So my gf had a run in with the Swedish health care system and came home crying because the doctor told her that it was probably unnecessary to do anything about her back. Then he left without actually telling my gf that they where done. She been to four different physiotherapists, two different chiropractors and a naprapath, most of them asking why on earth no one has done X-rays on her back since it's obvious something is wrong. The last 1.5 years or so we've spent about 5 or 6k on physiotherapy and stuff like that.

At least at two occasions I've really wanted to hit someone in the face due to their complete lack of giving a damn. That's not to say that everyone's a moron, but it does seem like it's fairly random if you get someone who cares or someone who doesn't.

Today, when she came home crying, I had enough. I googled private health care and found some place that had the correct doctors using the logic that if they actually have to do something to get paid, it'll increase the probability that they'll do something. Some receptionist answers the phone and I tell her about the situation. She starts talking about how it's expensive and whatnot before I interrupt her and tell her that I made my first million SEK when I was 21 (which I'm not sure about, but it's close enough, might've been 20 or 22). Now we've got a doctor's appointment in two days. Private health care rules, should've done this at once and saved some money.

Hopefully it's an issue that's not serious, but if they find out that it's actually is something seriously wrong with her back I'll be tempted to see if I can get something done about the guy who refused to actually check it out. It'd be interesting to find out what a law degree, lots of money and ample spare time can do.

Sorry to hear about your GFs troubles. From my experience so far the swedish healthcare system has a lot of completely pointless referrals, travelling and waiting. Also met a really aggressive doctor who I suspected was using drugs.

the situation is kinda the same in Hungary. If u use public health care get ready for endless waiting lines and uninterested doctors but at least its free. Obviously private health care is the best but its extremely expensive....

Health cares is a joke. In my experience doctors seem to be made up of robotic sociopaths. I think it's a function of how the education system filters people, it rewards those who study all day and have no life and therefore no social skills. Also there are lot of systems in place where a doctor will get paid more to see 30 patients (regardless of results) compared to actually treat 10-15. The world is in a state where quantity is all that matters, quality has dropped a lot

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us and as we let our own lights shine we unconsciously give other people permision to do the same

I think a big part of the problem is them being over-worked and under-staffed. Whatever the reason, it's just not working the way it should be.

Last time it was about something non urgent, wanted a hard bump removed. Took me 2 months to get an appointment, got there, he took 2-3min an then we were done, he said it was just a fat collection and it can easily be removed, which I pretty much knew was wrong. Got a new appointment 1 month later. Came to the next appointment and it took 2-3min and he said other guy was wrong, but it's probably nothing serious and he could schedule me for an X-ray if I wanted to. Got a time for 1 month later, they told me they'd give me the results within 2 weeks after the X-ray, almost 4 weeks later I get the results. Yay for them giving me 0 info, me thinking I might have cancer. End result was them not doing what I asked but instead just telling me it's nothing serious aaand it only took 5 months. Well, thanks.

TLDR; contacted them about removing a bump, given the wrong diagnosis, and after 5 months they tell me it's nothing to worry about.

This, also the system is fucked up. They should either go completely free of government control (except possibly safety regulations) or keep it completely under government control. This half-assed semi-private but paid for by the government crap is just straight retarded.

i was looking up costs of healthcare internationally and found this:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2...us-compares-with-other-countries.html

healthcare in USA, at least where i live, is very expensive. it costs $500 just to be seen and get a throat culture, and will still have to pay for any prescriptions

with costs of healthcare being so high, there is a strong push for socialized healthcare, in the very same vein as the systems used where you live. '

That's weird:

"They are flexible in responding if they think certain costs are exceeding what they budgeted for. In Japan, if spending in a specific area seems to be growing faster than projected, they lower fees for that area. Similarly, in France an organization called CNMATS closely monitors spending across all kinds of services and if they see a particular area is growing faster than they expected (or deem it in the public interest), they can intervene by lowering the price for that service"

I might be stupid but doesn't this imply that the cost of stuff is not actually the total cost but rather what insurances/private entities pays for it?

Also, considering how it's probably a lot easier to get a doctor to do extra stuff (you can just pay for it if you're uncertain) in US compared to most of the other countries it stands to reason that it'd cost more (they'll do more expensive stuff).

i enjoy the private healthcare option - i have no strong opinion for or against. i like that care is available immediately and nearly immediately if i am able and willing to pay for it.

also, you arent stupid, you are genius.

it is just costs relative to income in the US are very high and there is a limited supply of quality care

Sweden has both public and private practices? That's cool. In Canada we only have public. My father had to go to Korea to get his tumor removed because he had to wait months for it to be removed. And you know, better safe than sorry when it comes to health. Although, I think our local hospital went through a reform in the past year or two. My mother had to go to ER last week and everything was upgraded to be more efficient and better. Lines were moving mega fast, the place was less ghastly and old than I remember, staff was very caring and compassionate. Was dope to see tax dollars at work.

Hope everything is okay man.

also dat "i made 1mil SEK when i was 21" to the receptionist was pretty baller haahahhah

I tought welfare state an 40% income taxes was heaven ! (/sarcasm)

+1 on many doctors sucking

GL to your gf. GJ on getting her X-ray, if pain hasn't got better with physiotherapy and 2 years the odds of it being a muscular problem are very slim, unless its some chronic issue from sitting too much or something.

you can take a course at med school that teaches you to empathize with the patient, unfortunately most doctors think the course is a waste of time.

the education system is much worse than that. It is designed to make the world a better place for rich people only. The only reason the education system deems doctor as a legitimate job title is because rich people need doctors and the job doesn't undermine systems of power. Anything that undermines power, like poltical scientist, or philosophy, could threaten the rich and therefore there is very little jobs to be had in that field. And undermining the rich is obviously the only way forward to a civilization that won't self destruct in the next 50 years. (the rich reject scientific theories like gobal warming as well, because it harms their earnings)

You should try to see immigrant doctors in Sweden (any nordic country tbh) if you're using the public healthcare system. Hungary apparently has a very high-quality system of training doctors. They're also really underpaid (again, this is strictly the public health-care system) so they're the #1 target of brain-drain. It's pretty easy to see that our free public healthcare blows ass because only the biggest asshats / retards stay here (barring a few exceptions).

Edit: Forgot to say that best wishes to your gf, hope her back heals. An ongoing problem that started more than a year ago can be bad, but hopefully it's nothing serious.

My favourite line is Bet/Fold. I bet, you fold.Last edit: 13/05/2013 16:13
