So this blog post has been a long long time in the making. I have wondered and wondered why it was I couldn't win post 2007 in poker and what it was I used to do that I no longer had been able to do. Many had told me how I just "ran very lucky" over a small (100k) sample, and I really didn't want to believe it. What I know now is that 100k is a VERY small sample LOL, and a lot can actually happen in that frame of hands.

LOL first of all, what's funny about this is how good I actually thought I was. I seriously thought there were maybe 2 or 3 others that played 3/6 that were even close to my skill level. It's absolutely laughable how good I thought I was compared to how good I actually was. I'm going to post some hands for fun from back then, it should be enjoyable for anyone who has been around to hear me whine/pout/brag/trash talk during my "career".

What sparked this post was my interest in my EV adjusted from those previous hands, so I e-mailed PS and requested they send me all my hands from 2007. It's taken quite a while to input them all into my HEM, but I started realizing the specific reasons I began to lose.

So before HEM was created, no one actually knew anything about 3bet/4bet %. Some players were 3betting something ridiculous OTB and no one was the wiser. Apparently HEM came out, and everyone got it except me. My entire strategy relied on 3betting, calling 3bets and 4betting. I used to 4b to half my stack, I'd make it 16, 3bettor would make it 52, boom, 200. LOL. I think I even ended up 4betting to 200 then folding sometimes!!! So pretty soon everyone began to learn the proper 3betting/4betting frequencies, and I'm sitting there wondering why people don't call my 3bets anymore and 4bet me so much... I tried to adjust by 5b bluff shoving, but even my weaker opponents knew correct 4betting frequencies, I was sitting there in the dark. That's probably a big reason I started getting stomped on.

Also, it was a lot easier to read hands back then, when people didn't know how to balance their ranges, they would be so scared about getting drawn out on that there was so much raising and 3betting all in on the flop, it was much much easier to figure out what someone had. If I 3bet or called a 3bet (LOL calling 3bets, I guess I used to call 50% of them?... this comes into play a bit later), I'd almost just be raising and getting in any pair, any draw... people would stack off with 2nd pair so I guess it seemed good. Oh, and if they ever called an open, I'd just triple barrel my entire range, because without balance, they end up making it so obvious what they had that it was easy to move them off it or merge and value bet them.

Oh here's another reason ... I was so awful fundamentally in the first place. I played so many of these hands SOOOOOOOOOO bad. I can't put into words how silly I feel for thinking I was so good, because now I realize I'm not very good and I make a ton of mistakes, but I am probably 5x the player I was then. I have trouble even believing that I won money, but then again, I suppose most others weren't very good either.

For as bad as I was fundamentally, there were some things I was good at, which were newer concepts at the time, but now to most people they seem very standard. I.E. the difference between a merged and polarized range. Most people didn't really know what that was about and I definitely used it to exploit people a lot. Bet sizing and timing tells were other things I exploited decently well, though people are much better at figuring those things out, just hand reading in general has improved a ton, even some fish seem to have decent hand reading skills nowadays. Since I've begun winning again, I've really only found a few instances where I've been able to exploit timing at all. These few things I believed I did well are so far outweighed by the drastic fundamental mistakes I made that it just wasn't enough to keep me afloat.

I always used to think that the best players were the ones who induced the most mistakes from their opponents, and I still believe that to an extent, but I think of it in a different way now. I think the best ones are the ones who don't need to do anything extremely negative EV to accomplish this. They tilt their opponents by never making a mistake, then eventually their opponent makes a mistake, and it begins to compound on itself. Solid play always trumps the guy trying to induce action in the long run.

People don't really auto tilt anymore after losing a buy in by getting coolered or whatever because they are so much more used to losing buy ins and are much better at dealing with it in general. Very few play scared money anymore either. Those are other things I used to try to prey on that don't really work too well now.

Anyways, to some of these hands, GOD, they are so ugly LOL....

Obv standard call of the 3bet oop w/ the 84s. I'm not sure whether I'm turning my middle pair into a bluff, or if I'm semi bluffing, but it's extremely doubtful I realized I had a backdoor flush or backdoor straight draw, who thought of those things back then? I guess I thought the % he folds + the % equity I have when he called was enough to make the play +EV, besides, what good player would try to see a flop and play poker? It's much easier to just go all in. But clearly, if I call a 3bet with an 8 and a 4 this flop must have just been too good for me to fold. Well played, nice pot.

Not sure I played this one too bad or anything, but just another testament to the games those days, I like how Rizen decided to call off half his stack before making sure an ace or a king didn't flop to get it in. I suppose if I was able to get him to do that, then 4betting half my stack was a good idea and I owned him. Too bad it's not that easy anymore, LOL.

