Introduction to Poker and Interestsby K40Cheddar, April 09
Whats up everyone. Thought I'd make a blog and detail my poker success (and failures) as motivation for me to try and get better.
Here's a little about myself to start.
My name is James Pavese. I'm from Burr Ridge, Illinois, a suburb outside of the Chicago area. I'm a freshman at the University of Illinois. Currently, I'm fluctuating between majors. I originally tried to get into actuarial science but the department was difficult and getting in was a hassle. It looks like I'll probably end up double majoring in statistics and economics.
I started playing poker for free in high school. I mostly stuck with tournaments and sit & gos. I felt like I was pretty hot stuff at poker and thought I'd try out the real money games in college. I made my first deposit in August for $50, played a $50 6-max table, and lost it in 10 min, stacking off with 88. Then I redeposited the next day for $50, played the same game, and lost it in 15 minutes, stacking off with A 10. I had no concept of strategy like I thought I did. I really needed some inspiration and help. On quad day, the day at school where all the clubs meet to recruit new members, I found the illini poker club. I was immediately interested and signed up right away. The club is mainly instructional for management and playing online. I started grinding NL 2 with a $25 deposit but I really had to work on patience (I know it's NL 2 but I sucked ass at the time). I kept practicing and got up to NL 5 fast and then NL 10. That's where I hit my first road block. I used to play like a super nit and get scared to play hands. So, naturally, I got owned when people started becoming semi-decent. I ended up going down about 28 BI at NL 10 November-February. But I never messed my bankroll up and always dropped down to NL 5 when I got under 20 BI. Now, I'm working on beating NL 25 after I learned better play after the flop and opening my range a little. Only took one shot at NL 25 so far so I'm getting the feel of it.
I'm a guy that has many other interests besides poker. Poker is just a hobby for me. The money really doesn't matter. I'm just playing to become "good", and the only way to do that is to move up in stakes, and make enough winnings so you look like a competent player (right now I'm an aggressive fish, but it'll change, hopefully ). I'm a beast at chess, with a USCF rating at 2064. If you don't know what that means, it means I'm somewhere in the top 500 players in the country (rough estimate, details unknown). I suck at 5-min blitz so anyone that's like 1800 could probably own me in that. I play the trombone in the Marching Illini. I've been playing trombone for about 10 years and plan on continuing that. In high school, I did gymnastics. It helped me get into shape and was a lot of fun. I specialized in the floor and vault events. Now I'm really out of shape and can hardly do anything anymore. It makes me sad . I like math, specifically any type of math involving heavy calculations or mathematical brain teasers. I regularly play xbox live under the username "K40Cheddar". Typical games include guitar hero, halo 3, and call of duty modern warfare 2. If anyone has heard of the xbox live arcade game "Marble Blast Ultra", I'm probably top 25 in the world at that game. Used to play Warcraft III online if anyone remembers it.
Thats pretty much all I've got. I love life and love helping others share the same perspective. Through my poker experiences, I would say that I'm qualified helping any beginning player with management skills and strategies to beat NL 2, NL 5, and NL 10. My email address is pavese.james@gmail.com if anyone has any questions or advice on how to get started. Peace out!
old nittish guy with 18bb's opens UTG, playmaster retard who will probably be the next stars pro flats in MP, i squeeze button with AK diamonds, utg nit folds, playmaster future stars pro and elite high level player backraise ships it having me covered
i call and he has 67 suited, i am drawing dead on the flop. tournaments are a real skill game.
LOL sleep reset didn't work at allby Night2o1, April 09
For the past 9 days or so my sleep schedule has been completely ass backwards, waking up at 5-8pm and going to bed at 6-10am. It hasn't been so bad, I've been feeling fine during my waking hours 'n such, it is just inconvenient since I haven't been able to see silver)z( and byrnesam during waking hours, or my other friends in thailand. So I end up just playing videogames all the time that I'm not playing poker..
Anyway, I decided to try to fix it by slowly moving my bed time later and waking up later, eventually I woke up at 11pm and was like fuck it I'll stay up 'til the next night's midnight or 1am. I did that, went to bed at 1.30AM andddddddd woke up at 7PM.
God damn it.
If I go back to the states on this schedule I will be on perfectly synchronization to be awake during the day though!

POKER
I sure have progressed far in a month since I wrote my last blog. I said last time that I was going back to fullring and giving up on PLO for good. I stuck to the giving up PLO part and am pretty excited that I did! I started playing NL100 after my last blog and made like 30BIs in less then 10k hands. Then started game selecting at NL200 FR and did really well and was able to start doing the same for 400/600. Once I hit 5/10 again though I had to go back to mixing in mainly 6max tables because those games are so much better then the 5/10 FR games that run on Stars. The main thing I was doing different was actually playing less tables. I have been trying to play mainly 6-8 tables at a time and my results have been tremendous at each level so far doing this, defintly plan on sticking to this for awhile.
Here is my 5/10 graph so far, as you can see at the beginning when I was just playing FR I was about breakeven. Then I switched back to the game I am best at 6m and started crushing.
