2/5 Live
Table has been pretty quiet recently. The game started about 2 hours ago, I won several big pots right off the bat and have pretty card-dead and inactive for about an hour. I have a pretty tight and very aggressive image.

Pre-flop
UTG raises to 15. CO calls, BTN calls, I call from the BB w/ 57ss. We go to the flop 4-handed.

I think this is pretty standard. I would sometimes squeeze here, but UTG probably has a very tight raising range UTG and stacks are not deep.

Flop (Pot: $60):
7h 7d Th

I check. UTG bets $30. CO calls, BTN calls...

I checked flop b/c there's a very good chance that UTG has an overpair and will c-bet the flop. If not, BTN is very likely to take a stab at the pot and even call a c/r lightly (from me).

...I raise to $150...

I think this raise is possibly a little small. I was planning on making it $150 after UTG bet $30, which would be a PSB and didn't adjust after the two calls. Probably should have made this $200, but I don't think it changes much.

UTG tanks and folds, CO folds, BTN thinks for a bit and shoves. It's about $250 for me to call.

And I'm totally baffled. I have played a lot with BTN, he is a bad reg. Very loose with draws/medium-stength hands, and very stationy. He plays back at me a lot with a huge range of one-pair hands b/c he has seen me play good draws very aggressively. I thought he would NEVER do this with a flush draw. It didn't really seem like he would shove with a T - he'd probably flat and maybe fold since he's not a total monkey. It really seemed to me like he flopped the nuts, likely TT or T7, possibly a stronger 7, but he would play any 7 like the nuts and can really have A7o-27s here. I had never seen him make a strong bet without a very good hand. I tanked and folded.

He showed me ATo.

I went on tilt. I really just couldn't figure out if he was doing this for value or trying to make me fold trips, which I obviously had.

I realized today, that so much of playing against bad players (which is like 90% of live poker) is understanding that they don't think about the game like you do. BTN doesn't realize that I'm only check-raising a monster here 4-handed, and more importantly, he most likely didn't make the distinction between betting for value or as a bluff here. He probably thought "well, I have two-pair, top kicker, and this kid plays draws aggressively. All-in obv..."

So, I kind of learned something about playing against bad players. It's important to realize that they don't understand the game on the level that you do. It's harder to put them on a range of hands, b/c the likelihood of them making a play/getting bored/shoving in, "cuz fuck it" is much higher. They don't understand the idea of maximizing EV, and will sometimes just act on instinct or a whim.

What does this mean for how to play against them? I think two things: 1. Game flow is more important. If somebody's stuck/bored/tilted this is much more obvious and relevant in a live game against bad players. 2. Absolute hand value becomes more relevant. i.e., sometimes you just shouldn't fold trips.

Anyway, I'd love feedback on this. I was really tilted last night and have been thinking about this hand for a while. Cheers yo.

Looks like you have to call $250 to win $700?
(60+30+30+30+150+400)

Against a competent player you're generally crushed here, but this is a live 2/5 game against a 'bad regular.' I'm basically never folding getting almost 3:1 since enough of his range consists of Tx, worse sevens, sevens we have a decent chance of splitting with by the river, big draws, and two random cards, etc.

i dont think i'd ever fold against a bad reg that is too loose with draws and mediumstrength hands.

good read, I think you are right about determining who is a thinking player and who is not
