Things in my life have made a turn for the better. For the past 4 weeks I have been working in a factory for $9 an hour. I had no choice in the matter its the best I could do etc. I really haven't suffered as much as i thought I would and working for $9 an hour when you have nothing isn't that terribly bad. I had money to make ALL of my payments and take out a different girl every friday and saturday night and have probably the most fun ive had in a long time over the past 4 weeks. Tomorrow, however, I have an interview that im a shoe-in for doing much more sophisticated work. I'm gonna be setting up networks and stuff for random businesses making at least 1k a week up to 5k+ a week just depending on what it is im doing. Needless to say this is a pretty sick opportunity for a 19 year old with no college degrees or anything like that. The downside is that im a rural farm boy (well not really but i live in a farm community) and im moving to the capital of the world new york city. Pretty big change! I lived and worked in downtown Milwaukee for 3-4 months though so its not like i have no idea what im getting myself into.
I guess all of those years of being a computer nerd are gonna pay off because I'm potentially going to be balling way too hard and might actually have to save some money (whoa?) I've never done that before. I dunno where this job will lead me but it pretty much opens the doors to whatever I will want to do for the rest of my life and my opportunities are endless so I love my situation right now.
On to things you guys love to hear me write about, my degen poker career.
I OFFICIALLY started my journey from $0 to 100k yesterday. I sat down with 1k playchips, played for about an hour and had 18k playchips when i was finished. I played for about 2 hours today and i now have 200k playchips.
I'm not totally sure @ what point i will sell my playchips but probably when i start to become overrolled for the biggest playchip sng games so probably around 4-5 mil which will put me comfortably at $40-50 which is massively sufficient to start playing nl2.
Playing poker when its not about the money is so much easier its ridiculous, lets hope i can stay away from my bad habits which unfortunately are my downfall to not only poker but life. Stay out of the games I can't afford that's all i gotta do and this quest to 100k will be a ridiculously easy task.
gl all, and for the fucking love of god I hate my image on this site, I'm half way tempted to make a new username when I get to new york and you guys will never see me again. Quit fucking berating me and calling me a thief and other shit I never try to do anything but help people and get massively negative comments about everything I do and its insanely annoying.

GL pal, but if you're moving to NY 1k a week isn't gonna be THAT huge. I mean it's still good, but it won't go close to as far as it does in your hometown. Where are you going to live? |

I hope you don't take what I'm gonna say negatively because I'm not meaning to put you down and it really is sincere...
I hate saying this because I end up sounding like my parents, but I'm a lot older than you are, I've made many mistakes in my youth and I've seen many different situations.
And I truly believe that the one thing that is holding you back is this mentality that you're entitled to something. Like for example, you haven't even gone to this interview yet and you say that you are a shoe-in. Or whenever someone takes down a big tourney, you go "I'm so due". Or how you talk about how you crush so and so stakes. Look, self confidence is a good thing, but there is a point where it actually is detrimental.
People think that successful people are that way because they think big and aim high. That is true but more importantly, they do things one step at a time. While they may have the bigger picture in mind, they focus on the immediate task at hand. Your mindset is evident in the way you approach poker. You have this 0 - 100K goal. Thing is, you need to take that one step at a time, while you may have in mind a goal that you want to hit 100K, that isn't what you should be thinking about day in and day out. You should focus first on 100$ and take it step by step.
I've seen many people with really big ambitions always talk about making it big in life and always going for the home run. I was like that myself for quite some time. I've realized that the common thread in successful people is that they are more practical about their goals. They plan long term but focus on getting closer step by step rather than trying to get it all in one shot and that way, they set themselves up for success rather than failure. And success breeds success.
Interestingly, I've known quite a few people who share your mindset, with me 7 years ago being one of them. And every single one also does the same thing that you do constantly, which is talk about your successes before they happen. Like you haven't even gotten this job yet and you're already planning your move to NY and how you're gonna be ballin and saving, etc. This is consistent with the whole not going step by step thing that I've talked about. You can't imagine how many times I've heard people say oh, I'm gonna be a baller cuz I just became a stock broker or a day trader or joined a forex trading desk, etc. And I'm gonna buy this and that and I'm gonna be a baller! The guys that talk about how baller they are gonna be NEVER became ballers. The true ballers were focused on actually getting things done and getting ahead while the fools were in their own little world daydreaming about how baller they gonna be.
I wish you the best of luck on this and I hope everything works out. I'm just speaking from experience that there are a lot of opportunities that seem really good but are in actuality just a dead end job that pays well only for a select few while the rest make peanuts. Despite everything that I've said, I do think that you're a smart guy and if you take a better more practical approach to life, I think you can be successful. And NY is a really tough place for a farm boy. If things do pan out and you decide to move here, I'll help you out as much as I can. |

you're spot on about my ambitions being too big but I also don't post all of the smaller details. I don't think I'm a shoe-in for the job It's just what i was actually told and basically the interview is just finalizing it all. Unless i somehow completely fuck up everything at my interview today I have the job from everything that I know. I'm basically the perfect canidate for what they want, excellent computer skills, young and I'm not leaving anything at home to distract me from work or anything like that.
As for poker the 100k thing is just something to drive me because it's something that i want really, really badly. I've played enough poker and believe (maybe incorrectly because im delusional about my goals and stuff like you said) that I have the skillset waiting to do it and whatever else, It's the perfect thing to aim for because it will basically just require me to go up 1 limit a month to attain and that's all i want is to start progressing through poker and not as you put it"going for the homerun" which is ALWAYS what i do and I go busto.
You really summed me up well in your post it's almost scary. |

I just reread my post and it kinda sounded condescending. Thing is that is totally not what I meant by it.
More than anything, I was talking about my maturation process and the changes that I've made in how I approach life and how that has helped me succeed in life.
I too had this sense of entitlement. I thought I was the smartest guy and that everything would come easy. I had the best grades and I went to the top school, etc. Of course then I started smoking weed in 9th grade and by 11th grade, I was snorting massive amounts of coke everyday. I threw away an incredible opportunity because of drugs. I thought I was too good to do entry level jobs and I sat there thinking about how I'd hit a homerun and become the baller that I thought I was entitled to be. .
That mindset will get you nowhere in life and I learned that the hard way. No one gives a fuck about you, in fact the whole world is full of people trying to gain at your expense. Anyway, my advice to you would be to throw that mindset out the window. Rather than being so sure that you are the perfect candidate, spend more time and effort practicing for your interview. Read interview guides out there and go through mock questions. Do all that you can do to improve your chances. That's the type of thing that a successful person does, while the loser sits on his ass thinking that the interview is gonna be a shoe-in. |
