Me wanna play full time
  T8Suited, Dec 03 2007

So I managed to win 6k in October and 3k in November while writing up and submitting my chemistry thesis.

Even though 2 months and 100k hands aren't a lot, at times I can't help wonder -- can I make a living playing full time? I mean, I only stand to win more when I get better, learn to become more disciplined, and move up.

Barring a disaster I should successfully wrap up my oral defense in early January. And I have already applied for a post-doctoral position in Hong Kong starting March.

Chemistry isn't bad. Academics. Education. But these jobs all come with the pressure to perform.

Why bother with a real job when I can do something that appears easier, more lucrative and more fun?

But at the same time, my parents are going to kill me if they hear I am becoming a professional gambler. Especially when a close friend of theirs wrecked her family/life after losing tens of thousands playing sucker casino games in Macau.

Hmm

Got some confidence back
  T8Suited, Nov 30 2007

The past couple of days I managed to increase my bankroll from the recent low of 1558x back to 1628x. And I did so by playing well.

How I got to rock bottom:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323493 AA I was raising A LOT at this table so someone decided to pick a good (?) time to take a stand against me.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323501 66 What can I do

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323525 AA Probably inevitable against those stack sizes

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323555 99 Looks like a cooler, but some 1st level thinking might have led to me making an epic laydown

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/322937 AK No hand that I beat will call my huge turn bet

The road to recovery includes some interesting hands:

Such as this:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323486 55 Against an in-line reg. I instant-called flop and small-value-bet river in an attempt to represent AK TPTK. One of the most well-played hands in my life.

~As an aside~
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323572 QTs I decided to take another shot at this predictable reg with a speculative hand that I have a soft spot for

and this:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323544 73s Fun float

and this:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/324855 T7c Taking my time to call flop and instant-shove turn

And some cute hands:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/322888 A2h half a buy-in, winning a showdown unimproved

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/323573 AK another sizable win, showdown unimproved

Game gone stale
  T8Suited, Nov 26 2007

Sad but true

To see my win rate steadily dwindle from 9 PTBB over 20k to 5.4 over 90k was quite depressing.

Sometimes I can't even perform 1st level thinking. To often I just didn't bother to do so. Like, I raised w/ AK, 4-way pot, ZOMG flopped top-2 on a 2-suit board. Tightie c/min-raised me, but no, top-2 is too pretty, he could be fucking with me with a flush draw, so I pushed. Sure enough tightie showed bottom set.

There were multiple times I ran really well. But then one big mistake, boom, back to square one.

I made 6k in October playing 100NL. This month I'm up like 3.5k with 4 days to go -- don't think I will be able to keep it up.

Tilt Control Tilt Control Tilt Control
  T8Suited, Nov 21 2007

After a crappy, losing afternoon session during which I was practising excessive floating, I decided to try to redeem myself tonight.

I was playing well tonight -- relatively tight and aggressive, picking up numerous small/medium pots. Feeling good about my game.

So how does Pokerstars reward me for improved play?

Answer: Run my KK into AA when I was about to go up for a BI. Twice.

After a third significant lost pot I went on tilt and donked off 50BB on two different occasions on a same table.

But at the end I was able to calm down and make it all back for an overall $150 and a meh 4.7 PTBB/100.

Losers:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319434 KK
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319424 KK
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319436 22 I was surprised villain didn't value-bet river

Winners:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319433 33 Standard stacking with set
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319421 64s This is one special hand that I overplay, but on the other hand it is the 9th winningest hand in my database. Successful representation of a set here?
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319419 T8h Yay
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319423 33 A rather marginal set-hunt spot -- call 12 to win 125 (55 + possibly 70 behind). Plus a slight chance that WCGrider will get involved and lose.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/319459 44 No fear against a good reg

The grind continues
  T8Suited, Nov 20 2007

A profitable afternoon session (+291 over 900 hands) was negated by an uneventful and discouraging late-night session (-124 over 1.1k hands)

Afternoon hands
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318703 65c Regular villain played his KK too casually
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318704 96s I felt horrible about this one coz my read (I put him on an overpair) was totally off
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318706 84h When I called preflop I thought I was on the button.

Evening session. Would have been a better night if my monsters held up more frequently:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318666 66 =/
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318682 JT SB special annihilated
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318683 TT A positive hand. In any event I wasn't going to call down 3 stiff bets.

And finally, my new laptop:

Preflop raise...Ugh
  T8Suited, Nov 19 2007

2 weeks in review:

I just can't properly incorporate PFR into my game.

Never open limp. Raise all PP from any position. 3-bet with a wider range.

I tried many times. It didn't work. Pure spew.

Therefore I am reverting back to my old style:
[x] Run 20/8 preflop
[x] Play against passive regulars
[x] Avoid big pots with 1-pair hands OOP
[x] Make sharp postflop decisions
[x] Profit

I know stretching a PTBB of 9 (which I achieved after my first 20k hands) over 100k hands would be far-fetched. So how about 6? I am @ 5.9 over 80k right now.

Some memorable moments from the past week

Nov 15/16 Late night. Eventful night. Run like shiet for most of the night, and then made 3 BIs against regs at the same table over 6 hands (stacked another regular within another orbit)

These hands made me want to cry:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317005 QJd Standing up against a crap-pulling opponent
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317007 AK Ace-high vs megadonk good til river
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317009 QQ 2-outer
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317011 AK AIPF, outflopped

+3 Buy-ins within 6 hands
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317014 22 +$40 without seeing flop
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317015 KTc Good board well played
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317016 T9c Same opponent. Brutal board but 2-pairs held (although I later gave it back to him with a poorly played set).
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317017 QQ Notice the chat. Some dude is jealous.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317019 K2c An orbit later. Set no good

Nov 16 evening. Winningest session ever. Not many memorable hands. Just many small to medium pots. Remarkable hands:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/316963 AJd Ugh
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/316964 JJ Chaser got there
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/316965 22 Sweet pot
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/316966 KQ Not exactly a fistpump river shove but I was good.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/316968 KK Overzealous opponent
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317038 84c My favourite crap hand

Nov 18-19 late night:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/317951 73 BB special
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318046 99 Wierdly played. Can't question result.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318047 55 Can't do anything right vs frol123 Part I
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/318048 77 Part II =/
