Wtf with these Atheist ads. Atheist thinking they're better than everyone else now, pretty gay. I meditate from time to time on the ideas of what is consciousness?, how did everything get here?, is there anything that transcends death?, are there any forces we cannot detect through our 5 senses? etc. I'm mostly in the "I have no fucking clue" category, but if someone chooses to believe in their religion such as Christianity, lives their 90+ years of life, then dies a happy person believing that they will go to heaven, that's fine by me. As long as they take their religion as more of a personal issue and not go preaching it around the only way to salvation or whatever.
Just relax about your friends dude. The people that follow Christianity/Catholicism can be divided into tons and tons of different groups that follow thousands of different "religions". You'll have the group that just goes to Church only on Christmas and Easter, and pray every now and then all the way to the faggot groups that go out and spend their days protesting against gay marriage or preaching that God is going to send all soldiers, gamblers, people having pre marrital sex, etc. to hell. I'm pretty sure some of your friends believe in Christianity because it's better for them to believe in that instead of the whole life sucks then you die, they prolly don't take their religion seriously.

OH FUCK
that's exactly why I said IF YOU ARE NOT AND ATHEIST DO NOT READ THIS
I wont answer all your questions just because I'm too lazy to do it and because I've answered question like this a gazillion times. being more active in an atheist community means READING MORE ABOUT IT AND POSTING IN ATHEIST FORUMS. I NEVER tried to spread atheism no anybody, if you wanna believe your god fine, you are the one wasting your life. It's just sad to see people wasting so much of their lifes and living in fear because of some stupid fairy tale. AND YES ROFL AT YOU SAYING THAT MY FRIENDS ARE TRYING TO SAVE ME. I dont try to teach them anything but I really believe that atheist life is a GAZILLION times better than any religious life for a thousand reasons that you cannot understand just because jesus wont let you and so I wont bother. Richard Dawkins says in some of his books how religious is the biggest problem of human kind and how it makes the world a worse place, if you wanna know about buy the book and read it.
ps: for the rest of the ppl reading this
FUCK JESUS CHRIST
if you believe in any religion and want to dicuss about go some place else, I didnt started this post to dicuss religion with you. I want to talk with the atheist/agnostic/etc ppl, so just let us go to hell together and GET THE FUCK OUT

This blog post is exclusive for Atheists. If you are not an Atheist STOP HERE!
I've been an atheist for about 4 years or so and lately I've become more active in the atheist community. I'm dicussing and learning more about atheism and religions. Problem is I have a lot of religious friends. Being more active in the atheist community made me start looking to some of my friends like if they are dumb lol, not that I stoppped to like them or that I keep trying to tell them how dumb they are, it's just that I don't feel as good as I felt before around people that follow such things. I can't stand the idea that my friends believe that shit, that they don't even stop to think about what they believe. I know most of LP is atheist and I didn't want an opnion on a atheist forum, so here I ask: should I stop being active so I can feel better around most of my friends? should I learn how to ignore their believes? I hate to dicuss religion with religious people so to try change them is really not an option.
I'm afraid I'm becoming kinda dumb myself, I really don't know... I know some religious ppl feel bad around an atheist cause they can't stand one person that doesn't accept his god, so maybe I'm becoming like that but in a atheist way? I dunno
enlightenment please
.
What do you mean by Atheist community? Do you mean people who go around and preach about how dumb religious people are or do you mean a community where you go out and do community service and educate people on humanist values in order to make the world a better place? Hopefully it's a humanist community u are becoming more involved in. You should never stop pursuing something because your friends have different values if you truly believe what you are doing is for the good of humanity, just don't be a cunt. On that note, why hate that they believe in religion? Does their belief make them individually a worse person? i.e. they now think the world is 6k years old because the bible tells them, or does their belief in a God make them a kinder and more humble/good person? This is the most important question to ask yourself before you go about hating on a person because they are religious. Also don't be scared to discuss religion with most religious people, just don't be condescending towards their beliefs and you should be able to have a intelligent conversation, kinda goes back to the don't be a cunt idea. The most important values for an atheist are tolerance, humility, empathy, and a quest for understanding. By hating someone due to their religious beliefs you are going against your (or what should be) core values and are no better then Fred Phelps.

