| | 9 Tables (+12.65) by KingKory, February 24
February 24, 2009
Summary:
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3513/pb022409.jpg
Commentary:
Well, this session was 100% more entertaining than the last.
I kicked it up to 9 tables, and was able to get into the groove relatively easy - 1,000 hands in an hour. 6bb/100, think I'll stick with this for a while. At this rate, I'll be up to 25NL in the next couple weeks...AT THIS RATE I SAID YOU HEAR ME GOD?!
There was a comment on my last blogpost about the lameness of playing standard. Is it worth building an image at 10NL? I don't think I could do such a thing running 9 tables anyway, so the EV would have to exceed the 300-400 hands I'd be losing an hour. Thanks.
Table Ninja:
Read a bit about Table Ninja - worth the $25? I envision mass chaos while trying to use this 9-tabling: 4-betting at random tables etc. Any reviews would be appreciated.
Poker Tracker 2:
Is this still supported? The version I have (2.16) doesn't work with PokerStars out of the box (I had to write a little utility to nig-rig my hand histories into importable files), is it still supported?
Is there any functionality in PT3 that is MUST HAVE? If not, I'll just stick with my ghetto-budget PT2.

Eh...not super stoked on this hand - comments?
Hands of Note:

I'm just about done with playing AK out of position I think. This seems to happen just about every time.

This guy is a reg. Anyone consider pushing? Have literally tried ZERO plays so far at 10NL.

Find a fold? How often are we jacking this up from SB? I probably raise this ~30% of the time.

“It is very hard, if not impossible,” he wrote in his study, “to justify active management for most individual, taxable investors, if their goal is to grow wealth.” And he said that those who still insist on an actively managed fund are almost certainly “deluding themselves.”

| | Mentality Solution by Yaffie, February 24
Thanks to those of you who responded to my last blog entry - I did listen to that 'tilt' mp3 a couple of times and it was definitely a help. Every time I start a session I now state my intentions to myself - to make the best possible decisions. If I feel like my ability to do this is diminishing, I STOP.
I'm also moving back to nl10... lol at playing with 175 buyins. but i'm going to play until I make back the amount I lost at nl25 before moving back up.

| | Video #2 this time 4 tables! by vlseph, February 24
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=B28C73QJ
So here I am playing 4 tables and the video is about 90 minutes long, I always forget to keep track of time. It's a bad habit. I do talk about everything 4kingell commented on from the last video and I do get into a couple more interesting situations. There are a couple spots where I wasn't sure what to do, and just folded instead.
Anyone who takes their time to watch and comment is greatly appreciated
Next video I will just play Stars to show you how bad I run there.

| | [NL100] week 1 by Uptown, February 23
7 days (6 playing days) of NL100.
I've made some nice adjustments, and I'm learning to really be flexible and fluid during the same session on different tables depending on the villains and hence the needs of the tables. Played about 18/16 today, since the tables were tighter than the fish infested weekend lovefests.
However, I am still making pure donkey plays that can potentially ruin a session. Great example is this hand that made me instantly halt my evening session and just quit for the day. http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/639613
What makes it worse is that as I looked through all the action, it became clear that my river raise is VERY thin at best, and when he shoves over me I am never good. There are simply no hands that get here that I beat anymore. YET I CALL. I HAVE TOP TWO I CAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Seriously, I play 2000 hands and have 3 like this that just eat me alive. It really really really bothers me that sometimes I'm just not making the right decisions when it matters . Learning process... I guess. Overall from the results of the day, it was a great success. But nevertheless, these 2,3,4 problem hands just really irk me.

| | Life-changing Variance by PanoRaMa, February 23
I feel like what I'm about to say has a lot of merit, so please don't just disregard it as another whine/EV post .
I know a lot of you have your own reservations regarding variance, luck, EV programs and shit. From what I'm told, the "All In EV" is the only thing that should be considered as legitimate/accurate, so that's what I'll be using.
Here's my year so far, which isn't the main point of this blog post:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a162/sirasoni/aipfev-1.png
This is over a sample of 90k hands on the year, and this is 95% at 1/2, rest 2/4, so I'm running effectively 25 bi below EV, and it seems like my preflop "strategy" is breakeven.
HOWEVER
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a162/sirasoni/irunsthehot.jpg
This is my friend's graph, who I won't name but plays on Stars, with the stakes being split between 1/2 to 3/6 over a sample of roughly 300k hands. Even if we were to give him the benefit of the doubt and say this is ALL 3/6 (which it isn't), he's running 60 buy ins ABOVE EV with a breakeven preflop "strategy".
Conclusions:
1. The TRUE long-run could be something in the field of millions of hands.
2. In just the field of probability alone, if it is possible (and evidently it is) for someone to run like my friend, it is equally as possible for someone to run the complete opposite.
3. What do we make of players who have done well in the past but not anymore? Is it possible they just ran gloriously?
4. Most importantly, if someone is going to run THIS WELL over the entire course of a year, what do you think that does for his psyche and mentality/perspective approaching this game? It's truly life-changing, not only the money he's able to make (which he shouldn't even be entitled to), but the stress/emotional health factor of poker is substantially lessened. How would you like to be this player?
Just something to think about.

