I need someone to help me speed up my computer. I've done all the standard things... what i think is damaging the performance is the excessive start up programs. I disabled the ones I thought i didn't need and couldn't even connect to the internet. Going one by one and doing it would take forever..

since that might not be the only problem i need some computer guy who's well rounded. I also need someone who i can trust. I'm not that idiotic when it comes to PCs but I don't want someone trying to squeeze a free lesson who knows only as much as i do.

1. Is your hard drive really full? usually you want at least 20% free space.

2. Scan for virus's/spyware

3. Type msconfig (to bring up the system configuration) in the search function go to start up and uncheck everything/whatever u don't want.

4. Buy more ram/a solid state hard drive.

5. Buy a new computer?

I use a mac, but isn't there program cleaner (was it called ccleaner?) that cleans out useless programs?
Have you formatted your harddrive? Have you formatted partitions?
What OS are you using?

You can normally uncheck everything without having problems.
With netbooks, a lot of shitty programs come with the computer.
How do you normally connect to internet ? maybe you use some kind of software which comes with your computer to connect to wifi. And the windows one is disabled.

sorry for shitty english.

I always cry crocodile tears when someone suggests empty space on harddrive.

Having a full harddrive in itself doesn't matter. It only makes defragation a slightly bigger problem.

IF harddrive space had any impact whatsoever I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to type this.

on top of that if you use ntfs you don't even need to defrag

You can download UniBlue which includes a registry cleaner, a program that speeds up your computer by freeing up ram (amongst other things) and they also do anti virus.

Give it a try yo

instead of figuring out which ones to uncheck, just uncheck all and go from there. most of the shit is useless anyways

Its time to stop thinking like a bitch and think smart like a poker player - ket

How do you want to do this? You want someone to just list a bunch of stuff to try via PM? Or you want to initiate a remote help session via skype or whatever? I routinely unfuck computers throughout the week. But truth be told, if your computer is heinously corrupt, tweaking will only do so much. A good ole fashioned format is often recommended for systems which have been neglected for too long.

Hit me up and I'll take a look.

bye now

Don't want the lesson (I play at $0.02/$0.05 the lesson should go to somebody that has less really basic stuff to learn still and can really benefit), but unfucking computers is my day job, so feel free to send me a PM. We'll do teamviewer or something like that and I'll take a look with you.

What? Hard drive transfer speeds and seek times increase the fuller a drive is. While I don't think this is the issue here if you are transferring, working with large files, databases etc then you will notice it.

Also if you un-check everything under msconfig/startup then be aware you may not have certain things like anti-virus or a firewall on startup so don't forget to put them back on once you have found out if its something loading at startup that is killing your system.

You don't actually state where you need to speed up your computer. Is it slow to boot, slow to shut down, games run slow, pt3/hem databases take ages to access etc. Where/how is it slow?

I've been on less than 1mb free space numerous times.

No slowdowns. Maybe my computer is made of magic?

edit: currently ~2gb out of 5,5tb. if that's 'full enough' for your so called slowdowns based on empty space

edit: when you got too little ram and a huge swap file then I might see the problem...
edit: But are those even used nowadays? Stupid technology moving fast.

you can safely go into msconfig and unclick everyhing in startup, it should still have internet

Its hard to make a easy buck legally, its impossible to make a easy buck morally.

Your computer can use virtual memory, by using a part of your hardrive as if it were ram. If you use too many programs for example, and ram is full, your computer will copy data on your hardrive.
But copying data on your harddrive is much solwer than with the ram.

sorry for shitty english.

just google all of your startup processes and find out which ones you don't need and uncheck them
