Might Offer Coaching by k2o4, June 18

Stop laughing!

=)

I have no illusions that I'm some super pimping awesome poker player, but I do know that I have beaten every limit below NL100, have about 3 yrs of poker experience, have received coaching from some fantastic players, and have been doing poker as a part time job for the last 6 months and consistently pulling out money as a supplemental income. I'm sure there are microstakes guys that would like to achieve the same level and I can help them do that, and would like to help.

As I have more free time now and am getting back into poker, I've been thinking about the idea of coaching people. I enjoy teaching and I really like helping people learn and seeing them grow.

The point of this blog post is to gauge interest. I'm thinking of doing something along these lines:

  1) Free 15-30 minutes consultation to see if you'd be a good fit as a student
2) If we decide to go ahead with coaching then $50 per session which lasts at least 1 hr and may go for 2 or more.
3) If you are taking consistent lessons (at least 1 a week) then you can PM me hands anytime and I'll go over em for ya.
4) If I have no idea what to do in a situation I will consult with friends who are better players than I am so that you get a good answer.
5) Coaching is targeted to NL100 and lower (but if someone wanted help moving up to NL200 or just getting used to it I can help there).

I currently grind NL200 and definitely don't feel good about giving someone advice at that level, but I have played like 300k hands of NL100 and won a lot there and beat every level below it, so I feel good giving coaching to anyone at those levels.

Note, to someone @ NL100 $50 is a small coaching fee, which is intentional cause I figure I won't be as helpful at that point, where as for NL50 it's a solid fee but I will be very helpful, and NL25 and lower it's a lot of money for a session in relation to your buyin amount BUT I will be extremely helpful to you.

And even if I don't know that much more poker strategy than you (IE a good NL100 reg) I have spent a lot of time focusing on learning about improving results with techniques that aren't related to basic poker strategy, like tilt control, focus, discipline, etc. So I am not just offering lessons on how to play a hand, but bigger lessons on how to approach poker and be successful.

So, would there be any interest? I have a much more in depth plan of how to be a great coach in my head and I've only given some general details of what I'd like to do here. If there's some interest in this then I'll take the time to put together a full out post and start making appointments with people for the free consultations. If there's no interest then I'll just spend more time grinding =)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have a good screen sharing program that allows us to do sessions smoothly plus talk easily either via the phone or your microphone/speakers. So the coaching sessions will not be hampered by shitty technology which I know happens a lot

If you live in Sweden, could you tell me if you particularly like or dislike one grocery store brand and why? I'm particularly interested if you have any thoughts on Hemkop, Willys or PrisXtra.

wsop event 28 recap. by I_run_godlike, June 18

Another $1500 donkfest.

I am in all confidence to say that I played the best tournament poker in my entire poker career in this event, tho the result went the opposite.

My stack went from 4500 to 1300 in the first orbit when my AK < QQ aipf; but that's not it! I made a sick come back just couple of hours later.

first I had 79hh on 88998 board and this fish bet/fold the river (which is weird cuz it wasn't much more for him to call) and my stack was back up to 2400.

Few hands later, I had AhAd on Kd5d6d board when the same fish c/r and called my 3bet shove w/ 8x8d and my AA held up.

Then I had AdQx on A3d6d board where I bet/3b jam on this idiot's "raise to see where he was at" bet and he mucked. That brought my stack to above 7k

Then the very next hand, I had AJo on J85r against a rando and the fish on my right where he c/c the flop cbet and left himself 4k in the pot of 8k and folded to my shove on the turn 6. This pot brought my stack to over 12k at 100/200 which is the chip leader on my table of passive donks and fish.

After exchanging some chips as a bank on the table, friggin variance decided to say hi to other players.

One major pots that I lost is: the fish limp (who's vpip is 80/5 ish), guy on my right (with 7k) who's been playing tight, raised to 700, I flat w/ AxQs on the co and btn flats, bb who has 2500 only also flats, fish was like..okay pot odds and he flats. So 3500 to the flop. Flop came AsKsTs (bang! top pair plus royal draw!), bb open shoves 1800, fish reshoves for 4k total and pfr folded and I snapped.

bb showed 56ss and fish showed KTcc. I got the nut flush on the turn but the effing river paired the K. The fish was jumping up and down and yelling and saying something like "i'm on my way to the final table" like he never wins an all in pot before. That hand brought my stack down to about 7k.

Then I proceed to lose few small pots and had 5.5k left which is still okay given the blinds were still 100/200 at the time.

few hands later, the guy on my right lost big chunk of his stack w/ his AK aipf against QQ and couldn't hit and he had 4bb left; so he started to shove like a maniac and brought his stack up to 1700ish before he doubles up through me on this hand.

Folds to him in the mp2 and he open ships again and I looked down ATo and decided to reship, everyone folded. He turned over A5o and I was v happy with my read but the flop J58 killed my mood and my stack completely.