On the flop: So I guess I thought I could hit a 7 170bb deep and win a big pot on a 4 card straight board w/ the bottom end of it? Suppose I thought it was enough equity to float, wait, gimme a break, I doubt the idea of how much equity I actually had in the pot even crossed my mind. Maybe I thought his range was only flush draws so if the flush didn't come, maybe I thought I could rep a flush? I honestly can't figure it out.

On the turn: So I improve to an oesd, villain bets the turn here, and I decide to rep absolutely nothing by raising him a little over minimum. Clearly I'm supposed to make him believe I slowplayed a monster on the 985cc flop, LOL. So now he shoves and I'm guessing this must have been part of my plan to induce him to go all in so I could call w/ 6 high. Better to be lucky than good, but this definitely wasn't my finest hour.

--So I went looking through this database to see the spot I got it in the worst and sucked out, here's the winner. I remember thinking about this one and thinking "I had top pair and a Q kicker, how could I fold?

GTFO If you can't handle my laziness. by JonnyCosMo, May 16

SPOILER: Blog post contains epic pictures of VITAL FUCKING MYTH below.

Yea, so my New Years Resolution about keeping my blog updated is not going so well as you can see. The playing 2500 hands each day minimum was going well for about 3 weeks, then I realized I'm lazy. I started going to the gym, then stopped, then started again, then stopped again, and now I'm just too busy to get my ass back up to go again. I'm pretty bad with time management and organization in general so that definitely is probably contributing to my so-called laziness. Other than that, this year has been a successful one already for one simple reasons: THE LIVE POKERS!

There is a card room in San Diego called Palomar where they run a 5/10 game with a $2k cap buy-in, with the occasional 10/20 w no cap buy-in. I knew about the place when I first came down here to San Diego, and visited it once or twice at the beginning of last year, when I didn't really have the motivation or discipline to play live poker yet so I never really went back. After a year of practice on the live tournament circuit, and losta time spent in the Vegas live cash games I came back to San Diego with more of both motivation and discipline. So starting last November, I started to dedicate atleast one day a week to the Palomar grind. At the beginning of this year, I was going 2-3 times a week. Starting March I upped it to 4-5 times a week. Basically it would be spewing money not to go, the games are THAT juicy. It really is the sweetest mix of loose/passive random middle aged guys, super old super nits, and gambling loose aggrotards. Very comparable to the Commerce games during LAPC (Really, nothing on earth will surpass the goodness of the live games are Commerce during LAPC). From Jan 1st to the present I'm up ~$65k playing live 5/10 and 10/20 (which breaks down to 21k at Commerce 10/20, and 44k at Palomar 5/10). Pretty funny since most of my time is still spent playing online NL 6-max / HU, and I'm up but not close to those numbers so far this year.

All the practice has really made my live poker reads really sharp, mainly because I get pretty good insight into how different people think about how to play hands. Before I'd always think "Shit this guy is so stupid, none of his logic makes any sense" but now I realize that most people actually attempt some sort of reason to their play and even thou it is incorrect the majority of the time, now it makes a lot more sense to me on why they think these ways in certain spots. Can't think of a better way to put it, here is kind of a basic example of what I'm trying to say: Player A never realizes the pot size in any hand. Therefore, when he faces a $50 bet to him and has the decision between calling or folding he only sees the size of the bet. He reasons that his opponents hand is probably weak because he only bet $50. If his opponent bet $250, he reads the hand strength as strong. So he ends up calling looser in single raised / limped pots, and folding big (seeing ghosts in the closet) in 3bet pots, assuming that his opponent is adjusting his betting sizes to the size of the pot (surprisingly some people don't adjust their betting sizes either because most of them think like Player A). Just one of a dozen things that run through the head of your average live player. Live poker so ez lol...

So far this year, went to LAPC which was a bust tournament wise (Direct yourself two blog posts down to my 10k Commerce event recap), followed by a trip to Rincon which is an hour north of San Diego (even thou they call it WSOP Circuit in San Diego, but in reality that shit hole is nowhere close to SD). Only played the main event there and ended up getting 8th for $24.5k which made up for all the LAPC buy-ins I dropped which was nice. Last hand was a coinflip to the ever so aggressive shaundeeb prodigy, Esther Tayor (E-Tay) for a top 2 stack. Decided to skip the Bellagio series because I got lazy and decided to do real life fun stuff with my friends, here is a short recap with pics:

That's VITAL FUCKING MYTH ONE MORE TIME!

