Lol Ashley Madison password crack

Now that a hobbyist team has uncovered programming errors that make more than 15 million of the Ashley Madison account passwords orders of magnitude faster to crack, it will be only a matter of time before a large percentage of them are available to hackers everywhere. And given how rampant password reuse is, the tsunami-sized torrent is sure to affect accounts all over the Internet. As Ars chronicled in a 2012 feature headlined Why passwords have never been weaker—and crackers have never been stronger, it's not unusual for Twitter, Amazon, and online services to monitor large leaks and require password changes for affected users... cont.

Until now, there was good reason to believe the 36 million Ashley Madison user passwords published last month would never be cracked. After all, website developers protected them with bcrypt, a hash function so slow and computationally demanding it would require years or decades of around-the-clock processing with super-expensive computers to decipher even a small percentage of them. That assurance was shattered with the discovery of the programming error disclosed by a group calling itself CynoSure Prime. Members have already exploited the weakness to crack more than 11 million Ashley Madison user passwords, and they hope to tackle another four million in the next week or two.

wife is cheating on you, doesn't love/care about you and will no longer fuck you. you have a child together, wife is not a good mother but will probably get custody if there's a divorce. she doesn't want a divorce due to social stigma with family/friends, you don't want a divorce because you want what's best for the child.

pretty easy to come up with other scenarios like this, and i don't think they're that uncommon.

also the cheating doesn't have to be 100% defensible to say someone doesn't deserve their info leaked. the degree of blame on the cheater just needs to be minimized a lot.

I'm not really sure what this site is exactly, but if you're going to cheat, why would you be adamant about the partner in crime also being in a relationship? Is it some kind of mutually assured destruction safe-guard or just a fetish or what?

They could easily just make a deal that they get to have other partners since it's clearly not working out and they are together just for the kid. That's not really an affair as I understand it. Nothing wrong with non-monogamy if both people agree with it.

it's a site for married people to find other married people to cheat with afaik. i think the process was supposed to somehow be more discreet than a typical dating website. as for your question, i dunno, some combination of both i guess? i dunno, maybe they're fine with single people being on the site too, but it seems like it's mostly married/married.

yeah but it's entirely possible the wife in that scenario is still not ok with it due to pride or whatever, or just being a psycho who thinks she can cheat but he can't.

I was interviewed on a radio show a couple weeks ago about the details of this hack. The security was really weak on the site's part. They had been compromised for over a year and had no methods to detect infiltration. They also stored credentials to the payment processor on the servers which were then used to link back all the accounts to actual payment details.

This new detail about how they created this md5 hash with all lowercased versions of the passwords + usernames is pretty gross. Passwords are a very real problem.

No you don't understand that the parameters of the example you gave has consequences towards other parties like the kid. There s no way the environment would be stable in that scenario, if its stable then both parents would have an open relationship and there would be mutual consent in which case it wouldn't be an affair

I'm fine with people being scumbags as long as they don't try to justify it in a way that softens their action

That being said obviously the people responsible for the hacking should be trialed, but something tells me no one ll find them

Being registered at such a site and considering an affair is very different from actually having an affair. Maybe someone looking for adventure after being married for ages changed his mind last second and got his / her act together?
Then there are also plenty of couples with an open relationship, but want to keep their private life private for their neighbourhood or family members. Many people are now screwed due to these guys leaking everything into the public.
