buying used is stupid and -ev. lets say you get a 2003 chevy cavalier, for 6k. It's not already 5 years old, you can expect to spend money on a transmission and engine within 5 years which are about another 5k, plus new tires, oil changes, tune ups, etc. Used cars are something that you don't know the history of, and you must realize that there is a reason they are getting rid of it.

sigh...its like they are throwing money out of a helicopter and i dont have any hands...so i just break even.

I think this guy came right out of the GM executive board, so you want me to buy a new Tahoe or Hummer instead of a good quality used vehicle that I can look up it's carfax and know the cars entire history?

it seems after buying a used car, within two years i have already spent the same amount of what i spent on the car itself. i spent 5k on a chevy suburban about 10 years ago and i had to replace the transmission and AC within the first year. within 3 years, it was leaking oil, and i was about to drop another 2 grand to replace it, but it was stolen.
I've never had a good experience with used vehicles, and i will never buy a vehicle thats not new.
All you're doing is buying a ticking money bomb. NOM NOM NOM NOM there goes your monies. while a nice easy $200/mo for 5 years is not bad at all.
*edit* for something that you know will not break down/more reliable then something used. + a warranty if anything does happen.

a 15 grand saloon perhaps, but up the ante and youll get an under 6 seconds beast.
Now granted i dont know what they changed in the new focus but the old one is one of the best American cars ever made.

Ya and chances are they've beaten on it like hell. Well OP depends on whether you want to buy new or used. If you buy new, the field is limited so the choice is a lot simpler. For new ~$20k (a tad more) cars with a bit of oomph the most popular ones are VW GTI, Subbie WRX, Honda Civic Si (my car ^_^, smaller, less luxurious brother to the TSX in a way), Mazdaspeed 3, Cobalt SS. They're all considered "sporty" economy cars. If you buy used, well the possibilities are endless.

And ya, the to whoever was discussing it above, the Ford Focus is slow. The Focus ST is not that slow.

You should get a GT-R :D

I have an evo 8 and i love it. it's fast and fun to drive but not especially great for extended periods of time due to road noise and the stiffness of the ride (very bumpy). i got an 03 with 3k miles on it for like 20k. If you want something standard/easy to drive/easy on the eyes just go with a TSX or some other acura they're pretty nice. mazda 6 is also a good suggestion, poor man's bmw.

buy an used mercedes or bmw, maybe even an audi. best sedans ever made.

RICHI8   United States. Nov 26 2008 13:35. Posts 1341

I'm a huge car guy and I've read some wild things in here.

Definitely do not buy a domestic car. The repair on those things are crap, not to mention I can't think of a single domestic sedan that fits into the criteria you would like.

The TSX and TL are great buys right now for their price point and the engine inside is a Honda, so you know the maintenance will be cheap and the reliability will be excellent. What kind of power are you looking for? Both of those cars are FWD so they feel sluggish. The TSX is also a high revving 2.4L so it's not really making impressive power until like 6k RPM.

Mercedes sedans are decent. Upkeep on them is expensive and reliability becomes an issue once you get into the higher mileage.

Audi definitely not. It's a volkswagon and I can't count how many of those I see broken down every day.

Nissan Maxima/Altima are pretty popular now. But the transmissions on those are crap as is the motor.

I would recommend a BMW 3-series. Something like a 328i or 330i. They are RWD which feels much better than FWD. They are also a more torquey motor than the TSX and TL and have about the same horse power. But the torque and RWD makes a huge difference. It's a BMW so the exterior styling is timeless and will never feel dated, and the interiors are great and loaded with all kinds of pointless options just for the hell of it. Reliability is great on BMWs and maintenance isn't as expensive as everyone makes it out to be. You just don't take the car to a direct BMW dealership, take it to a European auto specialist or learn how to do somethings yourself. Most maintenance is pretty basic.

So e46 BMW 3-series gets my vote. You might even be able to get a 5-series for a little extra cash.

Thoughts on AWD and how it feels to drive? Is AWD mostly ment for snow and off roading? What about SUVs?

AWD isn't really necessary unless you're in heavy snow conditions I guess. But even then, that's a little overboard. AWD is more for track cars as it improves handling quite a bit. The coolness factor of AWD doesn't make up for the terrible gas mileage AWD cars get, unless you're really going to use the AWD.
