This thread is so fucking dumb.
If some of you honestly believe you can quickly solve a problem like jammed accelerator, whilst flying down a public road at 120mph towards an intersection, then youre idiots.
Most of us would have solved it by the time we hit 80
bye now

it doesnt have to be manual to put it in neutral while you're driving. just put the thing up to neutral and it will just rev the engine and blow it and you will slow down, or if you're already doing 120mph put the car in Reverse or Park that should kill a lot of momentum. I put some blame on the 911 operator for not instantly suggesting putting it in neutral after asking the did you try to turn it off retard question.
alot of automatics dont do anything if your going like 50 and put it in park or reverse, the check engine light just comes on and stuff, i duno if the car would keep accelerating forward tho.. they did it on mythbusters and the car didnt slow at all, but im not sure if the engine kept pushing it.. BUT in any manual, changing the gears will cancel your cruise control, and id assume it would do the same on a automatic.. but the best idea is obv to put it in neutral, this would most likely kill the cruise control and guarantee no more forward motion on the car.. on a side note i will say that i accidentally put my parents car in park, it has an electronic parking button, and its a prius, toyota just like the car in question, and the car was moving at about 6-7mph when i hit the park button, and the car violently stopped.. but im not gonna try it at 50 lol.
baals right about the brakes thing, they would probably be gently using them way 2 much and heat them up to the point of being almost useless anyway.. but i still think if they could lock the wheels up they aren't guaranteed to crash and start spinning around.. if your on a straight road and the wheels lock you dont just start spinning like crazy, the car goes straight for the most part, its like small ski's.. but if u started cranking the steering wheel around like a nutcase im sure you could get some spins outa it.
actually no, the slightest steering movement with your rear wheels locked will make the car spin, under acceleration you might be able to keep it together however, the Cruise control will accelerate the car if it feel its slowing down, so even if you apply rear brake pressure, it wont do shit to stop it.
actually cruise control is designed to disengage the moment you apply any brake pressure. I havent read the particulars of the recall though, if it's cruise control malfunctioning or the accelerator.
accelerator, "free cruise control" was more like a joke
Im not sure what to do tomorrow when I see her, should I shake her hand?? -Floofy

Brakes should be able to overpower the engine.

Pulling the ebrake in an FWD car will definitely make you spin. lol
on all the cars ive ever driven the ebrake only affects the rear wheels, this = no spin if you can get um to lock, they should both lock at the same dime, dragging the rear of the car behind the front wheels pulling it forward, there should be no energy pushing the rear end around. Now if you add the normal breaks that are much bigger in the front than the rear, your looking at a spin because the rear is accelerating faster than the front.. but if you just ebrake, no spin.... anyways in this situation if you get your wheels to lock up at around 75-80 ( i doubt its possible at that speed, might not even be possible alot slower ) but if you do, and you spin, its prolly a life saver, your speed will carry you forward and when you spin you will lose TONS of speed and prolly roll or hit other cars, but either way its better then raming into an solid stopped object like a stopped car or building or something.

news story i heard said the brakes were on fire before the crash
yes obviously since he was probably pressin the brakes all the time, brakes get red hot and get on fire under hard braking, it happens very often in rally.
