Games are getting tougher, winrates lower, rakeback and vip systems are going down, basically poker got harder to beat. However, there are still players that completely crush the games and make insane money.

Yeah, now he's gonna say "all you need is motivation and a strong will to learn and develop your skills". Sounds like bullshit right?

Check this archived post from 2007 from 2+2 forum, and then take the guess who is it from:
"Ive made some posts here before, and ive met several of the members over aim conversations and the like. However, i am starting to feel like I am stuck in a hopeless situation. Every time i begin to do well, i have a huge roller coaster ride and end up broke again, ending up having to reload. Again I am down to my last 30$, and I just dont even know what to say. Its not like im out of money, but if i cant get my bankroll going, and i continue to be a marginal losing player, whats the point? (Here is something we can all agree on.)

I have Pokertracker and Gametime set up, however it really didnt end up helping me nearly as much as I anticipated. Also, and i know this is going to sound really, really, noob, (But frankly, at this point, I dont really care anymore) I cant even fathom how certain games can be "beaten". I know, im going to get laughed at, but it seems like all of the options i get every hand always result in me doing poorly. Ive played roughly 15K hands and i just dont know what to do.

Perhaps the most frustrating thing for me is, the people on this site make everything seem so incredibly easy. I dont know what to say. I struggle at micro limits and small time Sit and Go's and MTT's, and when i win its for too small an amount to offset my losses. Then i go onto this site to read and try to learn, and I just feel like im not going anywhere , like im stuck and my game isnt improving.

However, i really love the game of poker; a lot. If i didnt, I wouldnt be here today, and i wouldnt of tried to play, and lost money along the way. Maybe thats the biggest key, admitting that I am a losing player and need some help. I dont think i am a very bad player, just very marginally losing. Ive had a few just wicked beats along the way (As everyone else has as well), and compounded with what i believe is poor play, the results are amplified.

Perhaps what im asking for here, is if there is anyone here, who out of the kindness of their heart would make an attempt to help me understand bankroll issues, the way to move up, and ultimately, a fresh perception on the game. I really am willing to learn, and im certainly not a begginner in the world of poker. I just need to get my game sorted out, or Im afraid that i just need to quit this, because i cant keep losing money at this game.

Thank you guys for your time."

I think his story is the most surprising turnaround in poker. He was a breakeven masstabling low to mid-stakes reg for years and all of a sudden started crushing HU at highstakes. People were convinced it was Jungleman playing under his account (I believe he was his teacher at the time)

Peace of mind cant be bought.

His story is very weird and has been weird for a long time.

As tomson said, he was a struggling breakeven/bad reg for so many years and extremely fast, became a beast at HU

fwiw I wouldn't call him a top NL Holdem reg but a top NL HU Holdem reg.

Anyhow, story seems old but many people questionned how something that fast could of been possible, I remember people talking of unique programs back in the days that would have made this possible.

But wtv. Who knows nowadays, guys have access to stuff that simply takes every single decision for them. What if he had access to that 4-5 years in advance?

what also makes it surprising is he just doesn't seem very smart when he talks compared to guys like Sauce, Ike, Jungleman, etc. (using guys who were crushing around the time he came up, idk who the best players are now).

of course just because he sounds that way doesn't mean he's not smart, he could be smarter than all of them for all i know. but it's another thing that adds to the surprise/weirdness of his rise.

indeed, hard to go against this, but who knows.

I personally think he looks like a junkie degen but oh well, i really wonder what drug he is on 24/7 and dont tell me he isnt on anything.

Does Jungleman sound smart? Not to me honestly. Sauce aswell doesn't seem like a genius, just a certain level above average due to the (not excessively) expanded vocabulary. Ike is smart but doesn't come off as genius either.
I think they might be all around 125-135 iq (for what iq is worth, lol)

well, i think it's hard most of the time in general conversation to differentiate between 'substantially above average' and 'genius', unless there's a specific context that demands it, which rarely comes up during casual discussion. or if the genius has some eccentricity that makes it more apparent. situations where you can tell the difference between above average and average, or average and below average, are much more common. i guess my point is that most geniuses don't "sound like geniuses" most of the time they speak because the context to sound like one isn't there.

i would put it this way: if i heard each of Sauce/Ike/Jungleman talk for 15 mins without any knowledge of their poker accomplishments and had to guess their iq, i would say maybe 125+. given what i know about their poker achievements, i would say 135+, and ~150 wouldn't shock me. not that < 135 is impossible, but if i had to bet i would definitely take the over.

for Doug, without the poker i would probably think something average like 105-110. with poker obviously higher, but it's hard to say how much.

Have you seen Sauce's theory videos? I think you are putting him on a way too high pedestal and underestimating the amount of work he has put into manifesting his poker results. Also there's no way doug is far below him or jungle or ben86. Dude is brilliant in many different ways. He talks in a way where he wants to come off as friendly as he can and easily be understood by everyone but that doesn't make him average.

i haven't seen any of their poker training videos (well, it's possible i did at some point and forgot). my view is more from listening to them on different interviews and podcasts. and also reading their posts on 2+2, but i guess that doesn't count as talking.

Sounds too much like a "if you set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything you want in the world!" type of post to me. An unusually talented guy who has had a slow start in something he now excels at is no evidence that people can get to his level if they persist.

Yup, Ivey was working at a call center to fund his pilgrimages to Atlantic City and occasionally sleeping under bridges when he missed the last bus. 1 in 20 billion are going to be as good as Ivey at poker?

Brad Pitt had $500 to his name when he moved out to LA and worked as a chicken mascot. He is Brad Pitt so quickly got work and more work and more work and movies and etc.

Its 2 different skillsets. Suprisingly often I found people that sound very smart and articulate on forums to be very bad at acctually playing in both poker and starcraft. On the other hand you have people like Isildur. He had problems explaining anything at all when he did his Unibet twitch stream. It's possible to be good at both obv (Phil Galfond)
