Been reading through half of the book, and it's really good. So I thought I'd list down most of the important stuff I've been through so far (Most for my own benefits).
Understand and Accept the Realities of Poker
- You need to understand the Five Realities of Poker, but more important you need to accept them. The Five Realities of Poker are:
1. Poker is a game of both skill and luck.
2. In the short term, luck is king.
3. In the long term, skill is king.
4. Poker is a game of small edges.
5. Poker is a game of high variance.
Play for the Long Term
- If you are looking to make money from poker, you need to play for the long term and accept the short-term risks.
- A player who puts too much emphasis on his short-term results will be prone to the following errors:
- Playing to get even
- Protecting a win
- Tilting
- Getting mad at bad players
- Making rash changes to his game
Emphasize Correct Decisions over Making Money
- The big advantage of playing poker for the long term is that you can focus on the only thing that is important: making correct decisions.
- "correct play" is defined as the best play you could reasonably be expected to make given the information you have available.
- If you make correct decisions, your short-term results are irrelevant as you will make money in the long term.
Desensitize Yourself to Money
- It is difficult to make correct decisions at the table if you are scared to lose the money in front of you.
- You could fall into a number of traps by playing scared:
- Not protecting your hand properly
- Not value betting your good hands enough
- Playing too tight
- Not calling enough in big bet poker
- Not bluffing enough
- Two factors tend to contribute to how likely you are to play scared:
1. How strong is your bankroll?
2. What is your attitude to money?
Leave your Ego at the Door
- Your ego may lead you into several traps at the table, the following eight being the most common:
1. You might call bets that you shouldn't.
2. You might allow a personal feud to cloud or override your judgment.
3. You are likely to try too hard to get even.
4. You might play in games you can't beat.
5. You might make plays to impress your opponents.
6. You might not drop down a limit when you should.
7. You could inadvertently give away information to your opponents.
8. You might scare away players who you would rather stay.
Remove All Emotion from Decisions
- Many players let emotion affect their poker decisions, yet emotions should have no impact whatsoever on the decisionmaking process.
- Emotions can cause you to make sub-optimal plays that you would not otherwise make.
- Many types of emotions can affect your game such as anger, frustration, misery, fear, happiness, pity, pride and nervousness.
- A poker player has two defenses against his emotions:
1. Do not play when you are in an emotional state that may cause your play to suffer.
2. Acknowledge your emotions, but don't allow them to affect your decisions.
Dedicate Yourself to a continuous cycle of Analysis and improvement
- In order to ensure long-term success at poker, you must commit to an ongoing program of analysis and improvement.
- If you stop learning at poker, not noly will you not improve, but your game is likely to regress.
- There are many reasons why long-time players might become less keen on learning over time, including:
- Complacency
- Illusions of mastery
- Loss of enthusiasm
- Stagnation
- Top players may disagree on many things, but the one thing thta they will voice resounding agreement on is that they are still learning.
Oh crap lol, it got a lot longer than I thought it would, still got like 3/4 of the book left, I'll take more later lol. Wanna eat, my eggs are getting cold xD
Some coolers/advice please/Live handsby Night2o1, May 23
The only one I really think I could of done differently is the bolded part in hand 1, the rest are just whines/please kill me/ I think I'm going to go play in traffic hands. Though lemme know if you spot a mis-play in those.
1)
Stacks $400 effective
Limper fish UTG+1, I limp T8s from MP, 4 limpers behind me including button + big blind
Flop T84r
I lead for 10 into 18, 2 fold
Button who is an european online midstakes player (though didn't seem very aggressive) raises me to $30, big blind folds so its HU
I 3bet to $95, he calls
Turn 6r, pot is ~$200 we have $200 behind
I can't remember anything about how he was acting except maybe that he said "Hmm, 65 more?" and called after a short bit of time.
Do you give up here? Is 3betting the flop bad?
Obviously pokerstove says that I'm a favorite if he can have any set (I never expect him to have an overpair or TT) and any 2pair, but do people/nits aka regs fold all worse 2pair (And possibly the rare T8) to my 3bet?