What atheist group has helped others? Bill and Milenda gates foundation for starters and I'm to lazy to look up the rest, however American Atheists and other Atheist organizations do infact contribute large sums of money to charity.
People who are heavily "new atheist" don't seek to discredit the teachings of jesus what we are hoping to do is show that the good teachings of religion like being good to other ppl, don't steal, etc etc. Are not values of any religion but are taught by all due to the fact that they are humanistic values. These values will or should be taught by any civilization. The problem we have with religions are that they also teach many things which hurt humanity. Christianity for example is very sexist, racist, and also preaches destruction of natural resources. What we hate so much is that so often throughout history people take what should be a book meant for good and misconstrue it to do their own bad deeds. Atheism would likely not bring about a better society then religion, after all stalin and pol pot were atheists, however a humanistic atheist society does have the potential to be a better place then any other religion could bring about.
On that idea tut_x, don't go around preaching all the wars of the world were brought on by religion. Very very few wars were caused due solely to religion, they are almost all caused by the powerful being greedy and using religion as a reason for lessor people to go to war and get them cool new shiny things.
The gist of this post is that atheists don't think religion makes people bad, or at least that is not it's intent. What religion does do is hold back many people slightly from reaching their full potential as a humanist in some ways by ingraining some negative aspects in them.

When i first "became an atheist" I guess you could say I was active in the "atheist community" ( Discussing ect ) but then as time went on I started to see that being an atheist took more courage than it did intelligence. Anyone on this planet if they are honest with themselves can determine that there is no god, but some people cannot fathom the idea of a universe without god, always watching over them. People who continually bash religions as if you have to be diseased in the head and that they are superior to everyone else really bug the hell out of me almost as much as fundamentalist Christians. I am by no means agnostic, in fact I would say I am a "hardcore atheist" (hahaha) but I do not find arguing over such matters to be worth my time.

this is very well said and i share this opinion as well. the root of all evil and what makes human nature a disease is the greed which expresses itself in many different ways, just blaming religion is a mistake. the self-indulgent swines greatly outnumbers the wise/educated men (who are consequently humanists) and the current state of the world is nothing but the external representation of the internal configuration of Man (a living tomb)

it all comes down to this: "It is very difficult to conduct true experiments that would explicate a causal relationship between IQ and religious belief. Nonetheless, there is evidence from other domains that higher levels of intelligence are associated with a greater ability - or perhaps willingness - to question and overturn strongly felt institutions."

If I told you I have an invisible incorporeal dragon in my garage, you couldn't question it scientifically either, but you'd still think I'm crazy. If someone actually believed in the flying spaghetti monster, you'd think he's crazy because it's obviously a fictitious religion. Scientology was created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard after telling his peers that the real money was in religion instead of writing, yet people willingly give money to them and believe in it. Am I wrong for thinking they're crazy? Is Christianity beyond reproach because it's 2000 years old? Please, the guys that wrote the Bible were the L. Ron Hubbards of their day.
If someone believes there's a divine being that created the universe, that's fine, but believing in any specific religion is ridiculous.
All this matters because religion has been used to justify the persecution of groups (e.g., women, gays, other religions) throughout history. 15% of Americans profess to be non-religious, yet our public policy is strongly influenced by Christianity and all our politicians believe in God. The Jews have a strong lobby in the US despite barely 1% of the population, but no one cares about that 15% of the voting public because the vast majority of the non-religious are ambivalent. That's a problem.
I could actually go to your garage and check it out but i feel like that's not your point. Well, it seems like to tell if a man is crazy or not you have to compare his beliefs to what society finds acceptable.
Really, masses are stupid, but a need to believe in higher force is apparently a part of human nature. Either we were created that way by an accident or some specific God (which may or may not be already described by an existing religion) created us that way to prevent part of us from damnation.

if human nature is the act of a god who bothers with us in its almightiness then he chose the perfect damnation already and it is on earth
but i digress; we create our own filth, and we have the power to change things.

This is a science lecture with a few digs thrown in at Christians. This is probably one of the more well known DEBATES between atheists and christians, although older (but I doubt much has changed for either side).
