| | UFC Fight Night by KeanuReaver, April 02
Very good card, especially for a free card. Unfortunately, I think a couple terrible stoppage's overshadowed an otherwise great event. Both times it was Steve Mazzagatti jumping in early too, if I were Joe Silva I'd have a good talking with the guy. I understand the whole logic of erring on the side of caution but these guys are fighters, part of being a fighter is having these difficult struggles and overcoming them...not giving the chance to overcome is a tremendous disrespect to them. I really feel for both houston and karo. Anyway, I'm gonna comment on the fights I saw.
James Irvin vs Houston Alexander: Irvin by KO 1st round.
personally I felt houston was gonna wreck irvin but right at the gong irvin comes in with a superman punch that floors alexander. irvin follows up with a couple shots on the ground and mazzagatti jumps in. in terms of early stoppage's this one wasn't that bad but even still alexander might have been rocked but he wasn't out, give him an extra couple seconds and see if he can recover or at least tie irvin up long enough to recover. this stoppage annoyed me not because alexander was alright, but because he wasn't given a chance to recover...he hit the ground and irvin manages to get off 3 punches, only 1 of which landing relatively cleanly, and the fight was over.
Kurt Pellegrino vs Nathan Diaz: Diaz by sub 2nd round
to me, this was a very interesting fight. Pellegrino is the superior all around grappler of the two, but diaz has the superior all around submission game. the blueprint for pellegrino winning this fight was obvious, get the takedowns and control nate on the ground. look to force superior positions and punish nate when you get into those positions...and above all else, don't take any unnecessary risks. i really felt if pellegrino would do that he would pick up a very dominating win and in the first round thats exactly what he did. i don't know if it was the pressure of the fight or just bad gameplanning, but he abandoned that in the second round, capped off when he had a single leg on nate diaz and instead of dragging him to the ground while controlling that hip or even transitioning into a double leg he decides to pick him up and slam him. that lead immediately into a triangle from diaz and pellegrino losing another fight he easily could have won.
Tim Boetsch vs Matt Hamill: Hamill by TKO 2nd round
I don't really know much about boetsch except for the fact he dominated the biggest can in the ufc today: david heath. The two are very similar with hamill being the superior wrestler and superior athlete while boetsch has the superior striking. I thought boetsch was doing exceptionally well exploiting the fact that hamill likes to put his head down in close quarters, not only with knees but also with uppercuts...i think had one of those uppercuts from boetsch hit clean hamill would still be asleep. One of those knees practically tore half of hamill's lip off, one of my biggest fears when i got my lip pierced was getting into a fight with some guy and him ripping it out and man it did not look pretty in this fight. In any case, after such a great first round from Boetsch, he decides to pull a pellegrino and do the exact opposite thing he should have done. why would anyone would shoot in on someone as powerful, technical, and overwhelming as matt hamill? hamill stuffs it, pins boetsch against the cage, and just mauls him until the ref stops it.
Thiago Alves vs Karo Parisyan: Alves by TKO 2nd round
