Brand here in the UK sadly. Seem to be US only.

So I been doing alot of research lately, and stumbled upon this. The future of TVs.

Seriously wow. its still a long way from being affordable at the moment, but this shit is sick.

Still have no real idea what to get. Gonna check out some stores tomorrow and have a good old look around.

Well, all the new models are coming on in the next few months starting April. So anything you buy you should get a good marked down price or tell them to give you a discount.

It really sounds like you just need a nice small TV, so mostly any of the top brands will be fine for you, you do not need 1080p basically ever on anything under 50" but if you must, then only get it if the TV you buy is the 42", anything smaller and you are wasting money on that upgrade or are in a very confined space I guess. BUT since you said the whole point was to not have to be close than 720p is all you could ever want.

Gaming wise, well you should look around it varies a lot from brand and model. Just make sure you buy from a place that you can easily return if you don't like the TV and how it games. Basically anything that fits your budget and is a decent brand like Panasonic, samsung, LG, vizio (good and cheap) should be fine. If your room has a lot of glare, windows/lights, LG or vizio are probably the worst for reflections.

Well after some thorough research, I went for the Samsung LE40C580 - http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-le40c580-le32c580-20100728791.htm

I got it delivered other day, and all I can say is wow. Amazing! Really impressed with the quality, I was not expecting it to be this good lol. Playing games on my xbox360 is like a whole other world now at 1080p ! I got a really good deal on Amazon (£399) , as this model is going to be replaced by with some other similar newer model very shortly.

If you are looking for a TV in this price range, I highly recommend !

Oh and I didint got for LED in the end because all the so called LED TVs in this price range are Edge LED, which offer no benefit over LCD other than being slimmer, and as I am not wall hanging it, theres no need to spend extra hundreds for looks ! All the full back lit LED TVs are stupid expensive at the moment, and besides within 4-5 years I am sure OLED will be more affordable, so If i upgrade then, I hopefully can go for an OLED TV
