YouTube Video Whore by JonnyCosMo, January 02

So I finally got a youtube account for myself today, mainly because I have a bunch of short video clips I took with my camera this past year. Here are a couple of them... nothing too interesting.

TwistedEcho Can Juggle! - This was in Vegas, Echo was demonstrating his gosu juggling skills. Then Mango runs into him and ruins it.

Bellagio Fountain Show - Taken from the back of Shintaro during the WPT Championships.

San Diego Labor Day Riot - This is the reason why we have an alcohol ban on our beaches now... there were thousands of drunks college kids throwing shit at the cops. Not so smart

Its Me! - My best friend was fucking around with my camera and decided to take this dumb video clip of me. I'm drunk at it's 4am... obv I'm not going to be doing much.

Frustrated with myself by k2o4, January 02

Had a great start to my session today and got up 4 buyins very quickly, but then donked it off at the end. I keep calling down in bad spots or pushing it all in on bluffs that fail horrendously. I'm getting owned by people who slowplay is what it comes down to. Damn. Was going through hands to post but got frustrated and didn't finish putting em all together. Here's the ones I got together:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/350551 - not sure how to handle this turn. should I have raised the flop? Calling the flop allows AK to hit on the turn. Guy was TAG so I figured he would triple barrell AA/KK/AQ, and if AK hit on the turn he'd keep betting. JJ he'd slow down on the turn and fold to a turn bet, and he might fold AA/KK to a turn bet after his check there. I dunno, just felt like a good spot to keep calling, but not sure if it was.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/350557 - check behind on this turn? Then push river?

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/350558 - first raiser was kinda loose, 3bettor was TAG... do I squeeze this? do I push? Or is the fold ok?

Garrhhh!

Aggression Entry #4 by MARSHALL28, January 02

Okay so, I’ve been planning on getting out this article for a while now, and I think I finally have the time to pump it out, so what I’m basically going to be doing here is explaining, with examples, why it works, how to employ it, etc.

When I was in Vegas I sweated Daut for about 45 minutes online. He said something to me that really hit me hard, I thought about it, and realized, this is exactly the image I want at the table. What he said was “the guys on my right, I want them to fear me, I want to be in the back of their mind every time I enter a pot, because when they fear me, they are going to become uncomfortable playing against me, and when they’re uncomfortable, that’s when they make mistakes.” This wasn’t verbatim, but pretty much the gist of what he was saying. The point of it is, by inflating the pots against players in position, because they make the mistake of calling too often (or folding too often, both can be mistakes depending on the situation), you will win a ton of money.

Most players think I’m a donk calling station, or I’m just so retarded agro that I’m a terrible player. The thing about it is, I’m not afraid to go w/ a read that I have, and I’m not afraid to go broke. Some advice I’ve been giving my students lately, that I think is very important for everyone (who eventually wants to get very good) is to make a move if you think it may be a good situation. The thing is, it may not, and you may get stacked, but what’s important is that you found out the information about that situation, and you know for next time. There are so many situations out there, if you are just paying attention where you can force folds out of your opponents. You’ve just never attempted them, so you have no idea, here’s an example …

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885655

I realized that on the river, against this particular player, if I raised his blocker bet I could represent the flush, and get a fold a high percentage of the time. Obviously he’s not going to believe me every time, but the point is, it’s going to work often enough that the play will be profitable. Here’s one where it didn’t work….

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885661

In this one, I thought he had a very marginal made hand that thought I might be bluffing the K on the turn. I went a step further and recognized that he probably thinks I was bluffing the K on the turn and attempted to further cement in that bluff by jamming the river. He made an unbelievable call, and was right this time. I really think this was a lucky call, as even if I hit my 8 or 9 on the river I was making the same play, or it’s also very likely I was turning a made hand into a bluff, like a pair of 7s or 8s or whatever. The point is, because of my level of aggression, I’m getting him to call down three barrels all in w/ 4th pair. This is a great thing.

Here’s the reason why I think this is such a great play. Even if it’s negative EV at this particular point, for sake of example let’s say that he makes this call 60% of the time, meaning I only win the pot 40% of the time. The point is, I’m a good enough player to look at the information I received from this hand, I’m going to take into account how this particular player is going to be adjusting to my play in the future, and I’m going to use all of this information to make FAR FAR more positive EV plays against him, as well as others paying attention at the table in the future. As I’m sure you can see here, this style of play is extremely high variance, and I constantly have sessions where I’m down 5 buy ins, then win 2 buy ins back, then lose another 4, then win 5, then lose another 4, and finish up like 4 or 5 buy ins on the session. This in particular happened last night, and it does happen pretty often. It’s also why my WTSD is so high, it’s because I’m getting it in so light so often.

