If I were about to make my first big mark in tournament poker I'd be showing my personality very strongly. The players with the big personalities (esfandiari, laak, negreanu, hellmuth, nguyen) are the ones who get interviews/tv time and, in turn, the big sponsorships.
Hevad Khan brand basketballs by 2008 baby. |
Their is a fine line between being charismatic and likeable and looking like a dick showing off. The people you have listed with the exception of Hellmuth are not over the top annoying in most peoples opinions. Laak goes a little crazy sometimes but is for the most part intelligent and subdued. I think the players like Negreanu and Esfandiari are in one category. They get TV shows, game deals etc. I think along with those players you can add people like Raymer and Hachem who get sponsored by PS. Not exactly great entertainers but humble and characters that people go "he's a down to earth guy" about. At the opposite end you have Tony G and Humberto Brenes. A lot of people hate these two players and I think they suffer in sponsors etc because of it. They get a lot of TV time but no one wants to sponsor them to the extent of other name players. Then there is Hellmuth and Matasow in their own category who are annoying but everyone loves them because they are losers trying to make it and showing lots of emotion.
Ive got nothing against rain and I hope he makes the FT. But some of the accounts getting written could mean he is demonised on TV. This could cost him in terms of deals afterwards. Its hard to judge with only written accounts so I hope its not as bad as some of the stuff sounds.
Good luck to him all the same. With 8 mil who cares about sponsors anyway!

Hellmuth has 11 bracelets, more then any other player? |

It might even be possible that Khan himself would have more to gain in the long run by letting one of the two superstars take first place if he got heads-up with them |
lol gotta be a pretty long run to make up for 3.4 mil

trouble is that winning the tourney IS largely a matter of luck. you only need to run to one bad beat or cooler and youre out. if they changed poker tournament structure to reveal skill more.... but yeah, thats not hapening |
Multiple pros have said its the tourney with the best structure this year tho |

So I'm starting to have this sick feeling that Khan's going to win it all
Even though it's supposed to be a longshot still, I had this same feeling when Daut got into the top 30 at CPA and when Rekrul got into the top 16 at the HU event
I just know it's coming
there's no way Khan isn't the favorite right now, if your bookie gives better than 10 to 1 on him taking first you should take that bet |
I'll give you 9:1 against Khan winning. I'll put down $100.00 of Stars money. Care to back up your words? We can use one of the LP.net regulars as arbitrator and give him the cash to hold. |

Would you guys say Khan is a 3-to-2 favorite over Scott Freeman? I'm speculating in making a bet. |

I guess you are taking issue with me calling him a loser? I was referring more to his personality etc not his actual winnings or black belt in poker. |

Over at the TV table (more coming on that in an upcoming post), RaiNKhaN is Mr. Personality. Once again, he's hopped up on Red Bull and poker energy. At one point, his drink found the floor. Not a second passed before he yelled, "Janitor to the feature table! And cocktails! Red Bull"
His tablemates smiled.
"That's part of my plan," he said. "I don't want to just drink the Red Bull. I want the smell all around me."
