DF_Newb's Balls of Steal
   JonnyCosMo, April 06

Ok so maybe I'm not nearly as good as I think I am. Today I started off my session pretty late into the afternoon because I got caught up doing a lot of other things during the day. The tables weren't as juicy as I would have hoped, but whatever, there were still some fish in the sea. I then proceeded to play the following hand vs DF_Newb:

ZAAAAP!!! Ok so let me take you through my thought process on this hand. I have 98 suited preflop, DF_Newb raises, I call, standard. I believe he precieves me as a tight/solid player incapable of making moves because in all honesty, I try to avoid making moves vs fellow LPer's / friends. So I flop an open-ended straight draw on a ace-high flop but there is a flush draw which I dont have also present, so he does a very standard c-bet and I dont take much time and call. This is where it gets interesting... because from my time playing with DF_Newb I know he doesn't back down when he thinks he's getting floated light so I suspected there was a good chance he'd double barrel with air a high % of the time. I dont really want to go into why I had this other read, because he probably will be reading this, but let's say I know that his range here on the turn is this: 66, 77, A7s, A6s, AQ, AK, or absolute air. I say this is air more than 60% of the time easily (at the time I was feeling that 3 out of 4 times this is air). The general idea is that I dont think he likes to put himself into a spot to bet/fold a marginal hand on this turn (such as AJ or weaker) and I suspect he check-calls this turn more than he bet/folds it.

This is where I feel I made a mistake, if I know there is a high chance he has absolute crap when he leads this turn, then I should have just raised him and pot committed myself. At the time, I know that a good portion of the deck is a scare card, because I planned on bluffing the clubs as well if they hit (assuming he checks to me, or attempts some sort of blocker bet I have fold equity to smash). To make a long story short, I decided to take the safe route and call, just to see what he does on the river. I wasn't exactly sure if he was crazy enough to triple barrel with air, but I was kinda hoping that he wasn't that suicidal and that he'd just give up at this point with a bluff.

River came a 6 pairing the bottom card. I know he thinks thats a terrible card to bluff. I hope he knows that I know that the 6 is a terrible card to bluff as well. He checks to me... which immediately tells me the following things: He doesn't have a hand he thinks he can value bet. It's possible that he could have been checking a monster, having me read on a draw that just missed in hopes I bluff the river. But that makes little sense to me since as I stated above, I believe he views me as a tight/solid player incapable of making moves AND I believe he knows that I know how bad of a card that river is to bluff at. It makes no sense that he'd check a hand to me here, and since I had him on a fairly narrow range of hands on the turn, I believe he now has air, unfortunately 9-high doesn't have showdown value vs air...

So I brainlessly forgetting to think about the following things: What could I be representing here? I'm capable of real thin value bets / value shoves, but I'm not sure he's seen any of them yet. Like, there is a fair size range of hands I will play this exact line with: AK, AQ, 6Xs w/ flush draw on the flop, or sometimes even any ace thinking I can steal a chop. Sadly, I dont really have a reason to think he knows this about me unless he's seen some of my hh's I've posted in the past month on LP (which I shouldn't really expect him to stalk me on this or anything). Thinking back on it, I think a bet of $85 would have done an excellent job on this river. The shove just looks too much like I want a fold here, and was a dead give away.

So after getting the wind knocked out of my sails from this hand, I decided to take a break. I might get on and play later tonight, but right now I just want to review my session. I was up 3 buyins at one point during my session, but only ended up $80 when I quit. My hats off to you DF_Newb, you got some balls sir. I feel totally owned right now.

Kathy Daut 8th leveled me
   Daut, April 06

So I came home for the weekend cause I wanted to take care of some poker business stuff -- meeting with a lawyer to get some contracts written for my live backing deals.

Anyway, so im sitting at the kitchen table and my mom starts shaking her head at me and goes "such a waste...its so disappointing that youre not going to school anymore, such a waste of math talent"

So i look at my mom and go "If i had a 15 inch penis would it be a waste of talent if I wasnt a pornstar?"

To my surprise Kathy actually laughed. And then she looked at me and said "Yes, i guess it would be a waste"

OMFG pwned

It's All Coming Back To Me
   JonnyCosMo, April 05

So I started my session today right where I left off yesterday. I sat down at 8 tables, my AA got cracked by KQ in my $20+2 freezeout tourney, and I proceeded to lose 3 full buy-ins in my first 150 hands, all to bad beats or coolers. Shit was sick. So I thought about just stopping playing for the day after my first 400ish hands, then things started to get better... The clouds over my head parted... The sun came out and was shining bright once again. My iTunes randomly selected that song 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' by Celine Dion. It was truely beautiful... I started to own bitches again.