This brings me to the point about the difference in a cooler the way I play to a difference in a cooler the way a tight player plays. For a tight player, a cooler might be a set under set, or two pair versus a set, or an overpair versus a set. However, for me, a cooler is going to look MUCH more like something like this….

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885674

Or like this …

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885395

Or this…

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885400

The purpose of showing you these is because I end up getting the money in so light against a lot of players, that when I do happen to make top pair, in my mind it’s pretty much the nuts. Based on the fact that I’m bluffing so often and value betting so thinly against players, they are going to sit there and think that their 2nd pair is good against me when I’m betting top pair three streets all in for value (sometimes worse than top pair if I have a specific read on a villain). This is something I do constantly, and a very big reason for why my winrate is so high.

Now like I said, a lot of people think I’m nuts or I’m just flat out a bad player when they see the types of hands that I show down in certain situations (BUT THIS IS GREAT FOR MY IMAGE!!), because I know how people are going to react to me, and I know how to react to them.

Because I force myself into these types of situations constantly, I have gotten pretty decent at figuring out when I’m good and when I’m not…. Here’s a few examples…

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885715

This is 100% for value against this player, what I was attempting to do was force him to jam on me w/ Ace high or something worse because this is a flop that just looks like I'm going to be bluffing really often. I’m just raising too many pots for them to think I hit this board. I'd actually play any pair this way. This is how I get people to constantly put the money in w/ A high or other very weak hands. I’ll give a few more examples….

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885732

Here's a spot where I get him to get it in against me for 200bb w/ just TPTK.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885738

People like to claim that I just run good and am really lucky, but how many of you are getting all in value here?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885491

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885753

If the river hadn't come a 3 here, I was betting it for value, as I felt a 3 and ace high were a huge portion of his range. He called me an idiot afterwards. lol.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885499

It’s important to manipulate the perception your villain is going to have of your play, for example, certain players are going to think an all in jam looks like a draw (most do until they know you will do otherwise), so it’s usually best to play a strong hand like this on a draw heavy board by just jamming, I’ll often do this w/ sets and overpairs also, not just top pair. Here’s an example where I knew a villain would interpret a jam as very weak, but a small raise as very strong, so what I did was a checkminraise…

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1885514

I actually think villain very likely folded a decent sized overpair here, or if he didn’t happen to hold one in this spot that he would fold a decent sized overpair.

Okay so, there’s one other concept that is really important to understand with this style, and it has a lot to do w/ double barreling in certain situations where you have high implied odds. I don’t know anyone that’s every articulated it before, I’ve never read it anywhere and never heard anyone explain it, so I’m gonna do my best…

It’s like, lets say you’ve opened from the SB and been called by the BB, you are holding like 78o and the flop comes J64r, you’ve flopped a gutshot and you go to c-bet. Villain calls your c-bet, the turn card is a 9, making you an open ended straight draw. This is a spot where I love to double barrel, obviously on the surface this looks just like a standard double barrel, but let’s think about it from a different perspective. When you are firing this second barrel here (which should be near pot sized), you are putting villain in a pretty difficult spot considering he could have been calling the flop w/ a pr of 7s, 8s, Ts, a weak J, even a somewhat strong J like a JT, they are going to have trouble calling the second barrel, you’ll actually find that they fold a pretty decent portion of the time (more often than you’d expect—even w/ a crazy image). But the thing about it is, if their hand is strong enough to call this second barrel, we will have accomplished two things—one, we’ve established that villain has a pretty strong hand in this spot, and two, we’ve built ourselves a good sized pot w/ a fairly decent draw. Now let’s say you hit your draw on the river. By building the pot on the flop and the turn, you’ve created a situation where you have very high implied odds to win a big bet on the river (since river bets are usually the largest in size). If his hand was good enough to call a pot sized bet on the flop and turn, he’s going to almost feel committed to calling the 3rd barrel on the river. At this point, you can use your discretion if you miss, or if say an overcard comes that you can represent, like a Q, K, or A. What you need to do is experiment w/ betting sizes to see how certain players interpret certain types of bets. Some are going to look at a bet that looks like a value bet and think it’s a bluff, others are going to look at huge bets and just be too scared to call, or might be more inclined to call because they think you’re bluffing. This is something you learn w/ experience, and by constantly getting yourselves in these situations.