Just not too long after that hand, blinds went up to 150/300 and i had just about 3800ish left. utg1 opens to 1100, folded to me in the sb w/ 88 and I decided to go with the hand and I jammed. utg1 moaned and tanked and finally called w/ KJo. Dealer gave him a QT9 flop to send me back to the bustoville again.

conclusion: very very soft field, tons of fish who have no clue what they are doing but the variance is just sick to my stomach. Played soooooo effing good but ran like the unluckiest guy in the world.

Breaking even again by k2o4, June 18

This has been the story of my poker life lately - break even or lose money. No heaters for me =(

Did a hand review today and found that all but 1 of my stackoffs were either A) losing a flip PF or B) coolers. There was 1 hand where it was a clear fold as all I had was an overpair + a gutshot vs 2 opponents who were going crazy, but I was tilty and not willing to let go of a hand. I made the mistake of seeing the flop and going "I'm getting this in" and not adjusting my plan when I saw the rest of the action. MUST MAKE DECISIONS ACCORDING TO ALL INFORMATION IN THE MOMENT!

Time for a new Monitor (help please) by Balzamon, June 18

First of all i know these questions are asked all of the time, i tried search some but didnt find exactly what i wanted, but i keep the question in my blog!

Atm i only have a 22", not really cutting it so i've been thinking of getting myself a 30" to be able to get the max resolution of 2560 x 1600. They are really expensive tho, starting at ~$1700 so i really want to hear opinion from people already having ones. Are they worth it? How many tables do you max out without overlap? Would a 27" cut it just as well? Which brand to go with?

I could also say that im not a masstabler, never more than 8tabling 6max. But atm i use minitables on ipoker, not leaving much room at all for HUD stats and so on so not the ideal situation. What would be the best setup for me?

Thanks for any help <3

KK fun by Achoo, June 18

Im gonna rant u guys are warned. I really need to vent to get some steam off, ive been grinding back from 40$ left on ps and right now i just hit the 2.5k mark after a month or so but godamn the last 3 days were just awful i have a winrate of 3.5bb/100 which is just terribad. Today i ran twice into Aces with Kings and had to fold them postflop due to obvious me being crushed by his range, im just so sick of Kings. So out of curiosity and see if i was not a drama queen i filtered Kings over the last 3 days in HEM to see if this is that bad or if its just me being a retard:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/7c907a49b43a5f2df46954a998b06c29.jpg

51 times and they are in the red, i mean wtf ?! I get dealt Kings way too much compared to other pps (i really get a lot of kings) and i play them the same way i d play Aces, i never get fancy and go str8 for value. This is the second most profitable hand in this game and i should be up much much more if only they could hold just like they re suposed to this is getting unreal i almost feel sick to my stomach when i see Kings showing up on my tables this is just nuts.

I pray the poker gods theyd stop torturing me with this hand from now on, but u never can be sure of anything in this crazy game. Id REALLY appreciate to at least break even with kings for the next week and dont lose money anymore with that godamn hand ffs. Just to compare, ive been dealt half as many Aces and they are big winners obv :

http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/1d9ea051a3ef6df0dd7cc9d502c114b8.jpg

Even if i m not expecting that much $$ from Kings they should at least be in the green and wtf is up with being dealt twice more many kings than aces ? I know sample size blabla but cmon wtf...

Drugs Won The War by TenBagger, June 18

NYTimes Op-Ed =

Drugs Won the War
NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published: June 13, 2009

This year marks the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s start of the war on drugs, and it now appears that drugs have won.

“We’ve spent a trillion dollars prosecuting the war on drugs,” Norm Stamper, a former police chief of Seattle, told me. “What do we have to show for it? Drugs are more readily available, at lower prices and higher levels of potency. It’s a dismal failure.”

For that reason, he favors legalization of drugs, perhaps by the equivalent of state liquor stores or registered pharmacists. Other experts favor keeping drug production and sales illegal but decriminalizing possession, as some foreign countries have done.

Here in the United States, four decades of drug war have had three consequences:

First, we have vastly increased the proportion of our population in prisons. The United States now incarcerates people at a rate nearly five times the world average. In part, that’s because the number of people in prison for drug offenses rose roughly from 41,000 in 1980 to 500,000 today. Until the war on drugs, our incarceration rate was roughly the same as that of other countries.

Second, we have empowered criminals at home and terrorists abroad. One reason many prominent economists have favored easing drug laws is that interdiction raises prices, which increases profit margins for everyone, from the Latin drug cartels to the Taliban. Former presidents of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia this year jointly implored the United States to adopt a new approach to narcotics, based on the public health campaign against tobacco.

Third, we have squandered resources. Jeffrey Miron, a Harvard economist, found that federal, state and local governments spend $44.1 billion annually enforcing drug prohibitions. We spend seven times as much on drug interdiction, policing and imprisonment as on treatment. (Of people with drug problems in state prisons, only 14 percent get treatment.)