anyone that's a fan of mma was really looking forward to this fight. both guys are very exciting, very good all around, and very young. first round saw alves fighting pretty tentatively while karo fought aggressively landing with some good strikes and taking the fight to the ground. was definitely a good round for karo but he really never managed to do any significant damage on Alves. Alves came out in the second round much more aggressively and his superior striking started to take over. karo made a mistake in ducking his head and ate a knee for his troubles. he was floored but not out and honestly i don't know which person jumped on him first, mazzagatti or alves. he was definitely hurt but he wasn't out, and alves wasn't even able to land any clean follow up shots before mazzagatti stopped the fight. this stoppage was just terrible as not only was karo not given a chance to recover, but he wasn't even that rocked to begin with...right after the stoppage he hopped right up. very very unlucky for karo and i do think he would have been able to pull guard and recover, as fans we were deprived of probably another round or so of a very good matchup.
Anthony Johnson vs Tommy Spear: Johnson by utter annihilation 1st round
This fight started innocently enough, both fighters feeling eachother out with spear looking for opportunities to take the fight to the ground. then, as spear shoots in, he eats a kick from johnson and boy did the shit hit the fan for the country boy spear. every time spear did anything he was eating strikes for it. stand up? here's some punches. close in? here's some knees. try a takedown? here's some more punches. eventually the accumulated damage had spear all but out and against the cage and then johnson hit him with an absolutely brutal cross that knocked spear out cold. just complete domination from johnson, really impressive.
Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard: Maynard by UD (30-27x3)
two fighters, four first names. I think this fight can be summed up pretty easily by maynards post fight comments. maynard was just so much bigger than edgar that maynard was able to bully edgar and control the fight from start to finish. otherwise, it was a very close fight despite what the judges scores may suggest. as is typical for an edgar fight, the wrestling displays were top notch and the striking wasn't bad either. in the end it was just maynard's size and power that enabled him to control the fight.
Joe Lauzon vs Kenny Florian: Florian by TKO 2nd round
Excellent first round! both came out blazing and lauzon was able to secure the first takedown. there, florian landed some vicious elbows that dean thought weren't legal as one of the elbows opened up a cut on the back of lauzons head. lauzon would get it treated and the fight would be restarted standing for some reason -- i thought after the genki sudo bang ludwig fiasco that any time a doctors stoppage occurs the fight has to be restarted in the same position. in any case after the restart they would both both again come out full of energy with lauzon finding himself on top again but made a pretty huge mistake in going for a kneebar, then a heelhook. as a general rule, don't try to force a leg lock on a bjj practitioner...they have so much strength and flexibility in their legs that even a perfectly sunk sub isn't always going to get the tap (memories of barnetts kneebar on nog comes to mind. a 260 pound man that has been practicing subs for most of his life wasn't able to get a tap from a bjj practitioner in nog even despite it being perfectly locked in). this ended up burning lauzon out and florian took advantage in the second round maintaining mount and raining down punches for a full minute before the fight was finally stopped. steve mazzagatti may want to take a look at herb dean's reffing in this fight, lauzon was in a bad situation and was hurt and very winded but dean gave him every chance in the world to try and struggle out of the situation and only when it was clear that lauzon was not able to make it back did he finally stop the fight. did he die in the ring? or suffer tremendous brain damage or some career ending injury? no. but even though he was still fine and fully cognizant, he had no complaints. he was given a chance to succeed through the struggle and even though he wasn't able to, it's all he can ask for. neither karo nor houston was given that same chance which is both a tremendous disrespect to the fighters and also a huge loss for us as fans.
my write up is probably pretty shitty because im still a little drunk, but oh well, it was a great event and a lot of fun matchups.

