Cant. Stop. Degening. by NewbSaibot, March 24

This is hardly a classic degen move in the grand scheme of things, but I think it counts since it involves me "going back to my old ways". I have a confession to make. I've been playing NL10 underrolled for quite awhile now

I was doing fine at NL2 and then NL5, and then I remembered something. A forum post where HSNL players were discussing their BR requirements after going busto or cashing out or whatever. Most of them agree'd that if they were to blow their roll for NL1000 somehow, and start over at NL25 or NL50, they would probably play a 10-15 BI game just because they are that confident they can crush it quickly and move the hell on up. So I looked at my shiny $140 BR, and decided that since I only play 6-8 tables of 6max at a time, I had plenty of breathing room to take a few beats and play higher limits. This is how I officially ended up at NL10. Now ever since then it's been kinda breakeven I guess. A few bad beats followed by some quality rebuilding, but I definitely dont like the fact that I'm breaking BR management pretty heavily here playing with as little as 10 BI's when I have a downswing, and 15 buyins when I'm running hot.

And it gets worse. I ended up shorthanded at one table and some mega donk running 71/5 @ 50 hands just keeps putting the beats on everybody. Naturally he tripples up off me busting QQ twice and something else, with his little miracle flops/rivers. Bitch hit n' runs, so I fuckin follow his ass to an NL25 table, cursing myself for doing this all the way. Naturally I score most of it back thank fucking god, but the point is wtf am I doing? I've been playing so much NL10 the last few weeks that it doesnt even bother me anymore to be underrolled.

Quick session stats reveal the following (fruity NL25 stats simply b/c i was trying to trap hit n run donkey)
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4990/35332251.jpg

So the ultimate question is, can I actually keep playing NL10 right now? My bankroll is $160, which is a good 16 buyins. I mean cmon thats pretty damn close right? Or am I looking at this all wrong. Should I force myself to play NL5 just to teach myself discipline? I did jump back to NL5 a few days ago, even with 12 BI's for NL10 just to see how I would handle it, and I felt so bored coming up 1.5 buyin's in 1500 hands when that could have been 1.5 buyin's at NL10.

One word sums up my attitude to my poker management skills at this moment, and thats "meh...."

The Rich List by TenBagger, March 24

Alpha Magazine released their annual list of the world's highest paid hedge fund managers

http://iimagazine.com/Alpha/Article.aspx?ArticleID=2165638

Guess who's number one? No not Steven Cohen. Rather it the man that I've idolized for quite some time now, James Simons. He's had back to back years of $2 Billion+ paychecks and 4 straight years of making at least $1 Billion. He was first on the list for 2006, third for 2007 and first again for 2008. Nobody comes close to Simons in terms of performance and consistency. Who exactly is this man?

http://www.iimagazine.com/Alpha/Article.aspx?ArticleID=2165639
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Harris_Simons

"Jim Simons continues to defy logic. In a year when most hedge funds lost money — and the few that were in the black generally managed less than $1 billion — Simons, the renowned founder of East Setauket, New York–based Renaissance Technologies Corp., generated a hard-to-fathom net 80 percent return at his 20-year-old flagship Medallion Fund. What makes this feat even more incredible is that Simons, one of the members of Alpha ’s inaugural Hedge Fund Hall of Fame (June 2008), charges a fat 5 percent management fee and 44 percent performance fee. To put it another way, Medallion — which has about $7 billion in assets — was up almost 160 percent before fees."

And folks, this man does this every fucking year, during boom times and through recessions. How does he do it?

"Simons, an award-winning mathematician, won’t discuss his strategy, except to say that it is based on rapid-fire trading across almost every possible market and that it relies on computer-driven programs designed by an army of more than 100 Ph.D.s."

Alpha is such a commonly used term. There is alpha magazine. Bridgewater, the world's largest hedge fund named their flagship fund "pure alpha". Alpha is to investing what +EV is to poker.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_(investment)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jensen%27s_alpha

Simons is the king of alpha.

first winning session in a loooong while by whamm!, March 24

too mediocre to post graphs and shit. but believe me when i tell you it's i think my first legit winning session in like over a month( took i think around 10 days off not playing at all), but rb kinda saved my ass enough to be up 1k this month, confidence is really low atm, i KNOW im running like dogshit but whatever, ill bounce back soon enough and up the volume and winrate when i do, havent taken that yearly march getaway coz i dont have anybody to go with and my kids are staying with me so i think ill be taking a 4 day break someplace maybe at the same surfing island up north like last year, but in april or may, different friends are going to be with me this time so i dunno if theyll be bringing girls along so if i do see girls in swimsuits at least theyre gonna be from a different group circle

note:
well all this since going back to fuckign stars >< eurodonks are great but feels so gay playing them , something's wrong with me i think lol

Meh by dejokah, March 24

So after breaking even for 5 sessions and watching my ptBB drop from 6 to 4,xx I was starting to get worried but I had this awsome 10 buyins session and it's all good now, well kinda I could be running so much better this week I've ran into so much beats/setups/coolers that I'm pretty sure a couple of months ago would totally crush my ability and will to play poker.