Oh yeah so last Friday was my 24th birthday. Fuck I'm old. We've discussed that if you're 21, you are the average age for an online poker player. At 24, you reach your mid-life crisis. At 28+ your like grandpa (or grandma) to all these young-ins. We ended up having a chill dinner in Mission Beach at this bomb place called Mizu's where they are like "FUCK YEAH!" if you sake bomb. So we sake bombed all night, then headed to Bar West in PB which is also pretty ill. PBDrunks round-house kicked one of our grey goose bottles to the floor. Smooth.

For the weekend me and my "kinda" girlfriend Anna, went to Vegas to see Dave Matthews Band two nights in a row at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Let me mini-rant first: Wynn's ticket service people can suck my fucking left nut. Other than that is was an awesome weekend. Boyd Tinsley on the violin is the illest. Dave Matthews Band absolutely rocked the entire house. I'm def a big fan of all the new stuff they have coming out too. Can't wait til the new CD comes out in June.
Here is some random youtube clip of my favorite song 'Dancing Nancies' played on the second night (Note-> Boyd Tinsley rocks socks):

And a pic from weekend:

Getting schooled week 2 by thestoryteller, May 16

There isn't really a point to this entry but I feel I need to state out loud any small improvements because I'm on the verge of giving up.

2 lessons on I'm breaking even, which I guess is an improvement on losing.

After a hand I can usually see what I should have done, so I guess there's some improvement there.

Some changes I think could help is to maybe cap my play time at 1.5 hours... I notice that after a while I start to zone out a little and that's bad.

for my first day I played 130 hands at 3 .05/.10 cent 6 max tables and won only .38 cents. for sngs I played 43 $3.80 super turbos and lost a total of $34 after playing for 2-3 hours. so for the first day it didn't go so well but there's always tomorrow...

tv shows? by Sliggy, May 15

just finished all 3 seasons of Dexter. in a week. fucking phenomenal show, season 2 was the most amazing thing ever.

need to download more shows! what would I like?

Some opinions:

dexter (perfect)

boston legal (small doses, mainly a fan of the character Alan Shure)

house (house/wilson is the best combo ever, and houses one liners are great. dont like how structured the show is though, it's done by formula. it's boring whenever house isn't on screen too, so I guess I'm more a fan of the character)

lost (stopped watching after season 2. is it worth picking up again? apparently they're travelling in time now... wtf?)

prison break (never watched a single episode. not too intrigued... is it good?)

Oz (heard it's great, been meaning to check it out)

nip/tuck (if any show has any elements similar to this show i'm not interested)

Scrubs (2nd favorite show, but looking for something more serious)

This is like my February all over again, but instead of breaking even at 1/2, I spent half the month digging myself out of the hole 5/10 dug me. Finally back in it! Such high variance sessions, win 1 bi, immediately lose another, etc. =[

met Phil Hellmuth online by PplusAD, May 15

Played some vs giant asshole today

he bought in for 25bb on NL50 HU table
he was a giant nit

always minraising button
folding ~95% from sb (all except KQs,AQ,AK, JJ+)

he always check/ folded when he didnt hit
he always value bettet when he had a hand
+ he overplayed 1 Pair made hands.

So only few hands into the game where we didnt know each other yet
I get 9dTd on button
i raise he calls

flop 7h9hTh he checks, i bet he pushes i call ( well i have Top 2 + he is an unknown shortstack + drawy board)
he flips over KhQh for the made flush.
turn 9
river blank

Thrash talk starts instantly as soon as i hit my 9

His words
U fucking idiot ... how can u call that flop with only 2 pair !
Do u think i get money in here with less than a flush or made straight ???
U donkey ...
Another donkey wins with luck

well i didnt reply so far but made a note that he is clueless about poker ....
(obviously Top 2 vs unknown shortstack on flop is definitely worth to go broke always

he reloads to 20bb

the next few hands he always minraised button and folded all sblinds.
I realized he is a giant nit who folds a lot postflop and preflop and never bluffs

at one point he had chipped up to 50bb ( i lost all in 88vshis QJ on Q high flop^^) and raised to 1$ .... i call 50c from sb with 83s

flop 8s7s3d

i bet/ he minraises ... i raise pretty big so that he is comitted -> he pushes all in and shows JJ
83 holds ...
he reloads to 20bb

Hellmuth is on mega tilt now berating me for the next 10 minutes

U fucking fish .. u have no clue
call a pf raise with 83 ????
OMG
OMG u are so bad
wtf how does it feel to win on a rigged site !
u lucky donkey ...
u know nothing about poker

I asked him if hes Phil Hellmuth
^^

http://www.pokernews.com/files_en/cnt/446b5a3baae71.jpg
after about 10 minutes i stack his 20bb again having KK vs his TP

he sits out and was gonna tell me the story of his life how he always runs bad and all donkeys run good etc
But i wasnt interested too much so i just quit after telling him he sucks ass and doenst know what hes doing

gg have fun in your dreamworld thinking u know anything about poker.