2)
Stacks are $450 at 1/3. All I know about villain is that he's an online midstakes FR reg on cakepoker. Been playing with him for a bit and he hasn't been splashing around in pots or anything, just looks like a pretty standard tight reg-guy
I limp 77 from UTG+1. He raises MP over me + a limper to $16 (standard). Big blind calls, I call, limper calls.
Flop 79Qss pot $65
I lead $40, guy folds, Cake reg raises to $120. BB fold. I raise to $300.
Cake reg shoves for the $130 or whatever more, I call.
I hung out with this guy and his crew away from the tables and they said its pretty much a cooler, though the cake reg said that he might of folded all draws vs my 3bet due to "deepness". WHAT THE FUCK>??????? Myth also said to never fold. My question is if my lead/3bet is good, since it seems to turn my hand face up.
So when he raises my lead, is his range now..

3) Stacks are effectively upto $400 I raise QJss UTG+1 on a pretty good table, though I get an unexpected 7 callers.
I say to the dealer, "Ok that's good, now could I just flop the nuts please?"
He says "We'll see"
Flop AKThh
Pot is $80, do you lead here? How much do you bet?
I lead for $50 and everyone instantly folded, then the last person to fold, a fish, showed me an Ace that they mucked??????

I played a lot of poker at the end of 2008, but I stopped a little before Christmas (withdrew most of my bankroll and used it to help buy Christmas gifts for my family and myself). I posted here at the end of November but stopped after getting annoyed by a downswing and forgetting to come back for a while. I didn't play during this semester of school because I was very busy, practice four days a week, lifting three days a week, going to tournaments every other weekend, I really didn't have time for poker. However I have lots of time this summer and I think I'd like to start up again. I left myself a small bankroll, enough for some penny level shenanigans; there I'll try to get my game back and improve on what little ability I had. I've been playing for the last few days a few hundred hands at a time and it feels great.
Nothing substantial to this blog post, just wanted to get in the rhythm of posting them. Take it easy.
yesterday morning, i woke up in the middle of a street in downtown new orleans at around 9 am, while being arrested for public drunkenness. i don't remember what i was doing the night before that when i passed out. i lost my wallet with about $250 in it, and my blackberry. i spent the entirety of yesterday on the cold concrete floor of the jail cell, drunk the first half and hung over during the next. my body is still sore all over the place.
i was a little surprised to see that my dad was there to pick me up (at around 10pm). he'd been waiting there for hours. and when i got out, there were no harsh words or judgment or criticism. i don't know why i automatically called my parents first when i got arrested. i'm no longer supposed to rely on them anymore for anything. i really can't handle them being so loving and supportive because i can't ever give them what they want. it makes me feel like i owe a debt that i can't repay and that sucks. all i've done is shown them how far i could go in the way of destroying my life. and i feel absolutely terrible about that, but at the same time, i don't want to let my guard down and let them tell me what to do either.
the whole situation should hopefully make me realize that i need to start taking care of myself?
ps, i really would like for this downswing of life to end asap
Not updated in a day or two. Been a little lazy xD
Not played as much as I'd like, yesterday I played 2 hours, today I played 2 hours as well. I went down a buy in yesterday, and up 2 today, so I guess I can't complain.
Roll at a little over 2600 euro at the moment, so at the moment I'm pretty break even since I moved to 50nl.
I also found out I'm a bit scared to post hands, because I only post the hands I feel I played the worst on, or lost the most. A bit embaressing xD
This session, these were the 3 hands I played the worst
(Would love input, I have written stuff under each hand)
In other news, new bleach manga out!!