I’ve seen lives destroyed by drugs, and many neighbors in my hometown of Yamhill, Oregon, have had their lives ripped apart by crystal meth. Yet I find people like Mr. Stamper persuasive when they argue that if our aim is to reduce the influence of harmful drugs, we can do better.

Mr. Stamper is active in Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, or LEAP, an organization of police officers, prosecutors, judges and citizens who favor a dramatic liberalization of American drug laws. He said he gradually became disillusioned with the drug war, beginning in 1967 when he was a young beat officer in San Diego.

“I had arrested a 19-year-old, in his own home, for possession of marijuana,” he recalled. “I literally broke down the door, on the basis of probable cause. I took him to jail on a felony charge.” The arrest and related paperwork took several hours, and Mr. Stamper suddenly had an “aha!” moment: “I could be doing real police work.”

It’s now broadly acknowledged that the drug war approach has failed. President Obama’s new drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, told the Wall Street Journal that he wants to banish the war on drugs phraseology, while shifting more toward treatment over imprisonment.

The stakes are huge, the uncertainties great, and there’s a genuine risk that liberalizing drug laws might lead to an increase in use and in addiction. But the evidence suggests that such a risk is small. After all, cocaine was used at only one-fifth of current levels when it was legal in the United States before 1914. And those states that have decriminalized marijuana possession have not seen surging consumption.

“I don’t see any big downside to marijuana decriminalization,” said Peter Reuter, a professor of criminology at the University of Maryland who has been skeptical of some of the arguments of the legalization camp. At most, he said, there would be only a modest increase in usage.

Moving forward, we need to be less ideological and more empirical in figuring out what works in combating America’s drug problem. One approach would be for a state or two to experiment with legalization of marijuana, allowing it to be sold by licensed pharmacists, while measuring the impact on usage and crime.

I’m not the only one who is rethinking these issues. Senator Jim Webb of Virginia has sponsored legislation to create a presidential commission to examine various elements of the criminal justice system, including drug policy. So far 28 senators have co-sponsored the legislation, and Mr. Webb says that Mr. Obama has been supportive of the idea as well.

“Our nation’s broken drug policies are just one reason why we must re-examine the entire criminal justice system,” Mr. Webb says. That’s a brave position for a politician, and it’s the kind of leadership that we need as we grope toward a more effective strategy against narcotics in America.

mini rant by WilsWils, June 18

woke up ready to take a shot at nl200 today

but decided to play a bit more of nl100 for a confidence boost, since ive been beating it for like 5.8bb/100 over 56k hands (while still running about 10bi below ev) so i was like YEAHHH LETS CRUSHH YEAHHHHH

since it was liek 6 am my time i decided to just do a 6 table session because i found some fking amazing 60-90% vpip fish , i also played the 15k guar

said fish started playing back at me as i started 3b isoing them , and ended up stacking off to me on J34 with KJo to my AJ, binks his 3 outer in a 4 BI pot, halp

then vs another fish end up getting top top in against his turned set for another 4 BI

then busted out of the guar when super fishy station called my flop OB on 462ddd with Kd7h when i had 66

might play some live tonight, but ffs, hate it when you trap fish and go "YESSSS I GOT YOUUUUU" , then they bink their 5% chance , and leave the table. /rage

honestly tho, im only down 2bi, but just gross cause i should be up around 4-5 or so ..need teh monies to play nl200 yo

I just got back from a 6 month stay in Bangkok. Going back there in a month or so for another 6 months.

I'm taking a short 2 week holiday in a friend's 3k euro/month apartment in Malta (st julians)

I walked to the casino last night which is pretty close to the apartment. some quite attractive ladies go there so i think it must be a pretty good pickup spot.

here are some pics of the apartment http://img197.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=cimg0030n.jpg

bought a boat by Gsr_01_integ, June 17

So i quit poker for the summer, its just been so nice enjoying the weather and just being out in the sun instead of all day in front of a computer. I figure i can cash out my roll for the summer and its not like poker is going anywhere and will still be there for me to redeposit in the winter time when boating isnt the main thing for me to do. I had the decision to finish my car and get all the body work and painted or buy a boat. well obv the boat is more fun than having my car all hooked up. I have a body kit and rims on my integra just sucks its not painted yet but to get a person to do all the body work around here u have to wait a month or so just to get an appt. I wish everyone on LP lots of luck im sure ill still be browsing around here now and then. GL to all and enjoy life cause u only get one life to live.

recovery by remember87, June 17

the past 2 days I have played great poker again! There is something about my room, when its all calm around me and I can focus 100% on the poker - then I play so good! Today I was in the zone, I read my opponents well and I ran pretty well. I played for 6h straight, kinda lost a little in the end when the hunger kicked in, but before that I am more then pleased with my play.

The result reflected the play, 6+BI, and now I´m a couple of BI up again for the month. In the future I think I will try to stay home when I am grinding so external elements cant effect my results in a negative way... I love this feeling I have right now about my play