See that guy on the motorcycle at the begining of this video? Yea that was me... So I played about 1500 hands straight at 1/2 this morning and here are some of the highlights:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169543 - This one could have gotten ugly if I didn't resuck out on him.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169544 - Kinda thin, nothing too impressive. Took a gamble on the flop by flatting this guy's donk lead with a player behind me. Not really sure if that's totally the smartest way to play it, but whatever it worked.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169547 - How to kill an aggro donk 101.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169548 - It's Christmas...

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169549 - How did I know this fish was going to call this shove? LOL Max Value baby

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169550 - Semi-coolered TwistedEcho, AKs vs my AA.

After my 1/2 session I got some coffee and breakfast then Steve (PoorUser) was nice enough to sit down with me and give me his guidance through a 2/4 session. Here are some interesting hands from that:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169552 - Orgasm anyone?

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169554 - PoorUser's idea not mine!

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169556 - Alotofdonk gets pwned.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/169557 - Again, PoorUser's magic hard at work. Dont ask.

Here is the graph of my April so far:

Atleast I'm back to almost even! Yeah baby~!!

update
   SakiSaki, April 05

Havent updated this thing in a long time so I guess I should. I ran really bad at the end of march and played even worse. I was tilting and making monkey plays all over, a pretty horrid sight. Fortunately I got my shit together and bounced back up a bit. Im at my parents house now so I dont have my PT stats but I think I ended up about 25k for March. My best month ever and Im really happy about my results.

Ive been cashing out quite alot recently since Im going to Italy with my brother on saturday but I have been doing well in April so far so Im still well rolled for 5/10.

It looks as if Im going to vegas this summer for the world series. Im sooo psyched!

I though about trying to win a seat but thats probibly just a waste of time. I suck at tournaments so I would have to play loads of sattelites or get lucky to even get a seat, + Im not that eager to play the main event anyways so I would probibly just end up selling the seat. I might aswell spend my time playing cashgames and earning the vegas trip that way. Hopefully I can get in on jonnycosmos house renting thingy which would be so so awesome!

God, this is going to be the best thing ever!

Tournament Player Logic LOL...
   JonnyCosMo, April 04

"LOL Donkaments" ... the phrase just says it all. I have respect for tournaments players (for the most part) as what they do can be extremely stressful at times. With that said, it's time to rip on this one moron. May I direct your attention to Team USA's captain AppSt2004. Oh? You didn't know he was the captain of Team USA? And the #6 ranked tournament player in 2005 on all of PokerStars? Let's take a closer look:

Link: http://www.pokerstars.com/wcp/event/
AppSt2004 (Captain) - USA Team Captain, Joe Harwell, has run his own real estate business since leaving college. Joe's only been playing 4 years but has plenty of live tournament experience, playing 3 events of last year's WSOP. Joe is one of the top US players in PokerStars TLB rankings, rated the 4th best US player for 2005, and 6th placed in the world.

Ok so I'm playing my 1/2 session this morning, running like total shit (I'll probably post another list of hands in the Hand Discussion later for people to look over), and Mr. Harwell is sitting to my right at one of my tables. Getting right to the point, this happens to me:

Having no previous information on this player, I thought stacking off with a set of 3's was alright. Am I wrong to think so? If you think I am you can start playing tournaments with this moron too. So I get stacked, reload, play on, whatever. Then this idiot says the following:

AppSt2004: 33 no good obv
JonnyCosMo: ???
AppSt2004: treys are into the muck, gg
JonnyCosMo: are you kidding?
AppSt2004: thanks for the coin.
JonnyCosMo: rofl fish, i hope your not serious...
AppSt2004: obv 33 no good
JonnyCosMo: obv your a card rack
AppSt2004: you just called team usa's captain a fish, your funny.

He then proceeds to think that he owned me? He goes off for 30 minutes on why I play bad, and how he's god's gift to the game. Like... wtf? So what moron, you stacked me once on a total cooler and you think you're good!?! Like, the only way he gets any money into that pot is if I have a set of 3's or 2's. He played that hand like your standard tournament fish, minrais, minraise, minraise. I feel like I got dumber from reading what this moron had to say to me. Ok sorry, had to vent that... very frustrating after being up 3 buy-ins and ending your session down 2.5 buyins. Seriously, I'm not smiling

EDIT: Ok I'm smiling again

Empty the clip and let the lord decide
   Daut, April 04

This semester I'm "taking" 3 classes. Abstract Algebra 2, Complex/Functional Analysis and Advanced Mathematical Logic 2. I have taking in quotations because I haven't exactly been the model student for attendance.