The great thing about playing this way is that it makes your opponent play out of his comfort zone. You are in your comfort zone because you play large pots all the time and are comfortable w/ losing a stack or two if it happens to happen. Your opponents for the most part won’t be. This is what’s going to cause them to make mistakes. And the bigger the pot is against these weaker opponents, necessarily, the mistakes they make will be bigger ones.

These types of play work much, much better in position, I just chose a random example for this particular hand, but when you are able to do this to someone who is out of position, and to just continue to hammer down on them, it becomes very easy to start putting your opponents on hands and very easy to extract value w/ hands as weak as second or even third pair. I posted a hand not long ago where I bet the turn and called all in for value w/ AJ high. These types of things are possible; you just have to open your mind and start thinking of ways of being creative. You’ll never learn anything if you just sit there and tag it up and never force the issue or “make any mistakes” … IMO if you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t playing good poker. If you see me posting advice in the hand forums, I’m usually saying all in and celebrate, or bet all three streets for value. These reasons I’ve articulated in this article are exactly why I advocate what I do.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed it. If you have any questions feel free to post comments. I’m heading out of town tomorrow for PCA I’ll be there until the 11th or 12th, not quite sure.

GL,
Marshall28

Hello Everyone by rhino9907, January 02

Hi everyone, this is my first blog post. I've been reading and lurking on LP for probably a year or so now after seeing someone with an LP avatar on stars. I have been playing online poker for going on 4 years now, I first began playing my first year of lawschool on the playmoney tables at stars. Before long I deposited $50 bucks and got started. I ended up losing all that, and more, I think around like $200 in the next year or so. I basically just donked around at low NL games and SNGs with a few MTTs mixed in. I read some books, played quite a bit in small homegames, but basically sucked at poker, although, like most poker players, thought I was real good.

After a couple of years of being a donkey, I began to realize that I was one, and decided to really focus on my game. I deposited another $50 onto stars and began the grind. I basically played break even for over a year, getting my $50 up to $300 or so before losing most of it back and just had a big rollercoaster for a long time. Eventually, about 4 months ago, I went completely busto for the first time in two years online. I lost all my money on stars, full tilt and cake poker, which was all like $300 combined. I decided then that I was done with online poker as I was on a horrible run of cards that just felt like I could never win even when I got it in 90% to win. So I gave it up for a couple of months.

Eventually, I got bored and re-downloaded and began with some play money and freerolls on stars. I then realized that maybe I had some rakeback money on Cake that I didnt get before going busto, so I downloaded it and checked it out, and sure enough, $3.30 from rakeback like 3 months before. So, I took my $3.30 and hit the .04/.08 fix limit tables. I ground it up to like $5 and decided to try a $1 30 person SNG. I ended up winning that for like 12 bucks or something and went to a 4NL table. I caught a great run of cards there and ended up building up to around $50 again. I then started playing 4 tables of 4NL and mixing in a few MTTs as well. One night I registered for the $2K guaranteed tournament, even though it was $5 to play and I only had about $40 in my account. I ended up running super hot, and took 2nd in that for like $300! Now I was really back in the game, and really began grinding.

I moved up to 10NL playing 4 tables at all times, and also kept with some MTTs on the side too. I was winning at 10NL, and then satellited into the $50k guaranteed through a $5 satellite. I played the 50k and cashed in that for another $165. I was now on a roll and had over $500, probably the most I've ever had playing online poker. I then moved to 20NL and was still running good and playing some of the best poker I've ever played. I felt like everything just sort of clicked. I began posting some hands on 2+2 and some other forums and getting advice and felt that my game was really starting to take shape. That basically brings us to now. I'm still playing 20NL on cake and throwing in some MTTs also. Most recently, last week I again satted into the 50k guarantee (two tickets in two trys!) and again cashed in that for 50th place for $235. Another big bankroll booster! However, I got screwed cause I had AA when the site went down and they ended up cancelling the hand after I got someone all in with KQ. Cake did end up doing the right thing and refunding my entry fee as well for a nice score of almost $350 total since I had satted in.

I've also setup an epassporte account and transferred some of my roll from cake to stars, although they have still been hating me, and on my first day back I lost with AA 9 times! So I am sticking to cake for the time being, but still playing some MTTs on stars just looking for a big score. Eventually, I plan to move the majority of my roll to a site where I can use Pokertracker and all that good stuff as I realize tracking my results is very important for continuing to improve and move up, but for now, the games on Cake are just too good to pass up!

