Month --

-15bi's, 10bi's under expectation. Believe it or not I was so soulcrushed earlier today that I was ranting @ Panorama about seriously just cold turkey quitting the game - even though my brain understands that a 15k hand sample is literally nothing and doesn't mean anything.... (except for the very real possibility that I plain suck)

I was definitely playing pretty bad @ the beginning (albeit also running megabad), but of late I'm honestly confused what is going on.

I'm not sure whether I'm playing well or poorly; the fact that I've "learned" to c/f certain rivers depending on villain action "should" be +EV decisions, yet the fact that I have no confirmation of this just messes with my mind. The nonstop coolers, suckouts, setups, and ESPECIALLY villains hitting draws (or 2p, trips, etc) when I manage the pot based on what I believe to be their range is making me doubt my ingame decisions right now.

I wish I knew whether or not I'm actually playing well, that's really all I ask at this point. Worse is the fact that I 4-8 table (actually recommitted to playing only 4 now), so volume is low, variance is high, and it causes even more confusion over the reliability of my percieved results thus far. And when I tilt-increase my tablecount, robot mode ensues and ofc it's a disaster b/c Uptown-robot is a spewtardcallingstation catastrophe lol.

Conveniently I'm off of a 1 week vacation so hopefully clearing my head off in some remote island will help when I get back.

Cheers LP, run 10000x better than me plz X__X

whine graph!
  Uptown, Aug 02 2009

totally standard but damn still hurts nonetheless

Getting a little better at "not paying off", which is by far the biggest leak I have in my game by self-diagnosis. Second leak is probably randomly bluffing off stacks, and I think my valuebetting is... at least "ok". Just want to go back to FPS-Less poker haha - NL100 doesn't need any fancy shit obv.

Meh, w/e I dont really think moving down to nl50 again will bother me too much if it comes to that.

Discipline~~ in many aspects.

'EV' decision
  Uptown, Jul 26 2009

I've been debating for several weeks now to basically discontinue "serious" efforts in poker.

The rationale is the little "spare" time I have overall and the EV from each possible use I can find for it.

While Poker certainly provides immediate monetary gains, I've come to the definitive conclusion that there are other endeavors that yield me higher returns per hour invested. And in the end, poker is about the money. So if there's something I can be doing with poker time that yields me more $$ than poker itself, the best "poker EV decision" I can make is to stop playing the game.

So instead of drilling myself with poker videos and literature and practice, I'll instead be trying to build a daily routine where I allot at least a large fraction of that time and energy to really learning investment practice. I don't desire any fancy short term "trading", but to be able to allocate my (future) wealth prudently and to be able to deceipher market reports / financial manager data, etc. I'm fortunately enough to have a career which will give me the funds to even be investing in the first place, so I may as well be devoting energy to putting it to maximum use.

I doubt I'll "quit" the game entirely, since I definitely enjoy the game more than ever - especially trying my hand at Headsup (though I honestly spewtilt way too often gah). I still want to improve, and love the feeling of gaining skill - but I can't allow myself to commit 80% of my leisure time to that anymore etc.

Can't have time for everything I guess X__X, gotta "spend" time wisely.

Part of my reason for putting this in writing is so that I can look back at the fact that I wrote this and made it public and withhold myself from playing poker at times when I'm supposed to be learning 'the other game' instead. An accountability source of sorts.

lol
  Uptown, Jul 25 2009

finally busted the biggest HU fish I've ever seen.

Limped about 30% of buttons, raised like another 3%.
Folded bb about 70% of the time whether I opened to 2xbb or 3xbb.

Folded every flop to cbet unless he had a decent draw or TP or better - would call my $1 into $1.90 then check turn and river with KK on AKx board LOLOL this is the kind of megaweaktight guy we're talking about here.

Took 480 hands and like 90 minutes to finally bust him ROFL I SUCK. Kept getting it in vs him when he would raise flop and ofc he'd have nuts every time.

Finally "figured him out" - I'd just open about 70% of buttons to 2xbb, fold to ANY 3bet, cbet flop for 1/2 pot and then immediately shut down if he did anything but fold, and since he'd only LIMP like 30% of his buttons, it was autoprofit rofl.

GOD I need to get better at this game

[Q] moving up
  Uptown, Jul 06 2009

Wanted to ask a question about what you'd do in this situation.

Suppose you are going to move up to the next stake once you have 20bi's for it. Would you allow yourself to use rakeback/bonuses for it?

Just something I've been pondering...

Poll: Use rakeback and bonuses?
(Vote): yes
(Vote): no

Thanks~

June
  Uptown, Jul 05 2009

Switched to FTP b/c I can't even reach goldstar on stars with the volume I play (lol).

Plus I never play the freerolls so even SN may be worse than FTP rb for me.

Playing NL50 6max - 4 tabling and focusing on simply improving.

Volume blows ofc, but here are results.

Will prolly be able to put in some solid hours this month though, really looking forward to it actually, as it will be the first time since March where I will potentially be able to devote myself to poker again. Along those lines, I'm about 90% certain I'll be in touch with k2o4 about coaching once he is available again (since he's left for vegas afaik). K2o4 himself would probably agree that there are far superior coaches out there, but the ROI will be pretty massive for me since the rate is low and he'll be able to provide the kind of insight I'm after to settle down into nl100 again.
