Hey guys,
My room mate is moving to London and I have decided that within a month I'm gonna leave UK altogether after 8 years.
First choice is Czech Republic, I'm from there wouldbe moving back home, but don't wanna make any rash decisions.
I can make around $1k/month in poker so I can move anywhere I want for a while before continuing my career. Altough moving back home is the obvious choice as I can get proper jobs there very easy, are there any other cool and cheap places where you'd recommend for a few months or maybe even longer?
If there are any poker houses I wouldn't mind joining
Let me know your ideas, I prefer somewhere cheap obviously.

you might already be aware of it but http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/ is a good rough guide for what various things cost in other countries, can check specific cities too.
i don't really get how $1k/mo. allows you to move anywhere, it seems like that wouldn't be enough for a lot of places. even in notoriously cheap places like Thailand/Philippines/etc. you can get by on 1k/mo, but would be living pretty modestly.
anyway, putting aside the budget issue you'll probably get better advice if you go into more detail about what kind of stuff you're interested in. i.e. how important is nightlife, outdoor activities, do you want to be near a beach somewhere or someplace more urban, etc. etc. |

Korea is a sick country to live in, however, you're only making $1k a month from poker...
I'd suggest moving back home and continuing your career. |

Average wage in Romania is something like 300-320 Euros, minimum wage is like 170 (which a lot of people get). And they do manage to live, so 1k is a decent amount to live on, at least around here. |

Yeah guys I am super low mainteance, all I need is rent, food gym bills and that's pretty much it. Don't really spend money for expensive clothes/watches, don't drive and don't have high living standards. Obviously in a new country I'd want to go out and explore the culture too, but pretty much just intend to either grind or get a local job. |

You're swede... if u make 1k$/month here you can live a decent life, if you make 4k$/moth you can pretty much live like a baws
Btw I'd move to something like New Zealand or Australia, but i doubt 1k$/month would suffice the costs |

also strange with the expenses guys, when I was working in sales I spent fortune on travel, training new guys, more expensive food as you can't cook and have to get what you find e.g. fast food. WIth poker you need... flat food ulility broadband thats all |

2.5k is going without nice clothes/watches, 1k is more like abject poverty in most modern/western countries. i mean you've been living in the UK, aren't you used to 1k not going that far? not trying to be a dick, just think you should be realistic. if prague gives you the best opportunity to continue your career and make some money i'd go there, plus it seems like a really cool city.
if you still want to find someplace to chill/grind for a few months and are considering places outside of europe i'd go to chiang mai, thailand. it's cheaper than bangkok and the main tourist island spots (phuket/ko phi phi/samui/etc.) and has a really nice laid back vibe, and just a pretty city in general. i spent about 5 months there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. i had a small apartment that was pretty basic but had everything i needed for about $300/month. basically just had the main bedroom area with a writing desk and TV, A/C, a bathroom, and a nice view in a great location. beautiful weather and friendly people, cheap food (especially if you stick to Thai food). i don't even know what broadband costs there because they have internet shops all over that you can use for less than $1/hr so i just used them.
still, i was fairly frugal while there and spent around $1100-1200/mo. 1k is probably reasonable if you just want to set up and grind tho.

fuck these guys - tons of respect for any man who can live off of 1k a month. Pretty impressed you did that anywhere in the UK, are you supplementing that 1k poker income with anything else or is your monthly budget literally capped at 1k?

Should have picked somewhere 'average' |

well I was working until recently, just took a break as there wasnt enough jobs but in the 2 months I got on with less than $1k each month :D
All I spent money on was rent and food, just went for excercise outside.
To the guys saying "don't do it", I am doing it regardless. I stayed in the UK because of my ex in the first place anyway, not rly many friends here and no ties |

Yeah seems to be the best option, In Czech Republic I can also got the best career prospects. I speak English/Czech have Czech High school, UK HND and Bachelor's Degree and over 2 years of experience.
So stay with my Dad, pay him some rent while building BR/looking for jobs and either get a sick good job or build BR to levels where I can make more playing poker. |

You are asking for advice so I will give my 2c. * Disclaimer * I am going to call it as I see it. You might not agree with my eyesight but this is what I see:
-Moving in with parents to build bankroll + look for jobs is a terrible option. You should completely take it off the table or have it as a shameful plan Z. Finding some other buddies to live with while treating self improvement + job hunt as an 80 hr/week job is never a bad plan. I am also not against going to bali or someplace sweet but it has to be purposeful or else you'll be worse off than when you leave.
-People saying that expenses will go up as a poker player + expat are 110% correct. The fact that you can hole up on less than $1k for a couple of months in a place you are already situated in is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the same situation as moving somewhere and playing poker professionally.
*Playing poker professionally can be emotionally draining, boring, et al. If you currently are not playing 10+ hours a day you certainly won't be when you move to x. Basically, professional poker players need more fun distractions. More fun distractions cost more money.
*If you have never done it before or have not actually taken some time to consider it: YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH MORE MONEY MOVING TO A NEW PLACE AND INTEGRATING INTO A NEW ENVIRONMENT WILL COST. I am just pulling this number out of my ass in the current moment but I would guess you have to at least double or triple (and likely multiply more) you're current expenses if you want to have any sort of quality of life.
Conclusion:
Bite the bullet. Figure out a way to not scale down to living with parents by any (ethical) means necessary. Find any job(s) possible that offer the best selection of learning experience + money even if it is just volunteering, freelance whatever, etc. |