I just stopped a session due to 3 hands in a row where I got totally fucked, standard stuff to be honest but they happened in less then 5 minutes dif, witch is very T_T

http://www.liquidpoker.net/mytlnet/myhand.php?view=item&id=659426

I started NL25 with 5xx$ and now I'm sitting at 1500$ (400$ from micro donkaments the rest is NL25) not sure what to do with them I have three options in my mind, take a NL50 FR shot, play some NL25 6-max to improve my postflop game or cashout leave like 600$ buy some cool stuff and keep playing NL25.

What do you guys think ?
How big is the leap to NL50 FR or NL25 6-max ?

I'm gonna make a decision by the weekend I love playing this game and the thought of improving makes me happy, but buying a cool 22 inch monitor a netbook and more 360 stuff also makes me happy. =p

Some 6Max questions by LemOn[5thF], March 24

As NL10 FR is clearly rigged on Stars + Show Spoiler +

I enjoy much more my NL2 6Max taster sessions on iPoker with my altern roll.

Why Does FR suddenly feel like gambling? A Fish sucks me out, I almost never get it back and the number of no-skill rocks is just sick.
SH I love the predictable rocks and a fish that sucks a BI is so much more likely to give it back to ME. It seems way more skillbased.

Anyway here are my stats for first roughly 2.5K Hands, is this standard somehow?
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1990/6max.png

What I don't understand really is the concept of 3betting, what kind of hands do I want to do it with and against what kind of opponents? And whats the normal%? FR It was just AA KK +AK, QQ, in extreme cases JJ Against right loose opponents, but I saw some huge ranges in high stakes section SH (which is deepstacked though mostly).

Right now I will keep altering both NL10 FR and NL2 SH iPoker. But I dont think I can ever come back to play FR on NL5, the slow pace and small pots/blinds are not motivational enough for me to observe the tables or improve my game. If the coolers and suckouts push me down to 15BI NL10 I will seriously consider switching completely and regrinding from NL2 SH

Ship the rakeback by Sicks Macks, March 24

After a few months of putting it off, I finally spent my ironman medals on the thing with the best conversion rate, tourney tokens (because it doesn't come out of your MGR). I had been dreading this, because given that there are no $26 sitngos the tokens must be used for MTTs, meaning while I was getting some nice EV rakeback,, there was a >50% chance that bitch Sklansky would steal all my monies. I have no idea what I'm doing in tourneys so I just opened up two 45 mans and a 90 knockout and promptly ran shit (ran good). Ship 5th in the 45 man and 6th in the 90 man (only one knockout though), something like 200 bucks. As a cash player I'll take it.

I'm not sure I'm going to do the same thing next month, I wish I could just mass table SNGs with them. Oh well, I think I'm going to start using points for the token sattys and then just playing shitloads of these so my real rakeback (precious MGR) doesn't get touched at all. Furthermore, I'd like to continue to win at cash. Hope everyone runs well.

Looking For a Stake by RJ227, March 24

Hi,

I am looking for a stake to play 25 NL 6 Max on FTP. I used to play SNG's on FTP and Cake, but switched to cash last month. I have played the last 1.5 months on Cake Poker. I got staked $300 from my roommate in early February to play 20 NL 6M on Cake. In that time, I've moved up to 50 NL and have built that $300 to $2800 before rakeback. My roommate only staked me to make money in a relatively short amount of time and would rather keep the profits than reinvest.

Thus, I come here, hoping that someone would be interested in staking me. I am easily accessible by both AIM and telephone and would be quite happy to talk to anyone interested in staking me beforehand. I would give frequent updates and would like to go over hands with staker, etc.

Please contact me if you have any interest at all or any questions.

Thanks,
RJ227

Boooya! by MasterofLaw, March 24

Took my fever and my fat ass back to the tables after a short break. This time only a couple of rigged hands occured, a lot fewer than an average session for me. About 2-5 two and threeouters. The abscense of set ups made me leave the session with a profit of +5.5bi. Really nice. NL25 really sucks and people continues to put money in the pot extremely eagerly. Not pf ofc, but if they decide to call or whatever on the flop then they're stuck. Therefore I have been playing pretty LAGish and building pots with draws and so on. I think that can explain my swings pretty much.

Regarding the laddertourney I won the 3rd round also but I think I'll call it a day now and play round 4 tomorrow instead. Really want to be able to work again tomorrow, have felt better last couple of hours. It's a hard decision to make when youre sick on a new job, almost like a catch-22, either you boss kicks your ass for you being on sickleave or else he'll kick your ass for you being the reason everyone else at the office catches a cold and have to stay home. But if I can play poker for so many hours as I have been today I probably can work tomorrow. A tricky thing is that you always feel worse in the morning than during the day because the morning occurs before you can inject you body with some sweet painkillers ;-)

G'night folks...over and out!

