Hi LP

So I lost my job that I thought was going to be my career but such is life. I have always dabbled at poker but have decided to take a serious shot at it will I explore my job opportunities and options. My current financial situation is not so bad. I have 2 months of living expenses and a 600 dollar bank roll. I am bonus whore it up but that seems to be lot harder to do than before. I ll be trying my luck at micro plo and maybe a little NL. I have always ended up fucking up my BR by trying to take shots at limits where I dont belong. So here is a list of starting goals that will help keep me on the right track

1 - DO NOT PLAY OUTSIDE OF BANK ROLL, I have always done this before in the past and try and take a shot and double up at 2/4 or 3/6. I am going to try and stick to .5/.10 until I have at least 1K.

2 - STUDY 1-2HRS A DAY, I am going to be treating this like a job until I manage to find one. So I think I can spend at least 6hrs a day playing poker out of those 6Hrs at least 1 will be devoted to studying.

3 - PAY ATTENTION NO MORE THEN 5 TABLES, Not gonna try and mass multi-table. If I want to get good my best bet is to play less tables and try and focus on the tables rather then playing 20 tables on auto pilot.

Any tips or comments is appreciated

One of the more popular rules that you hear/read when getting into poker is: Don't treat your poker roll as your income, think of it somewhat as money that you aren't afraid to lose, etc.

Also, you should focus on securing another job, then play poker part-time while you're working. I wouldn't even suggest to start playing poker until you got a job, because poker will make you lazy in looking for a job, especially if you win a few pots and think everything is going great.

Remember, 2 months of living expenses isn't shit. Focus on the bigger picture.

"I have always dabbled at poker but have decided to take a serious shot at it will I explore my job opportunities and options. "

I'm not sure what to make of this sentence. Are you saying you want to take poker seriously while you are searching for a job? I sure hope that's what you mean. Poker shouldn't be taken seriously unless you are a pro or have already been one. It's 2012, soon to be 2013. It's not the time to start trying to make a living at poker for the first time. Those days are over unless you are some kind of obsessive genius.

Also, I'm sorry, but your financial situation is really, really bad. Don't kid yourself. Two months of living expenses and a small micro stakes bankroll won't get you anywhere. You need to feel comfortable and be close to stress-free to play optimal poker. You can't be comfortable when you know that in two months if you don't win money you won't be able to eat.

If I were you, I'd play a bit and see if I can run good, but if I don't, I'd cut my losses pretty fast, cash out my bankroll and have an additional month to live on while looking for a job.

fuck I should just sell some of my Pokemon cards, if no one stakes that is what I will have to do - lostaccount

Should have made my money situation a little clear, 2 Months of living expenses and a reliable side income that makes me about a month of living expenses a week. This other income I would rather not talk about on the internet -.- but as far as the money goes I am 100% okay for the foreseeable future.

If you can make one months living expenses per week why the fuck are you trying to take poker seriously? Poker is currently in a state where people who have made millions over 5+ years are in the process of finding better things to do. Your chances of even mild success are extremely low.

What was the job you got fired from? why did you get fired?

Too mainstream to be afraid of mentioning, no local police department is scanning for people saying they sell drugs (false positives etc).

no wait,....must have pretty expensive living conditions, as i cannot imagine canada is cheap...

has a 'side job' that covers all of his monthly living expenses in '1 week' but only has 2 months of living expenses saved....so must have blown through TONS of cash on the main job and side job... so side job might really be selling human organs on the black market, the main job was probably some ER nurse or assistant.

got fired from main job, or left main job. but still has a few bodies on ice stashed away to cover expenses.

unless you intrinsically join poker, not gambling (which very few people can distinguish) go spend all this future time and heartbreak doing any of the following:

1) learn another language
2) learn an instrument
3) learn to solve a rubik's cube in less than a minute

4) learn to squat/bench/dead lift 2x your weight
5) take some uni classes for free
6) ...

if you're making a month worth of living expenses a week why the fuck would you ever try to get serious about playing poker

you should probably stop lying to yourself, it's not good for developing your poker game.

Neither does making money in poker, though.

noone knows your situation as well as you do. And im sure everyone here on LP who hasn't "made it"... tried to at some point. You seem to be fine, just dont put all your eggs in one basket, and continue to reevaluate if poker is for you. I personally said to myself if i didn't make 50k after playing semipro at 100nl-200nl for a year (w/o table selection), id cash out and give up poker completely and focus on school etc. And I did the latter, most of my "profits" came from RB and some rare lucksacking 1knl hu a few times vs monster regs.

Like Stoxtrader said make poker your hobby, and if it ends up that you make money doing something you enjoy all the better.