So, I guess I started this blog just to keep up with my own progress, keep myself focused and try to keep myself off tilt. I do tend to post a lot of bad beat hands and what not on some forums I frequent, so I will try and keep from doing that too much in this blog, although I feel posting them and getting them out there keeps me from tilting over them, so there may be some posted here as well.

Anyway...thats my poker story. I still continue to play in some home games now and again, and also hit up the casinos some as well. I have been running really badly live though, so havent been playing much lately, but you can expect some live updates as well. So that's that for my poker career. Hopefully I will keep this updated so everyone can following along as I continue to move up the ladder.

My goals for 2008 are pretty much as follows:
-Continue to grind and move up stakes. I hope to be at 50NL within the next 3-4 months.
-Play at least 10k hands per month. This probably doesnt seem like much to most people, but with a full time job that keeps me busy enough, it's quite a few for me. Hopefully I can do more, but this is the minimum I'd like to play.
-Continue to post hand histories and get advice so that I can plug the leaks in my game. I know I have several, and the guys on 2+2 really gave me good advice and helped me to plug a lot so far. I haven't been very good about continuing to post on there the past couple months though, so I want to get back to that.
-Get a large enough bankroll to spread it around to several sites without feeling like I am spreading it too thin, so that I can get pokertracker and really analyze my play and my progress.
-Win an MTT...I have never actually taken one down, in spite of several deep runs, so I want to do that sometime in the next few months as well. I know it will happen if I keep going deep like I have been lately.

2008 - what do i really do ??? help! by devddd, January 02

Okay. Now I have just sepent some time reading other peoples blogs, and I think it is time i start my own.

I have been playing poker for about 2 and a half years. The problem is that I have never been able to build a bankroll through continuos solid play. I usually end up blowing multiple buy ins from some bad beats which are then followed by marginal situations which are relatively easy folds when i reflect. Then if i continue to play I will steam and move up stakes and lose even more, until all i have is gone. I dont know what I can do to make myself a profitable online player. 25NL is just too boring and the seems pointless. 50NL is where I play most of my hands and if i can improve my play I think I can be profitable, but the grind just seems so unapealling.

100NL is what suits me & ideally if i could somehow discipline myself to play shorter sessions and play less hours per week it would be great. I just don't know IF i can do this.

I also play live full ring $2/3 blinds at my local casino. I find that I do really well because I want to show people I am a good player and I play very tight. Mind you, my online play has been about 22/13, but after speaking to a friend i have tried to reduce it to about 14/12, no limping & being very aggressive PF.

I guess I am just lost right now & fed up with losing online. Do i just call it quits and continue playing live? Do I recognise that there is a pattern reoccuring, which is i buy in, do well - make profit, then play ultra long sessions, and end up donking money away.

I know how i should be playing, but I don't know if i have the discipline to play like this online, as I have never proven myself online as i have live. Mind you, live is so much easier to win big pots etc.

Arghhh. Another thing is.. i have finished study and want to begin a career & dont have the time to be grinding for hours online.. it has been making my quality of life suffer & i am lucky to still have the job i worked while i studied as the money is quite good and hours really suit part time poker.

If i can limit myself to 2 night at the casino, i'd be really pleased, and I know I can make $200-$400 on average a week here, nothing much - but socially enjoyable as well as the game i love.
But once i throw online into the mix, i am unsure how i will go... Am I destined for failure? Should i just go with my recognition of the fact that me even writing all of this shows just how likely i am to fail?

I feel like i am so close to being a profitable player online, yet disciplinary issues have me so far and possibly doomed for failure. Everytime I have a monster I dont get paid off, im too aggressive with AA/KK PF, and i am committing too many chips with TPPK. I could make this post so long.... but what will it really achieve.

At the moment I am stumpped for ideas and will probably continue playing 2/3NL at the cas live & might deposit to play 50NL in the future.

I have been playing on PS/ Interpoker and just signed to pacific recently.

Your input / ideas / concerns (lol) / feedback are valued and will be considered with attention and thought.

Kind regards
& looking forward to seeing where things lead from here on in 2008. Peace.

Continuing the grind by jchanhm, January 02

So these days when I'm bored I hop on stars or party and just 3 or 4 table for an hour or two. Since last week, something has just clicked and I'm playing really well, winning a lot when I win and losing less when I get sucked out on. I always try to find a short handed game (even on party which doesn't have 10NL 6max tables), since I'm trying out a more aggressive style that works best short handed.