Took a short session, lesson learned don't push the limits if u had a winning day despite having a huge cold at the same time. Lost 6bi almost but I walked into 3 2outers and then became a bit to loose three times with QQ,88 and 77 on 3betted pots pf.

Short report... by MasterofLaw, March 24

Made a great dinner of chicken and rice, very nice indeed!

Thereafter I logged in again and this time around the session started like a firework of great cards and hits that stood up all the way. Were about 6bi+ after less than 30-40minutes of play. But soon thereafter I went in to AA with QQ on a 9high flop and some JJ+ didnt stand up against AK. What finally made me quit this session was a set vs set.
All in all I made a profit between 1.5 and 2bi:s but more close to the latter.

Now I think I'm going to just chill out and play some ladder sng 30$ or 3rd step, bought in on step 2 and won. Not much action at those tables so it might take a while before I get to play.

Gonna logon and see if Dusty plays and do some railing also!

Bye for now!

Back from Vegas by Night2o1, March 24

I am not in a big writing mood at the moment so I will just lay down some of the highlights here

The strip is really interesting. There's older places and newer places, high class high-end casinos and dirt cheap crappy ones.. its fun to walk down the street and just check everything out. I've always thought the big buildings and urban development in general was really cool so it was awesome seeing all of the different buildings. Its uncanny how much simcity looks like real life when you're in the plane looking down as well, LOL.

I ate out like every day. There are a bunch of really nice restaurants and a couple of super excellent buffets. I had an awesome rib eye at Penazzi (Harrah's casino I think), really fantabuloussickawesome sushi at Naked Fish, very good buffets at the Wynn and Planet Hollywood, and a great meal at some tapas bar across the street from the Wynn.

Poker-wise I played a ton of live small stakes (mostly 1-3 at the Wynn). I spent a lot of money, for me lol, and I came back from the trip break even on my bankroll/spending account thanks to winnings. I ran like sick bad the past week up until this last saturday and sunday and it is kind of a different feeling than playing online. Its something you really have to learn to understand properly, just as you have to learn to do so online. I'm really tilted I don't have any graphs to show god damn it!

There's a lot of different things to learn in live poker and I'm going to have fun doing that as well as continuing to develop my poker game in general..

I met a bunch of people. Corwin (Myth), Evan(Frinkx), Jimmy Fricke, Haj(Uptown), Eric(peachy), Martin(mannercookie), a number of other live players who's names don't mean much do u guys lol and etcetc it was a lot of fun. Corwin turns out to be pretty awesome and he basically showed me around and we hung out a ton. I'm not going to comment on everyone but ya, I thought pretty much everyone was a really cool guy. I don't think every one of them will remember my name at the moment but we'll see what comes from our further interactionz.

Went to two nightclubs and two strip clubs. Studio 54 and Tryst, which were both fun, and strip clubs Sapphire and obviously Rhino. I'd never been to a strip club so they were new experiences, rofl, but they were both really interesting and quite a bit of fun. Its going to take a lot of discipline not to blow too much money going out in vegas..

Something important: Someone might remember that I was supposed to be back the sunday before last.. not the 2nd monday afterwards.. LOL. That's because I didn't really want to go home. At all. My flight was at 6AM and we were celebrating Corwin's birthday at Tryst (this was funfun btw). Anyway, I messaged saying I wanted to move here to play poker etc to corwin after he took off somewhere at 4am. He simply offered me a place to stay for a while without charge. SICK.
So I just said fuck it and kept partying til Tryst closed, then kept doing random shit 'til I went to bed at 10AM lawl.

And with that I'm moving to Vegas for an unknown amount of time. I'm leaving in about a week and I'll be driving from Orlando, FL to Vegas (christ this is gonna suck) over a 3-5 day period. I'll post my route and stuff and if anyone is a long it, well, I dunno whatever we'll see ^^.

There's more stuff, but my recall sucks so someone will have to ask about something and jog my memory haha.

I'm sore by ToTehEastSide, March 24

I didn't post a session yesterday because I didn't have one. I usually grind every day and had planned on one but here's how yesterday went.

  • woke up
  • ate
  • played drums to wake up and see if I was coordinated at all
  • surfed internet
  • went and worked out
  • saw the MIAC report
  • got very offended
  • made my reply
  • was still way to irate to play poker with a good expectation
  • went to the gym again and rowed for 25 mins then played racquetball
  • racquetball kicked my ass
  • had a great dinner talking with ppl who care
  • came back home still somewhat annoyed but totally exhausted
  • slept forever

I plan on making up for the missed grind today, just going to eat first. I'll post the outcome here for any interested. Can't believe I'm already feeling yesterday. Wonder what I'll play...