| | Biggest Downsing of a Micro Players Life by SugoGosu, April 02
So, I have been in the biggest downswing at poker right now. In the past 2 weeks I have dropped maybe 1/2 of my BR due to a huge series of bad beats. I thought it was bad before, but now it is just ridiculous. Just some examples of what I'm getting at
I'm dealt 1010 flop comes 10 J 2. kid shoves with 22, instacall, hits 2 on river.
I'm dealt AA allin preflop vs 78s hits straight flush
A2 in the button, hit straight flush on flop, called by higher straight flush
AQ flop AAQ beat by AK with K on river
Q10o on QQ10 villian hits royal flush
then like 100000 KK vs AA allins, this is just getting stupid. I'm thinking about taking a break until my curse goes away.

| | i can't play AA KK QQ AK worth a damn? by rockman255, April 02
nobody should actually read this, but maybe if they do, they can give me some brief advice on how not to donk off all of my money when i have big hole cards.
ive linked the vast majority of losing hands from the day, i guess it gets kind of ugly near the bottom when i bluff two hands for an entire stack. ugh
and then theres a few winners and even a royal flush at the bottom
maybe its therapeutic for me to look at all these hands and just get it over with and move on. i think its been a rough 5000 hands today.

| | tripaments by whamm!, April 02
The whole trip was fun and it kinda destressed me a bit, didnt think about poker the whole time at all. also didnt bring my laptop coz i heard that the whole island might not have internet. taking a vacation def helps better than moving down stakes or taking breaks and always seeing the computer and internet. met an american UB player there saying he was a high stakes player at UB,kept asking what his nick was and it didnt ring a bell at all, asked him if he had a a cr or deucescracked membership and about ptracker and pokerace, stuff even noobs know, he didnt have a clue LOL standart. its good that my friend stole his to-go ham and cheese sandwiches just for lying to us lolol
poker-wise my br has jumped from 750 to 1500 in a week playing mostly 25nl then moved up aggressively at 20bi to 50nl and so far its still swingy but im beginning to pwn 50nl as well, which is good coz ive never ran good at this limit at stars, when i reach 2200, ill be taking my shot at 100nl again prolly 18 tabling, just move down if i drop 4bi.
i wanna reach 200nl by june so baaad and although my last cashout hurt my roll a bit, i feel this time im def more aggressive with br management, since ive already been to 100nl comfortably before, and yes, fattening up too much on one limit really does retard one's progress, coz you can never really be to safe with br management once paranoia sets in and the money aspect gets to you. imho, 400nl is the limit where one should really have like 50bi or more coz of all the good players that play there. i still have around 4k of my roll in the bank which i plan to redeposit to moneybookers tomorrow just in case i wanna jump into 100nl instead of waiting more. ill just keep it there.
going on a surfing trip with women without getting laid is like getting set with your slowplayed jj in position and getting zero action - it hurts lol
gtg and grind some more peace guys and goodluck

| | March was ok =] by sTrAtO, April 02
Last month I played a very low volume of hands and got good results in some aspects.
I roughly played 18K hands this month and barely mantained my Platinum Star status (10200VPPs). After winning some buyins at my tourney scores, I gave NL400 a real shot and even though I didn't get good results, I can say that I improved my game a lot, enough to destroy NL200. NL400 is way way harder than NL200 so I'm done with NL400 at least for April. Going to play NL200 6max and nothing else. In the last 2 days of March, I played about 5-6K hands and won $2.2K, so its cool
I also played some NL600 hands but left when my KK got cracked by A8s in a QJx, allin on flop, guy hit a flush. Standard.
So as for cash games, I'm really happy with my results cause my level has increased thanks to my NL400 experience.
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9186/marchptgu8.jpg
In tourneys I did good this month. Could have done better at the Sunday Warm-up last week but my mom put me on super tilt when we were down to the last 2 tables and totally lost control of myself and I made a lot of mistakes when I had an amazing stack. She just didn't understand the situation that winning $120K was a very huge possibility. For her it was better to clean the fucking bathroom that was accidentally flooded (I don't know why) when we were sleeping. When we woke up it was flooded, lucky us with clean water. Anyway, Fuck bathroom problems and thanks mom for making me lose my chance to win $120k...
Here is my OPR profile of March.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/6831/marchoprld4.jpg
Winnings Summary
Cash games: ($833)
Tournaments: $11354
LAPT satellites: around ($250)
So as for march, I won a total of $10271~

| | 25NL first week... by collegesucks, April 02
http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/a4ec94080b45ef720a954b4964ad36b3.jpg
PT3 is awesome i love it! and it's free right now if you weren't aware...
lol things went ok. i thought the tables were a lot softer than 10NL like a lot of people said but yeah definitely the swings are bigger and takes some getting used to. i guess it's the effect of playing a 20bi rule as a guy who just started out playing a few months ago.
last couple hundred hands were as sick as they come... losing AA vs. J9 (turns a gutshot straight on a 9-hi flop, where he open shoved -__-;; ), KK vs. AK, 2 KK vs. AA, QQ vs KT, flush vs. boat, set vs. oversets. i tried 10 tabling cascade view and it worked out great (not being results-oriented at all, obv). i think i can make a lot of the standard plays mechanically and i can always drag action tables out to the side (<- an effective tip from kim).
one more bad session like this and im back down to 10NL T__T but i'd rather shortstack 1knl than go back, srsly...
started off the session with this hand:

hahaha FU BITCH your ass got trapped trying to save itself!
he got owned so bad and he knows it hahahahaha... i love putting my mouse over the call button and repeatedly clicking it before it even appears because for some reason when you do that, they ALWAYS shove and you NEVER lose. i mean it's like the easiest call ever but how do you just know with your entire being that he's going to shove? maybe the clicking induces it.
lololol... not really a brag just want to share or express that feeling somehow. i'm sure a lot of people can identify with it.
and then of course, the session went to shit... why is it that i always play so much better at the beginning of the session than maybe an hour or two into it?
some late night shin ramen will cheer me up

| | Exams !!!!! by mrpav.com, April 01
So now its time to study for exams, boo!! I'm almost done with the nursing year, just 2 more weeks and then exams. My month was so so in February, so we shall hope April comes with better outcomes. Got a new stars avatar which i'm proud of, so no more of the Marylin Manson one for a while.