I actually haven't ran that well in terms of EV but I'm still up so pretty happy. Im down like 6BIs at 10/20 from some ridic run bad and up some at 25/50, especially after this hand from today.

I had played about like 35-50 hands so far, opened a bunch of pots pre and 3bet a few times. This is probably the first flop at the table though. I pretty much thought if in the one hand that goes to a flop and he makes a set/straight then fuck it that is my luck and called after 1 second. I will probably just continue to play 600/1k 6max mainly and mix in some higher games if I get a good seat/game, well see how it all goes. Almost out of the negative on PTR finally to, very happy about that.
Personal Life
I took a trip up to LA last weekend with petteytheft to go to a Laker game on Easter and to visit the Hollywood Mansion that gomukyaself, fantasticow, jmoney10587, sethsethseth, and UCIpitcher are living at. We stayed there on Saturday and hung out with them and I got to sweat gomuk playing a session of high stakes games, defintly was a great learning experience for me and made dealing with all the LA traffic worth it. On sunday me, pettey, gomuk and ariolis30 went to the Lakers vs Spurs game! Thanks to Ariolis30 and his 4.6 million PTR hands for getting us the tickets. I've talked to Ariolis a bunch online and he is just nothing like you would imagine an NL100 SNE who has top 5 most hands played on Stars to be. Had a pretty fun time and it was cool to see LA for the first time in my life, even though most of it was pretty ghetto. Here are a few pics
I took care of everything last week in regards to my new roommate moving in and he should be here on May 1st. Hopefully we get along and get to have some fun out here in the San Diego summer. My workouts have been going really well the past month and I am seeing some real improvements to my appearance/stregnth! I finally learned how to cook chicken on the stove lol so I have been eating that for my meals rather then Macdondalds/Burger Kang which is what I am accustomed to eating these days. I also have my first meeting with a personal trainer I met next week which I am excited about. I don't think I really need one but it can't be a bad thing.
As far as the dating scene for me goes right now, I actually met someone I think I might like. She is really good looking, awesome bod, has good career, lives close but..................................she has 2 kids depending on how you look at it. Im still not to sure how I feel about it but they are actually pretty fun to hang out with and play video games against, even though they crush me at them. Her kids are 9 and 6 and she is younger then me...... lol
Don't really have much else to say right now, going to Padres opening day next week and plan on going to a bunch of there games since the stadium is close.
I'm going to continue to 15 table the $6.6 6max sngs for the remainder of the month. Hopefully after expenses I will have a big enough bankroll to 15 table the $13 6max sngs and party a bit more.
edit: oh and i recently had the best sex ever with a hot professional motor show dancer :D + she likes to swallow so i'm def down to booty call her now and again.
Episode 1 of season two up on pokertube. Both Jeans from 2+2 (jeans89 or something on prima among other nicks?) and LostLucky (also highish stakes player on prima) along with a couple of more familiar names such as Eric Liu, that tall Norwegian from HSP, recent nutcase Andy black and Leo Margret also plays.
50/100€ blinds so that's fun. Havn't watched it all yet but I'm sure it'll be fun enough.
I have spent the last 2 days drunk which has delayed the super-saving-to-move-to-new-house-grind a bit. Today was weird; it felt like nothing was really working out and I assumed until my little run at the end that I had been breakeven, so seeing the graph was a nice surprise. There's always that red line when the blue one won't obey! I'm above my target minimum rate of 4ptbb/100 so all is gravy so far...
edit: also, I got caught on a 200bb bluff and I managed not to tilt. It helped that the guy immediately thought I was a mentalist and hunted me on all my tables and started paying me off hardcore. Got about 150bb back off him super thin value betting pretty quick, so it was only about 50bb of annoyance in my mind!
I'm GoTuNk and i've played bw for last 8-10 years; I started playing poker seriously last december.
I'm starting this blog cause there's one thing I need, and it's called discipline.
I want to achieve 3 things this year:
-Aprove all courses at my business university
-Become a reg in nl200 at least, by december.
-Stop eating crap so I can finally cut bodybat from 16.5% to 10-12% (I weight 75kg) and achieve strength goals such as body weight snatch, front lever pull ups (currently working on em) and new future performance goals.
So whenever I do something really positive or negative (tilt, good laydown, eat junk food, hold front lever position) in regards of my goals i'm posting em here.
Some pics now since u bothered to read up to here:
Results are nice imo.
slow but steady profits and a game that u can robot once u figured out your push/calling ranges.
pretty sure i beat them 18man 6.50 SNGs now after i played 175 of them.
ofc the sample size is still small but its just too obvious which mistakes my opponents do all the time
will probably grind them out for the rest of the month
before i move up
lots of guys advice to not play the 18mans but stick to 45mans ?
are the 45ones really so much more profitable ?
I cashed out a bit from FTP and decided to re-deposit some of it this morning. I transferred the money onto my credit card and make the deposit on the site. FTP declines it for some reason so I go check to make sure I put it on my CC and the money is gone.
WTF they declined by transaction but took my money? Anyone else had experience with this? Bahhhh waiting for support bawwwww post