Yes, it continues.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/977cc79bd91186a42b7b45a3c331c03d.jpg
I dropped $300 at like 4 in the morning unfortunately. Noticed I wasn't playing well ($200 was a cooler, I spewed $100 more in a non-tilty-just-bad-play way) and logged off. Because of my droppage I decided to move down and play nl100 for today. Tomorrow, I will play nl100 and table select nl200. If I downswing a couple of buyins I may even drop to nl50 for the day TBH.
This is a pretttttty sick stretch IMO. Definitely running like god. Just happy I'm not spewing too much in between
I started losing focus so I stopped (this is soooo important). I'm going to grind as much as I can focus tomorrow, looking for 2.5k+ hands. Hopefully I won't downswing and I can post a rather nice 20k hand stretch for the luls. Maybe it will even be BBV worthy.. yes, that's right, my true poker dream is to post a bbv worthy graph.
I am $150 away from a 5k month (including bonuses/rb obv). If I finish this month up 5k I will shit my pants, because I didn't expect to do something like that until July.
So I think its time to goto the bar and have a few drinks in celebration of the sickest poker weekend of my life (maybe the sickest weekend of life TBH, tasting monetary success for the first time and all).
I wish I had more useful things to say for you all right now, but I'm basically just awestruck and trying to keep myself grounded mentally while I continue putting in hands. I know a downswing can come EZ so I have to stay focused and disciplined in my approach.

I suck at life and bank roll management. Well I forced my self to move down to NL 25 after having an enormous heater on NL 50 a week ago and then blowing the profits. Let's see if I can do things right - ONE TIME!!!

| | !! #_# !! by Qyvs!, February 23
I don't feel like playing poker at all at this moment.
I was supposed to play around 200 sng's throughout this week 9-man 16$, but since I ran like shit I thought it was a moment to let it go... It's a pretty bad downswing nearly 50 buy-ins. I am not used to such swings since I made my 5K bankroll playing 10$ DoN's ( much less variance ). Since I am not used to it I feel like it might affect my game. I decreased number of tables from 16 to 14 and I am breaking even - yay!
The good things about this swing are the following :
1) I didn't tilt while playing. It might sound stupid but actually I'm proud of myself lol. I mean I screamed 2 or 3 times like loud "FUCK!!!!!!" just to release some negative emotions ( it helps ), but overall I know I was making +EV decisions. It didn't really bother me while I was playing. As I look back couple months ago running bad made me tilt. I was stopping the sessions while having a couple tables and I had to cool off for the whole day. Now, the only thing that makes me tilt is making stupid decisions of my own. Okay... and sometimes I'm mad for some donk who calls my shove with total junk which is -EV for both of us
2) I have some hands to analyze. I ran with SNGwizard, and SNGPowerTools hands I should go over once again. I made printscreens of every hand in which I made a mistake, and I will print all them out and make another folder just to look at it before sleep
3) I am going to focus on university related stuff for this week. It's so weird that I actually need to ran bad in order to focus on other stuff than poker. I mean I need motivation to be real-life focused. What motivates me towards my obligations is having tons of stuff that I should have done already, or that I should really try catching up on. I wish I had some more balance in my life but I think it's always been like that.
4) ( oh wow, there are actually four things that make up for the downswing! ) I need to start playing some other game than NLHE turbo SnG's. I was thinking of depositing some money onto Cake, or Party where I used to play. I don't want to play on PokerStars cause I'd like to separate rolls for my SnG/MTT and cash games. ( any suggestions where should I play taking into account bonuses ? ) I want to play 6-max in order to improve hand reading ( SNGs are such a brainwasher )
5) I turned 700 FTP points where I played for a whole into 20,000 ( so easy, and I ran so hot! ). I got 1-month membership to Stoxpoker for 5000, 2 card decks for live play with my friends and... that's it. Can't get too much! I am exercising my FTP points bankroll.
So...
What are the bad things about the swings ?
1) losing money
2) feeling like shit today, and most likely next few days as well every time I will look at my roll.

Commentary:
10 NL, eh? $5, eh? $0.40 pre-flop bets, eh? F-U-N FUN FUN FUN! I'm going to stick to my guns though, and grind out $100 before I move up. I've seen a lot of "It's 10 NL, play standard and be a winner" these comments on the boards, so I've taken it to heart. I'm making very few exotic plays, and pretty much giving all turn check-raisers, and 4-bettors the benefit of the doubt.
Went to a co-ed baby shower on Saturday. That's right - CO-ED BABY SHOWER. Sometimes I think they hold these events just to see exactly how far they can push us.