So annoyed, I wanted Halibel to just tear him apart and kill him or something, make it more interessting. I hate all that call out to the sky, more ice, blabla, and that stupid ice dragon comes =(
(Doesn't make sense at all if he's suddenly gonna beat her, Aizen have so much faith in his top Espada, and he finished off Hitsugaia without breakin a sweath!! Grrr)
**** UPDATE ****
Oh, have gotten some reading done lately as well. Can recommend the articles on bluefire, just 3 there, all seemed decent and good. Trying to watch more Nieman Kenkre vods as well on Bluefire, I tried watching that Drgiggy vods, but he just making weird noises doing I dunno what, couldn't stand it lol (no offense) so don't recommend that guy at all lol
Kenkre and Phil Galfond are the nuts on that site xD
regarding aggro br managementby rockman255, May 22
i think i play reasonably okay and ive had two swings, one -17 bi over 7k hands and one -11 bi over 2k hands over the course of ~60k hands in this month
seems too likely it can happen during an "aggro shot" and wipe out most of your br if you play too short
oh, umm, yeah, i dont like to play through my swings either, so the 7k hand one was probably over like 5 sessions, and the second one was over like 3 sessions
Ok after my fiascos from the other day and what not, cleared my mind pokerwise and as of next week i dont have college for a long time, if im trying to improve my game whilst ofcourse steadily gaining $$ what would you suggest as the best amount to play perday? How many hours/tables? As its only micronl10 is 9 tabling nit ringing for like 5 hours a day a good suggestion or ? Cos whatever happens, i think ill be putting in atleast 20k hands a week i think maybe more maybe less depending on RL stuff so hm yeah any thoughts appreciated.

I've been set-over-set more than 5 times this month.
Almost everytime I've gotten it in I've been drawing nearly dead.
With QJ I flop AKTss in an 8way raised pot, I cbet and everyone folds.
With KK I flop KATss against a huge station/fish, he calls flop, turn Jr. He has AQ.
I have T8 on T84r vs bottom set.
77 on 79Qss vs QQ
33 on 37Tr vs 77
etc
I have 44 on 469ss and everyone folds to my cbet.
Sorry I can't bring myself to write anything constructive or interesting. Hopefully I'll run good and can start posting some interesting thoughts or whatever.
One thing is that I'm meeting a bunch of people, almost all of them other poker players. The 1/3-2/5 tables are jam packed with online midstakes regs (1/2-3/6). I need to get to 5/10 asap to get away from these guys during WSOP.
Obviously that's never happening because I'm stuck in set-over-set hell.
Though I do wish I played better (ie in the KK on ATKJ hand, stacks were $220 on turn w/ a $200 pot and I was oop, Myth says that bet/fold ~$40 is probably optimal but I bet $100/called due to the guy being a huge huge fish)..... I don't think I play so bad that I should be losing at 1/3-2/5.
So poker doesn't work out very well this month so right now I'm writing a script for a short movie. It's a about an American who travels to Sweden because he has read about our blond nymphomaniacs and polar bears in the streets. When he comes here he sees that Sweden isn't like that and the girls won't like him since he doesn't wash himself properly and thus smells (he's an environmentalist, that's why he wanted polar bears, so soap hurts mother nature too much). In his rage he goes on a killing spree and kills a lot of non-blond girls. In the end our heroine, who is blond with some huge knockers, has to kill him. To do so she needs to enter a wet T-shirt contest to distract him (he liked blonds, that's also why he came here).
So its 430 and I live in the middle of nowhere so I can't get any fucking food everything is closed wtf? Why am I still driving around with stupid drunk bitches...wtf the things I fucking do while running block oh wells bored as fuck hungry as fuck going to go nuts oh well the beaches open up tomorrow because missouri is fucking gay and they don't open til memorial day oh well maybe there will be some hotties but I doubt it cause I live in the middle of nowhere wtf..... Ps attik34 is a fag
PokerStars is pleased to announce the release of two new Account Security Enhancements which will help enhance the security of your PokerStars account. We're sending this special email to you because you maintain a significant PokerStars account balance.
does this mean I'm rich now? I hope so... i haven't played in like a week so hopefully there was a mistake and they put money in my account, cause I don't think I have a significant pokerstars account balance, lol.
