I think this is what you call "natural selection", no?
Putting the car on neutral is a no-brainer if you're driving manual, e-brake as people said ... and wtf get off the road, that guy driving clearly wasn't too smart. Wtf type of decision making skills is that. "Oh yeah let's keep going straight at the intersection". The steering isnt blocked, the accelerator was.
Again, Natural Selection. Sucks for his family, he basically killed them. |

even if its a keyless ignition, how do you turn it off when you're parking it? there has to be a way to shut it off, unless it has to be in park. |

I think its been confirmed but the phone call is not fake.
It seems it may have not been his fault, I don't know alot about cars but this is a small part in the article.
"Witnesses said the vehicle was going more than 100 mph on state Route 125 shortly before it collided with an SUV, crashed through a fence and ended up on fire in the bed of the San Diego River."
Pretty stupid to be going this fast with your family in the car regardless.

I have a push button ignition car, and I've actually been curious about this. Think I'll give it a try in a parking lot or something going 2mph, dont want to end up in a ditch. I'm gonna assume my car wont turn off though, just b/c it seems too easy for someone to accidentally do that which would lead to bad results as you lose steering and braking hydraulics pretty quick, and I dont feel like ending up in a ditch if it doesnt turn back on when I hit it again. |

at 120 a ebrake still does something, not 2 much tho, but your normal breaks + ABS will do alot and if u add in the ebrake and a divider or wall, or the car infront of u, your gonna stop. plus if your driving 75 and teh car starts getting outa control , stopping should be first instinct.. anyway thats aside the issue.. i think this is the problem with the toyota car pedal getting stuck down, thats why they are doing a massive recall on almost all toyota models.. but nolan fyi its not the same on any lexus or scion models so no recall |
if you pull an ebrake going 120 wont you lose control of the car pretty quickly?
|
no at 120 a normal ebrake wont do much at all, actually some cars have it set to not engage at all if at high speeds, but most cars it will help slow it down but not just lock the back wheels and start a skid or anything like that.
One other thing, in my moms toyota prius if you hit the parking break, it will just lock it, moving or not, ive done it on accident and i was very suprised it didnt break the car, so thats an option, its just the parking break button.

this is actually a good idea. i'm pretty sure this does work.
|
and about that, ive driven my moms prius all around without the keys anywhere around, i think ive gone 20 miles before and it didnt shut off. |
There is no way you can slow down a car accelerating with the hand brake, the rear brakes do less than 20% of the breaking and not even the 4 fully working breaks can overpower an accelerting engine.
So basically, pull the hand brake not very hard, the car wont slow down at all, pull it very hard you will lock the wheels spinning out of control. |
baal me and u r prolly the 2 of the biggest car nerds on here and weve both seen people lock wheels under braking, they dont just start spinning crazy the second u pull it.. and at high speeds on most car it is only going to add to helping you stop, it should not be able to lock the wheels, basically if i couldnt turn the car off or put it in neutral or unjam the pedal, i would get really close to a cement wall or divider of there is one, rip ebrake, slam normal brakes and if there was a wall, try and loose some speed by rubbing on it, but that may be the most dangerous part, ive seen people just tap walls on the freeway and just start flying off the wall after they hit it.. but in any case, if you do start spinning, your car should come to a stop after the airbags deploy there is a safety thing that shuts shit down, or if you spin you will just start burning out and at least ur not doing 120+ anymore... i duno its a pretty crazy situation to get in anyway.. i submitted the whole story to myth busters so hopefully they will do it on the show lol |
the hand brake wont slow down the car, the car is on cruise control and it will accelerate to maintain the speed, plus the brakes were probably blazing hot loosing most of its effectiveness, if you pull it too hard locking your wheels he will for sure crash.
And obviously running to the interception is the worst choice but these were old dumb people i mean, they called 9/11 and prayed... you cant get more stupid than that, the best option would be to pull the fuses in the fuse box |

it doesnt have to be manual to put it in neutral while you're driving. just put the thing up to neutral and it will just rev the engine and blow it and you will slow down, or if you're already doing 120mph put the car in Reverse or Park that should kill a lot of momentum. I put some blame on the 911 operator for not instantly suggesting putting it in neutral after asking the did you try to turn it off retard question. |

alot of automatics dont do anything if your going like 50 and put it in park or reverse, the check engine light just comes on and stuff, i duno if the car would keep accelerating forward tho.. they did it on mythbusters and the car didnt slow at all, but im not sure if the engine kept pushing it.. BUT in any manual, changing the gears will cancel your cruise control, and id assume it would do the same on a automatic.. but the best idea is obv to put it in neutral, this would most likely kill the cruise control and guarantee no more forward motion on the car.. on a side note i will say that i accidentally put my parents car in park, it has an electronic parking button, and its a prius, toyota just like the car in question, and the car was moving at about 6-7mph when i hit the park button, and the car violently stopped.. but im not gonna try it at 50 lol.
baals right about the brakes thing, they would probably be gently using them way 2 much and heat them up to the point of being almost useless anyway.. but i still think if they could lock the wheels up they aren't guaranteed to crash and start spinning around.. if your on a straight road and the wheels lock you dont just start spinning like crazy, the car goes straight for the most part, its like small ski's.. but if u started cranking the steering wheel around like a nutcase im sure you could get some spins outa it. |

Probably the tranny has protection so you cant shift to neutral or a lower gear so you dont blow up the engine/tranny. |

actually no, the slightest steering movement with your rear wheels locked will make the car spin, under acceleration you might be able to keep it together however, the Cruise control will accelerate the car if it feel its slowing down, so even if you apply rear brake pressure, it wont do shit to stop it. |

actually cruise control is designed to disengage the moment you apply any brake pressure. I havent read the particulars of the recall though, if it's cruise control malfunctioning or the accelerator. |

almost 100% of toyota sedans r FWD.. if you did get the rear brakes or ebrake to lock the back wheels your going to spin, the front wheels r doing the pulling, pulling the car forward constantly, the car should not enter into a uncontrollable spin, its constantly moving the front forward and keeping the back in the back.. you would have to get the front to really slow down to spin the back around. |

This thread is so fucking dumb.
If some of you honestly believe you can quickly solve a problem like jammed accelerator, whilst flying down a public road at 120mph towards an intersection, then youre idiots. |
