So I managed to win 6k in October and 3k in November while writing up and submitting my chemistry thesis.

Even though 2 months and 100k hands aren't a lot, at times I can't help wonder -- can I make a living playing full time? I mean, I only stand to win more when I get better, learn to become more disciplined, and move up.

Barring a disaster I should successfully wrap up my oral defense in early January. And I have already applied for a post-doctoral position in Hong Kong starting March.

Chemistry isn't bad. Academics. Education. But these jobs all come with the pressure to perform.

Why bother with a real job when I can do something that appears easier, more lucrative and more fun?

But at the same time, my parents are going to kill me if they hear I am becoming a professional gambler. Especially when a close friend of theirs wrecked her family/life after losing tens of thousands playing sucker casino games in Macau.

Hmm

Im pretty much in the same situation, but I'd rather go on studying even if that pisses me off than hurting my parents, even tho I'm living on poker atm I unfortunately can't quit studying :/
But yeah, that is sooo ez to make a decent living from poker. And as another thread pointed out, "normal jobs" pay shit.

Yea, another good point. My post-doc research job only pays me about 2k per month. Less than what I get playing part-time pokah

I think that if you can easily make a living of poker. You should keep doing it on the side of your studies until you finish. That way you now have a degree to fall back on, when you get tired of playing poker. And if your not that keen on working with whatever your degree is, you can find some job you acctually LIKE doing, even tho it might pay kinda shitty. As you can help support yourself with poker on the side, or just play poker for a living for awhile if thats what you want.

Do both.

Poker will lose its appeal and become a chore if it's all you do.

Besides you need a backup plan. Congress could decide to crack down on it one year, or the games could dry up considerably and make it far less profitable.

I droped out university to play poker and i dont play more at all .. i just got nothing to do all fking day
but for some reason im winning a lot more tho .. maybe its cause i dont have to worry about school stuff anymore

imo when u quit school to play poker you gota have another plan in mind to invest your money, so u can have poker + another thing incoming

Not as much, for sure. Against fishies it's like printing money.

You guys have all seen my poorly played hands, I'm not claiming to be a shark, but after running at 5PTBB for 100k hands I would like to believe I am more than just a luckbox

That's actually a very pertinent point. During my really long sessions I usually do not that great. I find it tough to maintain my focus for a 5 or 6 hour stretch as poker became somewhat of a chore, and I eventually start doing retarded things to keep myself entertained. That's something that I seriously have to work on.