So I didnt go to abstract algebra for a little while. On the friday after spring break, I decided to make an appearance only to find out that there was a midterm coming up on the following monday. This posed a major problem. Basically, even if I wanted to buckle down and study for it, i had no idea what was even on the test because it had been so long since I had went to class. I figured id just show up to the test and as the title says, empty the clip and let the looooord decide.

I asked the good people in the BBV forum at twoplustwo what I should do, and their response was invariably "DROP OUT!"

Then my buddy Jonny Cosmo drew this graph to describe my situation:

I knew what I had to do. I just didnt go to the test. That's what real poker players do, they fold the hand when they know theyre beat.

So I talked things over with my parents and told them I dont really think grad school is for me. If i'm not motivated enough to go to class and dont want to learn this stuff then I really shouldnt be here. So I'm going to hang out for the rest of the semester and withdraw from my classes.

Ok, so anyway, on to the point of this post. Since then I havent been going to class, i've just been playing poker, working out, watching movies, etc. So I've basically been going down imdb's top 250 list and checking out the movies ive always wanted to but never did, and pretty much have been watching one a day. In the past week I've seen apocalypse now, reservoir dogs, kill bill 1 and 2, and raging bull for the first time ever. but I cant seem to find the one movie i really want to see...

For the past 2 weeks ive been trying to find the seven samurai. Not in best buy, not in circuit city, not in blockbuster, not in the little movie racks at walmart or target. Nowhere. I was beginning to believe this movie didnt really exist. And then I remembered a little movie place down the street called mike's movies. I was sure this dude would have it, i mean he specializes in movies, hes got to.

As I pulled up and saw the front of the store I became really skeptical. I mean on the front window the only movie poster he had was Charlotte's Web.

Imagine walking up to the window of a promising movie store and seeing a 24 x 32 in. shot of that fat little blob's mug. I totally lost faith. i decided to enter anyway.

First I hit up the classics section. No seven samurai.
then I went to the drama section. No seven samurai.
Next I hit up adventure. No seven samurai.

With a disgusted scowl on my face I started to walk out when I just saw it sitting there in the middle of this unnamed rack. WOOHOOO.

It was pretty damn expensive, the movie cost over 40 fucking dollars, but that ain't nothin to a boss.

Time to watch it. Will post results later.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
   JonnyCosMo, April 04

So recent I've been searching for a new watch (since I left my old favorite Fossil watch in Hawaii with my best friend while I was on vacation there) and so me and milkman have been searching for baller status at an affordable price. It's actually kind of funny how much some people pay for these watches because I'm pretty sure 95% of the price on some of these things are just for the name. Rolex, being one example, has a dozen watches all worth sick amounts of dough, but all baller status ofcourse. While scanning their website I found my dream watch:

May I Introduce to you...The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

This watch was even named for me. Unfortunately I looked at the price and threw up (Somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 at the minimum, figures something that's tagged with "Cosmo" would be that baller :-P). So I guess the search continues. Anyone know of a good watch that has a similar style to this one, but is also somewhat affordable? Like in the mini-baller range of under $1000? If so, give me a heads up.

I Run Like a Special Olympics Runner
   JonnyCosMo, April 03

... So today sucked some royal ass. Started off the day early and played a session that lasted 2 hours and came out of it down $450. Then after my nap and a work out I kicked up another session and managed to lose another $500 all at NL200. Like wtf... I think this picture sums up what I'm feeling:

Playing E-Poker at Hollywood Park

Notice how I'm still smiling? I'm pretty sure I was stuck like $300 all to Daut and Lyric at the time this picture was taken. This about sums up my feeling of fake wonderfulness. I feel like jumping into oncoming traffic.

On another note, I'd like to take this time to point out how bad carrotsnake is at poker. Why do people at twoplustwo think this guy is the God of NL200 on Stars?

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/168605 <-- Calls a 4 bet all-in with AJo
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/168604 <-- Retard bluff vs a total aggro donk. What does he expect the guy to fold? LOL...

This guy is so stupid it hurts my head. If you think he's good or hard to play against, your probably not too good yourself. There is no way this guy wins at the winrate he claims on the twoplustwo forums.

My analysis of Adam Junglen's superman call
   Daut, April 02

When I first saw this hand I immediately thought it was the worst call I had ever seen. However, the more I think about it the more interesting the hand gets. For those of you who havent seen or heard about this hand, it came up in the monte carlo tournament a few days ago. Here was the spot:

Patrick Antonius makes it 1k from the cutoff. Adam makes it 3.2k from the button and Antonius makes it 9k. Adam calls.