Current rolls:
Party: 80.54
Stars: 167.65

I'm really happy with my party roll, since It's up from the free $15 bonus that I got on the 22nd or so. It would be at $130, but I lost $50 trying out $25NL, one buy-in because I was adjusting to the limit (they're more aggressive and they fold even less than 10NL) and one buy-in from a sick cooler flopped set vs gutshot straight that called two reraises on the flop and turn and hit on the river. Each time I donked off a buyin at 25NL, I multi-tabled at 5 or 10NL and made back the $25 in less than two hours. So I figure that until I have a good enough bankroll to comfortably play at the limit, I'll just continue playing 10NL under-rolled on party, since it's just so easy.

I don't really care if I go broke on party, so I just play on there when I feel like playing poker or have a 'bad feeling', or don't have enough time to really play a full session. So far the fish have been biting really nicely.

Hand 1: I really don't know
Hand 2: Because gutshot + ace = nuts, apparently
Hand 3: 47o is a good hand, really

I think one of the biggest reasons why absolutely nobody at 10NL gives me any credit is because I raise almost everything to 4bb preflop, and cont-bet 90% of the time. I can do this because they're just so weak that I can stay at even money just from the amount of times that they fold to my cont bets. But I tighten up a lot post-flop, when the bets get big, and they're still putting me on air when I'm making half-buyin size bets.

Anyways, I've gotten pretty confident with this playstyle, so I've started using on Stars, since it wins large pots faster than nitting it up full-ring. I'm playing at 5NL on Stars until I reach 200$, and then I'll try out 10NL. If I'm lucky, my party roll will zoom up super fast, while my stars roll will steadily increase.

Just two hands to end the post:

Hand 4: Played this tonight. I almost timed out trying to decide whether to call his shove on the river, but my gut told me he plays AK exactly like this too.

Hand 5: I have no words for this.

Mediocrity by Svenman87, January 01

I've got the college bug >_<

if u read my early blog I write about dropping out, but I've never wanted to go back anymore than I do right now. ITS ONLY JANUARY >_<

fuck so long away.
tired of this FT grind knowing I can do 100x better in 10 years.

Poker is kinda meh. breakeven days after breakeven days. frustrating but I know if I stick to it I'll see a turnaround soon enough.

Goals for 2008
-Go To College [Carthage or Mankato]
-Have 20k saved up for college [by the last day I work]
-Have 8k in my stars account [by the end of the year]
-STUDY MY ASS OFF AND TRY FOR ONCE IN MY FUCKING LIFE

I'm tired of mediocrity. I'm tired of being tired. If I don't do well this year in college... I really don't know what'd I would do.

I have great people around me in my life and for whatever reason I fuck up every time I need to take control and live up to what I hear I can be, and I know I can be.

Didn't mean to drag this out but ya...
<3 LP
Hope 2008 goes a lot better than 2007.

day 1 by Ibsu Bai Hui, January 01

kingking vs aceace 3 times in 3400 hands for $-144 over 22 dealt finishing $-171 overall with another $-62 from rake (??? is rake included in the Amount Won in pokertracker or is it treated separately???) and $+107 from bonus. sklansky bucks = 0 . actually my balance is $-192 *shrug* . bonus processes tomorrow so $-85 = less than 2 buyin swing = i should stfu

software.... CDpoker (ipoker network) ... it´s annoying and i think i´m going to misclick all the time (but i dont) but it could be a lot worse so can´t complain -__-

the one thing that REALLY pisses me off is that there are no good tables. like 75% of players on 50nl sit with stacks of 25 or less (full ring). most tables it´s you and 2 others vs 7 $10 stacks, and they seem to be mostly campers. my vpip is 9% =@

bonus... seems to be pretty awesome... but they only process whatever you´ve unlocked on wednesdays... so i´ll probably have to wait another week to get the other half of it out since i cba to play anymore now it´s 2am

oh yeah it really sucks that i need to fucking (go outside to) smoke =@

http://img14.imagevenue.com/loc870/th_38149_day1_122_870lo.JPG

actually if you´re really looking for a way to feel better about 3500 hands, if you take away 2 of those kk vs aas then ev is actually $+75 or about 4.4bb/100 (i think) which isn´t so bad at all now is it

i´m going to watch avp2 now.
