Flush draw on board. Bet harder. Espescially on turn (he probably would have called anyway. top pair is the nuts!).

Had to have him on flush draw, if not, must have noticed 3 diamonds on the board. Thats a scare card if you ask me

You could have bet a little harder on flop and turn, so that he would not have got enough $ left to make a call +EV.
betting the river was probably a misstake, as he would probably have played AK, and most calling hand you had beat stronger on such a board.