Haha, was funny reading chat and listening to 10nl regs talk back to me on msn :D :D

Month so far:

Pokerwise, things have been going pretty good. I started the month in 25nl after Midian put me in there as I have mentioned in my previous blog. I have spent most my time in 25nl, I took a 50nl shot which went pretty breakeven (-$60) it was a good experience but I don't think I am quite ready for it yet but I will be ready soon, I promise!

I think I am understanding the game a lot more and can't wait to hear midians philosophy about 100nl :D I have been reading over my hand histories after sessions and identifying shit play and where I can improve which has helped me out. I also have been very much reading lp every day, even whilst I am meant to be working but its all I can think about ;o My determination is pretty high though I am struggerling in entering enough volume because of work and other real life related things... ;S

I finished work today, I have a 3week holiday in which I will spent the first week with my sister as I havent seen her at all recently and then the next 2 at Jamies house, drinking/poker n stuff.

I have been talking a lot with DoC.LemOn tonight and its pretty cool to listen to what he has to think about poker meta game and how he thinks, I hopefully throw something back on the table for him with some points I made and its just good to generally chat about things. I also had my first liquidpoker CHAT with some1 that I didn't actually know, I forgot your name already, fuck, but yer was good, more people should use it..

Going out for my football team dinner tomorrow night, expensive night, suppose iam out to get ILL. Fun times...

Small blog turned into a ramp of text, cool?

BTW... I still need to ship $56.83 from FTP so if any1 has read this far can help me out LOL thanks

Mid Month UPDATE by killThemDonks, May 15

Month is going pretty okay so far. up about 60bi at NL20 incl. RB and FPP conversion. Still aiming for a 150bi month and 100k hands but I'm a bit off pace for this week. Had an argument with my mom a couple of days ago that tilted me like never before! Ended up smashing my computer and sucking at teh pokers. w/e..

This weekend should be good for getting off tilt. Big party at the Guvernment (club in toronto) featuring Benny Benassi!
Here's a glimpse of whats to come

Plateauing by Sicks Macks, May 15

I wrote a really shitty blog post yesterday because I was drunk, but the point I was trying to get across was genuine. I'm disappointed that I've kind of stagnated as a player. I'm still beating the games, but it's disappointing because I've learned so much about poker and combinatoric math in the past few months and my winrate isn't what I would have expected to be the product of all the work I put in and the intellectual progress I feel I've made. I'm still surprised by the variance inherent in poker and I'm obviously incredibly impressed by people who keep up 3-4ptbb winrates in tough games over big samples. Part of this is that I'm also coming to the realization, that while I can get good money through poker, it likely won't make me stupid rich. As pragmatically as I feel I approached the game, that's got to be the fantasy in the back of everyone's mind when they cam over from TL, right?

In before "shake up your game", because obviously I have to. I may switch to full ring for a bit, because I feel I play a tight range as opener best, and have a solid iso'ing game.

Halp Me Find Leaks by AutumnSolace, May 15

I'm a micro stakes player that sucks.

Seriously I need someone to just sweat me for an hour and just review a session of me playing. My bankroll is currently $140 and I don't know how to properly work out a payment plan without getting a huge dent in my money. Maybe we could arrange like a 1-hour session a week and you get 20% of my profits?

Well, if anyone is willing to do this I'm open to suggestions for how I'll pay you. I have teamviewer 3 and mikogo + msn: Autumnsolace@live.com

Why do I instantly run bad when at 2k or nearing? by BalloonFight, May 15

Everytime I either break it with like $2010 or whatever I just instantly get setup twice. I've been at like 1800s and 1900s for so fucking long its absurd.

Holliday! by AcroN, May 15

Finished my last exam yesterday at 3. So now its officially vacation time!

The last one was another oral exam, so already got the grades today. I did pretty good in this one, scoring a B. Really happy with my performance there. And it weighs up for my shitty draw and performance on the first were i got a D. Now ill have to wait 3-4 weeks until the grades from the 2 written exams come in to see how the rest turned out.

Gonna try starting poker again asap. Probably won't be until Sunday or Sunday though. There's a big "Sensation White Theme Party" tomorrow at the top of the student building in the middle of Kongsberg. There will be a DJ playing all night, some company is coming over with their equipment to hold a light / laser show up there too. Night before 17th is a special party night for us, since 17th of May its like our national day. So gonna be pretty much partying all night!

Laters!