Flop:
Qc 2s 4c

Patrick moves in for 34.5k. The break has just happened, but a crowd is developing around the table as only the two players remain seated. Adam keeps staring intently at Patrick, checking his chips, it'll cost most of his stack to call. Patrick sits impassively. Finally, eyes still focused on Patrick, Adam pushes the 34.5k into the pot, and Patrick visibly loses the colour out of his face as he flips over 3c 5s . Adam turns over first the Ac, then....the Jd ! Everyone including Patrick manages a double take. I hear people shocked, yet still somehow impressed at the call.

Turn:

8s

River:

As

Patrik raked a ~90k pot with a straight.

So as I said it came off as a bad call at first. I did a quick analysis on how adam does against a sample hand range of patrik's.

We are getting roughly 1.5:1 odds but a little bit better, so lets say we need 39% equity.

If we assume that patrik has air here 20%, a draw (clubs, gutshot, oesd etc) 30% and a monster (set/AA/KK) 50% then we get the following.

Suppose against air that Junglen has on average 75% equity. This fair because if patrik has 2 live cards hes about 25% and sometimes he has adam dominated (AK), sometimes adam has patrik dominated. but I have trouble beliving that patrik will often just shove hands like 68o where he missed completely, so i think 20% of the time is a generous estimate here.

Now, against a draw, lets say that adam has 50% equity on average. This is also fair because some big draws are more than 50% vs adam(like 56cc) and some gutshots are a bit under.

And against a monster, lets say adam has on average 8% equity. sometimes he will have a little more if patrik has KK, sometimes he will be murdered against a set, sometimes patrik will have AQ, whatever, 7% is fairly accurate.

ok, now his ev given these assumptions is .2*.75+.3*.5+.5*.08=.15+.15+.04=.34
34% equity. This is not good, in fact its quite -EV. If we adjust the hand range a bit to include more air and less monsters perhaps we can convince ourselves that adam has CLOSE to enough quity against patrik's range. (this would require a very very very good read because adam is getting very bad odds and patrik will often show a good hand here)

Now, let's backstep a bit before i continue.

I think the call preflop is terrible. Here is adam's quote on the situation, right after it happened:

His range for 3-betting preflop is so wide...When I called the 6k extra I was trapping. I don't care, I've played 10k comps before, his move in was a scared bet, I'd have probably called with King high.

how exactly do you trap with AJo? you dont hit flops often enough and when you dont you arent even certain of where you stand. It's a total reverse implied odds situation. I think that the call preflop is atrocious, and if he really thought his range was that wide, he should shove. he would be risking roughly 41k to win 14k, and he gets folds more than enough to make this a very good play (much much much more EV than calling here even though he has position). I wont bother running the EV calculations but I assure you this is very +EV if patrik is calling with say AA KK QQ JJ AK and is putting in a 3rd raise about 10% of the time (which would mean he is calling 1/3 the time and folding 2/3 the time). Ok, just for you guys ill run the damn EV calculation

Let's say that patrik calls the all in 33% and folds 67%. when he calls, AJo has 25% equity against that range.

.67*14=9.38 (when he folds we win 14k)
.33*(.75*-41+.25*48)=.33*(-30.75+12)=.33*-18.75=-6.25

so our EV of shoving here is over 3k. very very good.

I'll also add in that folding to this 4bet is just fine as well. Nothing wrong with it, havent risked a lot, AJo isnt all that strong. And it's also ok toflat cal with AJo in position here.

ok, back to where i was. now, suppose that we can convince ourselves that Adam almost has enough equity against patrik's range but it is still -EV to call. I think if we have a good enough read to convince ourselves of this it becomes a call postflop for the following 3 reasons.

1. we have a chance to knockout the best player in the world
2. we will have a big chip stack which we will be able to take advantage of because....
3. Everyone at the table will utterly fear us.

Imagine how scared the average poker player would be of a guy who just bitched the best player in the world and now has a stack. If he could have a 100k stack after this move, its at a point in the tournament where nobody will fuck with him and he can just run everyone over and build a monster stack in the next few hours. It would have such profitable aftereffects that I think having a slight -EV situation is overcome with ease.

The question becomes how -EV are we willing to go in order to still take this gamble? Unfortunately that isnt quantifiable, but I would guess that its around 35% equity, a little bit higher than I came up with in my EV calculation.

Now, note that I said i was giving patrik a generous range, and I still think that. I just dont see how we can assume he has air or a draw here much more than that, I would usually assume much less, but for the sake of argument i gave adam the benefit of the doubt in his read. perhaps adam was a little more sure of this and could push it into the 35%+ range. Then although it's still a -EV call, i say great move.

Kid's sure got balls to pull something like this. I still think the preflop call is atrocious, but after a lot of thought I have come to appreciate this postflop call. he gets my gold star award for the week, mainly because its the manliest call of all time, he obviously has some Bryan Van Dautsend blood in him to make patrik say matte.
