Please Help:
I was playing a session and in the middle of the session internet stoped working. Its almost two days now! And no progress. I have called the ISP and they just told me some stupid shits. I have restarted and unpluged the modem and computer like 439843684545 times so far!

Symptoms:
0)NOTHING WORKS. I cant open ANY webpage. I cant even connect to MSN or Yahoo Messenger.

00) I have tried it with three computer(two with vista and one with XP) and an iPhone and the all have the same problem. But when I steal the neighbors internet with the same laptops they work fine.

1) In Vista I get the "earth" icon next to the two computers in the tool bar in windows which basically means Windows is connected to internet.

2)PokerStars FINDS the site. The startup/update windows come and goes like normal but in the lobby I get the disconnect msg. I cant login nor I can't even see the name of tables.

3)PokerStars connection/trace window shows everything is normal. I have %100 connectivity to all the sites (Yahoo/PokerStars/MIT/....)
When I also click the "trace" button it seems everything is normal! But like I said I cant even press log-on.

4) Just for trying some stuff I started some random with Torrent and it actually works! The speed is at 20KB/s instead of the normal 500KB/s though. But I left the computer on for over 20 hours and I have downloaded around 400MB of some movie via Torrent!

This is really weired. Even if internet is just slow Im sure w 20KB/s I have to be able to load ANY website/Playpoker/and connect to MSN and stuff.

5)When I goto info for the connection it says I AM connected to the internet.

System:
Windows Vista
ADSL Telus Internet in Vancouver/BC/Downtown/Canada
The computer is directly connected to the modem via cable connection.
The modem and computer has been working fine for over 2 years now.
There is no smoke/smell/fire coming out of the anywhere.

How can it be virus? I turn that computer off and connect a different computer to the modem with cable and I have the same exact problem!

I also tried a 3rd computer via wireless router into the modem and same exact problem again.

Also my when I use an iPhone to connect to internet via wireless I have the same problem of not being able to open anything.

Unless the Virus is in the modem!!! I have no idea how this can be a virus problem.

it's not a virus if all your stuff doesn't work, so it's probably the router getting fucked up by something or broke inside. Get a new router/modem and should be fine

I'm not sure, but try manually set some public dns server (your usual dns may be down), but I may be totally off :-)

wait a second, how can you have a wireless network if the modem is directly connected to your pc?

I used to do this for a living im pretty sure I can figure it out, just keep replying

is ur modem setup as a PPPoE connection? Try making it work in bridge only mode and run the PPPoE from whatever is routing your connection.

if you are just seriously running your modem directly to all of your pcs try reseting (there should be a small button you can push with a toothpick or pen or something) your modem but make sure you know your username/password for your PPP stuff.

also try flushing your DNS before doing any of that

to do that in vista click the start button then in the search thing at the bottom type in "cmd" and hit enter.

in the dos screen type ipconfig /flushdns

looks like a faulty line. packets being dropped at an incredibly high rate cos u have an incredibly unreliable line and so only services which send packets unordered and which can tolerate packet loss.

hard to say without more info, but the 100% connectivity in PS goes against this.

OR------

some of ur ports could just not be functioning. try to do a port scan. if the lower numbers fail then thats it.

really your isp, fucking hell they should fix this.

Well #1 Try a direct connection which I'm sure you already did (aka get rid of the router and just plug your modem directly into your PC. If that doesn't work you can fiddle around with all the stuff someone suggested or just get them to send a tech because there is a good chance the modem is fried. Any storms in your area recently?

I do have also have a router but im not using it at the moment to keep things simple.

@CrownRoyal
I just did press the small button on the modem w a pencil and nothing happens.
I also did the flushdns thing in cmd.
Zero success so far.

@Genjix
In PS it actually say that no package gets lost!
How can I scan the ports?

@Yanchi
How can I setup this DNS thing?

This sounds like a very classic case of virus infection, likely redirecting your URL requests for whatever reason. Have you run a quality virus scanner on your pc yet? Go grab yourself a copy of kaspersky right now. In fact, do it from someone elses pc and throw the shit on a thumb drive to transfer to your machine. Often these infections which hijack your internet have rogue sites set up to look like legitimate anti-virus sights, further infecting you as you think you are surfing symantec.com and are really on a cloned site.

bye now

But how come all three computers have the same exact problem?

I have also checked and the internet transfer rate(KBin/out) is around 1/20th of what it is normally.

Just point out again that the problem is not only to one computer.

you dont have a virus they are retarded.

hold in the reset button on ur modem until shit starts flashing. But plz before you do it make sure you know your PPP stuff for the username/password and not the one to log into ur modem's specs i'm talking about the one that grants you access to the internet from within ur modem.

also, do you have a router??? If so i wanna make ur modem work in bridge only and setup the PPPoE from the router

Try calling the ISP again, it sounds like they are fucking with the lines or something. I cant imagine a virus being this selective it allows connections on wireless but shuts down dsl.

Stat.Quo   Somalia. Jun 30 2009 12:29. Posts 1230

I had a weird problem like this about 2 years back. There was a problem with the actual phone line, and the tech came and had to go into the phone room in my building, and then deal with it. Afterwards it started to work again. Just call a tech imo.

NewbSaibot   United States. Jun 30 2009 12:40. Posts 4952

oh I didnt notice you had mulitple pc's behind a router that also cant connect. If you dont know enough about how to configure PPP on a dsl line or how to adjust any other settings you need to just tell your ISP that your shit is down and they had better fucking fix it or else youll just cancel and switch.

bye now

capaneo   Canada. Jun 30 2009 14:20. Posts 8465

I called them again and now they are sending me a new DSL modem!
I REALLY doubt this will fix anything but its free they told me.
Now Im left a week without internet!

I really doubt that the cause of the problem is in the house anyway.

Capaneo, you can try some of these -> http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-public-dns-server-list/
Bottom of the page also contains links where you can find exactly how to change DNS servers. But as I read this thread, I doubt it'll work.. But at least give it a shot

@capaneo
go to services
see if your wmi has been started
also check if your internet gateway is "connected"

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

also, just reinstall windows. usually it is the easiest fix
