Your computer can use virtual memory, by using a part of your hardrive as if it were ram. If you use too many programs for example, and ram is full, your computer will copy data on your hardrive.
But copying data on your harddrive is much solwer than with the ram.

No slowdowns. Maybe my computer is made of magic?

edit: currently ~2gb out of 5,5tb. if that's 'full enough' for your so called slowdowns based on empty space

edit: when you got too little ram and a huge swap file then I might see the problem...
edit: But are those even used nowadays? Stupid technology moving fast.

Swap space ("page file" in windows) is definitely still useful nowadays. Unused memory should be paged out to make space for intensively used memory.

How do you measure that you have no slowdowns? Microsoft's NTFS filesystem is notorious for its fragmentation, and the fuller you put the drive the worse it will perform. This does not necessarily mean that your computer slows down to a crawl, but it can be a contributing factor.

Of course there is no hardware reason for the slowdown and many Linux filesystems perform fine even with a full drive.
