all depends on how involved you want to get. i spent about 500 on mb, ram, cpu, and psu, and 650 on a card. ill likely be buying another card for this setup too which will double the output. just really wanted to get the ball rolling with what ive got.

if you can build a computer, and have a decent amount of free time on your hands you should be all set. the only difficult part is the last step, where you have to tweak the configuration of your graphics card to maximize the output. that's probably more of an art if anything though.

i was trying to set up CPU mining on a regular computer, but if you dont have a specialized rig you mine about 1/1000th as many per day

there are two types of mining right now- sha-256 (bitcoin etc), and scrypt (litecoin). the upside of scrypt mining is that it uses GPU. if you try to do any sha mining, youll be spinning your wheels, and probably spend more on the electricity to run it than you make. scrypt is still somewhat feasible with your every day gaming pc, given that you have the right type of graphics card. if you happen to have one of the better cards, you could potentially pull in .25 lite coins a day.

Really bullish technicals right now in BTC. Last time the charts looked like this the price went up 5x over the next week or two. Decent point to plunk in a few more dollars now (at 960 bitstamp price) imo. I bought more at 900, am buying again when it breaks the old high (1163). Will probably add 25% to my position at that point barring anything crazy bad happening.

LOLOL.

Actually I want to buy a coin, but am keen to keep it offline (it will be bought with part of my poker BR, so its pretty hard earned money in several months). How can I make sure that I wont lose it if my hard disk burns out or smg like that happens?

There are paper wallets I think where you can can record stuff in writing.

Personally I'm comfortable with storing my wallet backup files on a couple of cloud websites with obfuscated file names and password protection (for the cloud web site account and also the zipping up of the wallet file).

Basically only option to safely buy btc/ltc is through wire transfers to online markets (and those are not super safe as well, unfortunately). None of them accept Skrill/Neteller as those are chargeback vulnerable.

If you want to buy for Skrill/Neteller your only chance is through someone you know is trustworthy and is willing to sell.
