So almost a week ago I decided to become a non smoker, and today not only I am, but I also feel good about it. I had a hard time at first because I was going about it the wrong way, but yesterday I decided to download The easy way to stop smoking by Allen Carr, Im not sure why since Im always skeptical of "easy way" to anything but this audio book changed my whole perspective and helped clear my head.
If you want to quit smoking or even if you dont I recommend checking out this book, its quite a simple concept that somehow is lost on most of us.

ffs I managed to make this sound like a commercial for this fucking book, but get it anyways(get it illegally I wont tell)

cheers

dude its been a week you arent remotely close to quitting yet.

If you thought a little of how the psyche and body works you would be perfectly aware that the best way to get rid of any habit is to do it progressively, sudden changes are not easy for human beings in any way.

how much were you smoking anyway? since i broke my heel i didnt smoke a single cigarette for like 3 weeks and i didnt feel any difference but im not a heavy smoker i probably average just a pack a week .

I was a 2 pack-a-day smoker. Quit 2.5 months ago. It's a bitch.
There really is no "easy way" to quit. The hardest part is the psychological part, as baal mentioned.
First thing you should do is stop drinking. It's insanely hard to keep yourself at bay when you've had a few drinks and people around you smoke. Luckily, I have a non-smoking girlfriend and my friends don't smoke so it made my life a little easier. A week into not smoking is a good start but it's nowhere near where you want to be. You'll get cravings, trust me. Don't play poker either, the stress will only make things worse for you.

And baal, going cold turkey is the only way to quit smoking. You just cant fuck around and say to yourself "I'll only smoke 1 cigarette tonight", the fuck you will. You'll buy a pack and it'll be gone and it will be a massive hit on your self-esteem and you'll go back to your habits in no time.
Take it from me EvilSky, it's a fucking marathon to quit. But 2.5 months into not smoking, I feel healthy again. I work out, I don't have to go outside to smoke(don't know what it's like in CR, but you cant smoke indoors in Estonia). All-in-all, it's a great achievement to quit. I'm not saying I've kicked the habit for good, but the positive things that come with not smoking do encourage me not to smoke again.

If you have questions or what not, don't hesitate to PM.

I dont get how people smoke 2 packs a day
Im a smoker since like 2 years already and dont smoke more than 1 pack AT MOST a day usually just like 1/3-half therefore i dont see a reason to stop smoking either - yeye its bad for your health etc etc who cares

Anyway yeah same thing as baal when i had pneumonia & kidney failure i didnt smoke at all for like 3-4 months and i didnt even feel the need to do so
I can surely say im not addicted to nicotine and can stop whenever i want however i choose not to.
Btw if you dont have strong will no book will help u stop an addiction - its all in ur head. You also shouldnt brag about being 1 week in already... I have friends that were heavy smokers and stopped for 2 years and barely resist the temptation when they see someone else smoking ...

I don't see a reason for smoking. And maybe you should care for you or people closed to you.

I dont appreciate you guys being condescending to me, I dont blog on a whim and I wouldnt be saying this if I didnt know it was the truth.
I quit before and had the same problems you talk about, but only because my frame of mind was wrong, I felt like I was giving up something and I was envious when I saw other people smoking. Now I cant stand it and I just think "why the fuck would you do that" .
By the way Ive smoked a pack a day, sometimes more for about 2 years and been fucking around with cigarettes all the way back in high school, Ive tried to quit before and having a strong will does nothing and I was like your friends that were "depriving" themselves of that sweet nectar.
Now I have no desire to smoke and I know that those days are forever gone, fuck all of you who think you know dick or smoke because you enjoy it, you dont and you never did, read the fucking book and then give me your informed opinion, otherwise its worthless to me.
peace

its a good time killer - yeah i know its sounds completely dumb but it is
it also calms me down - yeah i know that research says exactly the opposite - that the brain start working rapidly but i dont feel that way

when someone has a problem with me smoking near him i either move or dont smoke at all

Its not a good time killer, because that would imply you being consciously smoking it, but you dont, you smoke while doing other shit and most of the time you dont even notice you are doing it much less so completely intrigued by it that you pass the time.
And it doesnt calm you down, it only calms down the part that it upsets by the lack of nicotine, if it really had a relaxing property you would just chain smoke and be the most relaxed person ever, doesnt work that way does it?

You have the same wrong approach I had, and if you say things like " I'm not saying I've kicked the habit for good" then you really havent quit for good because you feel like you are missing out on something, while you really arent.

This guy knows his shit, listen to him Congrats on your progress EvilSky, but you will be having a really hard time ahead of you, so keep concentrating and the pride in your achievement will help you through the rough times . I quit smoking last summer for 2 months, then got back to it after a single fateful day. I gave up again 3 weeks ago, and it is still really hard from time to time. I smoked like 1.5 packs / day right when I quit both times so I could be considered a heavy smoker.

He doesnt know his shit and neither do you, do yourself a favor and check that book out soon.

You are delusional if you havent smoked in 1 week and just expect us to blindly trust that you wont smoke again, it is obvious and reasonable for us to assume you are just starting to quit, and might or might not fail duh.

And interesting that you bitch about we talking in a condescending way to you and then later claim that we dont smoke because we enjoy it, that is extremely ignorant and arrogant.

Ive been smoking for 10 years exclusively socially because i am aware its a very addictive substance so my approach has always been very cautions, and that is the way all drugs should be approached.

That might be ignorant and arrogant if I never smoked in my life and made that comment but thats obv not the case. Baal can you define what you enjoy about smoking that you wouldnt have if you didnt?

That is absurd, going cold turkey is not the only way and actually its not the optimal way.

Habits are developed progressively, you dont start smoking 2 packs the first day you smoke and the same goes for quitting, submitting the mind and the body to a sudden stress is not the best approach.

Also dramatically reducing the intake might be even worse than cold turkey because as u said, they are more available etc.

The best way to get rid of an habit is to slowly reduce it, if you smoke 2 packs a day, try 1.5 packs for some time, then cut it down to 1.25, then to 1 and so on until the habit is totally gone.

People fail so much at this because they take the wrong "cold turkey" approach, not only in smoking, but in loosing weight or any other kind of change of behavior.

the soothing effect due to various brain chemicals being released and the repetition of the mental fixation its quite pleasant.

Baal listen to me Im not delusional and Im not an idiot, you have nothing to lose by listening to this book and yet you stick for what you think is right unconditionally, dont you have an afternoon to spare for something that might make you change your mind ?

Btw Im done arguing with you people, I would just be paraphrasing from the book and not doing it justice, do yourself a favor and check it out, trust me.

Wrong, nicottine does have relaxing properties:

"At higher doses, nicotine enhances the effect of serotonin and opiate activity, producing a calming, pain-killing effect. Nicotine is unique in comparison to most drugs, as its profile changes from stimulant to sedative/pain killer in increasing dosages and use. (Another drug that behaves similarly is ethanol.)" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine

Also drugs rarely work the way you described them, increasing the dosage doesnt increase a positive effect proportionally as mentioned in the wiki article i put, alcohol for example, alcohol can be an stimulator, but it doesnt mean that if you drink 1 bottle of vodka you will be super stimulated, you will be probably passing out with puke all over you.
