what's NLP?

NLP is an acronym for a lot of things, my instinctive reaction as a programmer was natural language processing.

Neuro-linguistic programming. Most of what you're going to read on it is exaggerated or complete bullshit. I would pick the specific category you want to focus on and look for more technical literature on it. For example if you want to get better at reading facial cues look at FACS.

My view on it:

Scam, bullshit, not proper science, a lot of ppl "get all into it".

Since it sounds all awesome n stuff, early on in a session, they might try to "dazzle" you , ask you some questions, then tell you how you think about things depending on where you look with ur eyes, silly stuff like that, but if u dun know much about it, you'll "fall" for it.

Tested some lightning process in london. Several ppl in my city had "gotten" well, by testing it.

They kinda try and link stuff up, so if you're fat, and you want to stop eating so much chocolate they ask what you hate the most, and stuff like that, then they link it up, so that you'll think of that when ur seeing a chocolate, or eating chocolate.

Usually most ppl who want it to believe, or have taken the time to actually travel, go see someone, feel "amazing" at start, then it starts getting slowly worse over time.

My meeting went a little different, had gotten hold of some dvds about it, googled some, read some. Just felt like those ppl who scam ppl, in those shows around the world, like "Talking with the dead".

Mix of cold reading, charlatans, got nothing for any of them.

Cooler to learn to cold read, and learn stuff about the brain I say. Not get scammed by motherfuckers and cheats. I also think I read that the scientists who first came up with the term, spent tons of time of it, disowned it, not exact science, and well, if you properly place an amazing placebo like that, it has just as good results, and anyone who claim to get well, go into remission a bit later.

Also knew some ppl who tried to become a coach, and make a businiss here and there, and agreed to be guinea pig, while she was learning to help ppl.

I went there, to try and get my body to absorb nutrients my body wasn't absorbing, kinda felt, 99% chance it wouldnt work, but when ur stuck u try lots of shit.

But I got mad right away, and told him to drop the bullshit, he seem to be offended, and i kinda asked too many questions, and i just ended up leaving, saying this is massive scam, if i wasnt so lazy, id do something about it lol.

Most things like that are scam, my 2 cents on it lol

I think it sound so "plausable" since they just take things from real science, then make it into some scam, earn money kinda thing

ive always avoided it. it sounds like mostly bullshit, but its still pretty fucked up and unethical. even though most of it is a scam as others have said, wouldnt feel comfortable using the parts that arent to take advantage of people

Thank you for the comments everyone.

-no interest in 'feeling amazing', or becoming a coach
-scam side exists but I am not concerned 29/30 of the books I read these days I either borrow from the library or pirate
-Marius' comment was especially helpful, and upon further introspection it seems my original motivation was along the cold read / body langauge / psychology side, believing that NLP techniques would help with that.
Sent you a PM, Marius. Thanks again.

Sam Harris is one of the "top" dogs in neurosience, listen to that motherfucker, he's got tons of gold all over, he also got a blog, where he discusses topics, and he got a book about lying, he has theories about how much more awesome things would be if we didnt lie, and how much easier it is if u dun have to "watch" ur self, or worry, since u lie so much

Never touch anything that is popular within the whole 'self-help' movement. If there is anything good in there ever, it is also somewhere else, non-perverted. If you are interested in psychology, and understanding behavior, then study those fields, not the bullshit people use to make a buck and manipulate others.

There's a whole course I recommend you watch here which will be infinitely better than anything you'd find where people try to make a buck off of you. It's free and it's from a good university:

Um, that's misleading information. Just because Sam Harris' name is what pops up in your mind when you see the word neuroscience doesn't mean he's one of the "top dogs". He has studied it and his popularity as a critic of religion makes you think that he is, but what evidence of that do you have? If he was a leading neuroscientist, wouldn't you think his books would be actually focused on neuroscience rather than other topics? Whenever he brings up neuroscience it's always related/under the theme of critiquing religious belief. It's more fair to say that he's more focused on criticizing religion than furthering scientific advancements in neuroscience. The "top dogs" in this field are not people you are likely to actually hear about very much.

What you're describing from me mentioning Sam Harris is actually really interesting, it's my version of what Daniel Kahneman explains in one of his chapters, about when we're just "answering" really fast, from our intuition, what surfaces first, so you're kinda on point.

That being said, even though it's also kinda common to start answering things that are "close" to what the question actually was, and what I was doing there. Sam Harris is one of the most eloquent speakers out there, and when he talks about moral, and his theories, it's such a treat to listen to. So it wasn't the worst recommendation he could have gotten.

For your youtube link, ive actually watched that one too, and i remember liking it a lot lol, you've probably linked it before!

And I answered him better in 2 pm's. A few links to really new, and popular threads about the subjects, a few "mainstream" not to serious to think more about it, and I think I recommended books from some sites.

When it's this kind of topic, im pretty sure you can bring much more weight to it than I can.

I kinda just delve into topics for enjoyment, and i only stay for a little bit, before I move on to something else that seems fun lol (so I have a lot of holes, and not a coherent story in most subjects)

haha lol

when I re-read this;

"I kinda just delve into topics for enjoyment, and i only stay for a little bit, before I move on to something else that seems fun lol"

I mumbled to myself "yeah right, you mean, when you get horny, and u want to fap, then after that, u forgot what ur were doing, so now ur chatting to someone, then that leads to sharing youtubes, then that leads to a topic u find cool, which then leads to a movie, which then leads to 04:00, which then leads to "should do something productive", I'll read this LOL"
